A strong finish for Uni resulted in a 38-31 come-from-behind win against Sunnybank in what was a thrilling encounter at the Heavies’ home ground. Wests v University of Queensland The University of Queensland have outlined their 2014 Qld Premier rugby credentials by overwhelming Wests 57-20. Wests opened the scoring with a penalty to scrum-half Tim Smith but UQ caught them off-guard twice, taking quick taps resulting in prop Pat Fepuleai and fullback Tom Pincus crossing the line. A resurgent AIC 1 scored 19 unanswered points in the second half  after GPS 1 dominated the first to pull back a historic draw in the annual Queensland schoolboys grudge match. Wet conditions limited  a possible GPS whitewash in the first half, forcing numerous handling errors and expansive back-line play was substituted for an opportunistic kick and chase style for scoring in the second half in front of a large crowd at Ballymore. Other than the loss of the much hyped AIC 1 team to GPS 2, the first day of the Queensland schoolboy trials went much the way that was expected. GPS 1 showed they are still the benchmark in Queensland schoolboy rugby, AIC 1 lost two crucial players early on in their loss to GPS 2, the CSS teams showed they have the grit and determination to punch well above their weight but weren’t able to scratch up a win and AIC 2 defeated GPS 3 in an evenly matched game. The undefeated Iona have overcome the first of two serious challenges for an outright premiership downing St. Edmund’s 28 – 17. A physically dominating performance led by Australian schoolboy and captain Brad Wilkin and powerhouse frontrower Carter Ozanne saw Iona muscle Eddies out of the game until it was too late.
