The Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens team has reclaimed its position at the top of the IRB Women’s World Series standings after defeating New Zealand 24-12 in a pulsating Cup Final in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was reward for a weekend where the Aussies dominated each and every opponent – save for a few nervous moments against the World Champion Kiwi outfit – to secure a richly deserved 20 Series points. Victorious skipper Sharni Williams said: “I’m ecstatic. We played well all tournament and to beat New Zealand in a tough physical game was a very satisfying. Our coach did a…

Yesterday we had the shock news that Wallabies Captain Ben Mowen has retired from international rugby. Today G&GR exclusively brings you the letter emailed to the full Wallaby squad on behalf of Ben Mowen early yesterday morning explaining his decision. The story is consistent – this is a tremendously difficult decision for a man who’s worked towards this goal his whole professional life. The problem is that he’s now 29 with a young family and spending seven months a year traveling is something he personally cannot balance. I can personally understand that; I’ve found that travelling for just a few…

What a year that was. With the extended Super season, the Lions tour, The Rugby Championship and a Grand Slam tour it felt like two, if not three seasons rolled into one. It was mostly a year of pain for Aussie rugby, with a fair few ‘nearlies’ and some light on the horizon thrown in. The pain was obvious; at the end of this season our trophy cabinet is about as bare as it can get of major trophies. The biggest loss was no doubt the once-every-twelve-years Lions series defeat. Having suffered that we just managed to avoid the wooden…

You may have noticed that the site of late has been sponsored by Rhino. A perk of this arrangement was that yours truly was invited to the launch of Rhino Australia at the SFS (Allianz stadium) last week. As well as rugby heavy hitters like myself (!) other attendees included Wallaby coach Andrew Blades, Jim Williams and Garry Ella – not to mention Moose Skeggs who even behaved himself. What we saw was an interesting break down clinic hosted by kiwi skills coach Rob Taylor, who put Knox Grammar’s finest through their paces. The interesting bit was that Rhino have…
