Australia at the Junior World Championships

Brumby Jack June 3, 2012 23

No GravatarWith the International Test break upon us, it’s easy to forget that Australia has sent a squad of 28 Under 20 players to contest the Junior World Championships being held in and around Cape Town in South Africa.

Australia have been drawn as the top seed in pool C along side Scotland, France and Argentina and will be looking to improve on their 3rd placing at the 2011 tournament.

In the other pools, pool A sees winners of the last four tournaments New Zealand take on Fiji, Samoa and Wales, whilst pool B has South Africa as the only Southern Hemisphere representative in the pool with England, Ireland and Italy making up the numbers.

The Aussies will be led by Queensland Reds flanker Liam Gill, who has Wallabies coach Robbie Deans’s blessing to gain valuable experience in this tournament, with the squad having a mix of players who have tasted high level rugby in either Super or Sevens formats, and those yet to play at the elite levels.

How poetic to play Scotland on Monday night!

  • Cantab

How many super rugby player are in the squad?

    • RugbyNoddy

4 with Super Rugby experience I think – Gill, Frisby, Goodwin and Sautia.

  • werewolf

Godspeed to em. I’ll try and watch their matches when and where I can.

  • Knackers

Great news – Gill will be a future captain of the wallabies! Good decision to let him lead this team instead of throwing him into the test mix where we have plenty of talent in his position

  • Joe Mac

This team is too young. Good luck to the lads but unfortunately I don’t think this will be our year…

    • wilful

      >This team is too young.

I know! So many players under 20!

  • younggun

Feeling all cool cause I played under 9s with jock merriman

  • Tahs #4

Bet the Tahs have signed the three worst playaz in the entire squad

    • Black Guy

More like the Tahs get their choice of the best players in the squad with the result being these players will never play representative football again.

  • Baldwid

Why is Frisby at 15?? I know he is good but common Nuci!!

    • Brumby Jack

      He’s the ultimate. That’s why.

  • Alan

The first 40 was about as near rugby perfection as you can get!!

the junior Wallabies were immensely impressive! The tight 5 were outstanding (especially the locks) and the backs were on fire. Chris F looks the absolute business, serious power and strength there, might not be long till he gets promoted to the big team

Some of the ball skills were outrageous, the backing up of runners and the physicality at the breakdown was just fantastic. Would have easily cracked 70points if the goal kicker hadnt been poor but wow what a start!

Sautia will be in the wallabies within 2 years or in league i’d guess.

Let’s hope it’s indicative of tonight’s game. As you say, the first 40 was so slick. The forwards aggressive and effective and the backs quick and accurate. Amazing balance in the team. I think what impressed me most and – you mentioned it – was the backing up of the runners. There was always someone there to take the offload or help with the clean out. I couldn’t help thinking some of the big boys could take a few lessons!! My only gripe was they took the foot off the pedal in the 2nd half a little but I think it was more due to fatigue than anything else.

      Impressive stuff.

Forgot to add that the Scots were unfortunately rather awful. A good hit out that bodes well but hardly a reliable indicator of where the Aussies really stand.

  • BloodRed

Agree with Allan. Terrific skills shown across the field and how good was it to see an Australian team smashing the opposition scrum? Looked like any number of guys in that team could step up to super rugby. That’s where the franchises should be looking to fill their rosters, not poaching from each other. Nice to see a few in the squad who come from outside QLD and NSW.

  • Bigbang

well done to the boys..great win and great style

  • Patrick

It was a good win and the first half in particular was very impressive, but:
    a) this was Scotland
    b) despite a, when they did get the ball they managed to make decent metres with it on a few occasions including a couple of embarrasingly missed tackles
    c) since we didn’t have to work it up through successive rucks and mauls in tight, we still don’t really know how we will go against much bigger and stronger English, South African and kiwi teams (not forgetting France and Wales).

But that said they did look the goods against their opposition on the day!

Also, credit to the Scottish 10 (I think) who nearly murdered one of the Aussies with what I think was an accidental spear tackle but actually made a massive effort to get the guy’s feet down first. That could have been incredibly ugly!

  • John

What a great game to watch!!
Very pleased I decided to stay up and watch running rugby at its best.
very impressed with the Aussie backline in particular number 13 Chris F’Sautia, number 14 James Dargaville and Number 11 Allan Faalavaau.
In the Engine Room Number 2 Hugh Roach looked strong, as did number 4 Jed Holloway, and a good captains knock from Liam Gill at 7.
Hope Foxsports decide to show all pool games.

  • mac bazzy

Front row looked magnificent, Hugh Roach looks a right Mongo – will he be big enough or another Adam Frier?

Holloway might find himself in the backrow in years to come. Tight 5 was a real strength, as the case in the last 5 Oz U20′s teams.

    Back three also awesome.

Obviously the two best are CFS and Gill. CFS will be reds 13 next year, although could be a Horan-esque 12.

    • Swat

Agree on the skill of CFS but if anyone is close to Horan it is JOC. CFS is more like young Mortlock + a great step; future wallaby there.

  • pedro

Anyone know if there’s any highlights being posted from this tournament? Seems to be a lot of tries being scored, something that is cathartic to watch, especially if they’re wearing the right colours.
