Moses spends far too long on G&GR, dealing with the totality of the strength and conditioning, the medical, the rugby side of things, strategy, the review, preview of the internet itself and also the individuals. A Waratahs apologist and rib-eye steak enthusiast, he is often found working behind the scenes keeping the G&GR juggernaut afloat.

An excerpt from Guardians of the Game, The History of The New South Wales Rugby Union 1874-2004, John G Mulford 2005: NSW WARATAHS v SOUTH AFRICA Sydney Cricket Ground 19 June 1937 Some great Springboks came to tour Australia in 1937, the first South African Rugby team to tour since 1921. Captained by the giant Phil Nel, the side contained legendary halfback Danie Craven, the pioneer of the dive pass. They won every match on tour until they struck the NSW Waratahs. The deeds of NSW that day will live forever as one of the greatest feats ever seen on…

These two pics were whipped together late last year by G&GR’s resident cartoonist Muppet. In an effort to reduce the post-traumatic stress of the 2011 rugby season. It gives us a chance to take a trip down memory lane and remember the halcyon days when Australian rugby topped the world. That’s right, Super Rugby 2011. I tried to take as much inspiration from the forum comments, and, given that it wasn’t the best time to organise a drink session, I relied on my [ahem] sense of humour for the remaining ‘gags’. Today Clyde Rathbone released a courageous article regaling his personal battles with depression, and has requested his story be shared. Below it is reproduced in full: “Sometimes we have to take risks, be terrified and do it anyway”. Julian Smith wrote this, so I decided to contact him, below is what I wrote. Just like I’ve asked Julian, I’m asking you all to send this to somebody you know if you think it might help them. I’m not really sure where to start, if this appears as unlettered and rambling as I fear please accept my apologies… I first heard…

I’ve put together a short survey to gain a better understanding of G&GR’s readers. I’m planning to ask the same questions at the end of each year to gain insight into how the public opinion of rugby fans changes over time. The survey is open from tonight until the end of November. Please suggest any changes to the format for next year’s survey in the comments below. If you’re interested in completing the survey, click here to begin. Note: All questions are optional, and there is no personally identifiable data collected.

The man they call Bam-Man has finished writing and shipped his book to the printers. Openside promises us ‘an insight into David as a professional athlete and as an individual’. Whether that will enable us mere mortals to get guns like his, we don’t know, but to be sure you can pre-order a copy (here’s the link) signed by the man himself. All profits from its sale support David’s latest social enterprise Heroes Boots, a footwear and clothing manufacturer that focusses on the fair and ethical treatment of the people manufacturing the products. It also works to alleviate the effects…

A welcome return of Sunday afternoon rugby to Sydney saw the visiting Samoan side take on the Wallabies at Olympic Park. An early penalty to Samoa for Sekope Kepu being offside at a kick allowed Tusi Pisi take first points from halfway, 3-0 to Samoa. The Wallabies won a series of penalties on Samoa’s 22, each time opting for a lineout and allowing Samoa’s well structrured defence to shine by keeping ot the home side. After 10 minutes of pressure, the Samoans turned the ball over on their 22, and shifted it wide to Alesana Tuilagi who motored down the…

A new contributor to our forums, François, put together this great video package showcasing JOC’s 2011. Here’s the intro to the video as written by François in the G&GR Forums: I had a bit of free time recently and decided to make a summary of JOC’s season, whom I’m a big fan of. Beware, it’s not just linebreaks and tries, as I also included some halfbreaks, and some of the bits and pieces he tried but didn’t necessarily worked out perfect.. It makes for an more honest rendition (at least I hope so^^), and goes to show that although he…

A high stakes match on an ordinary night in Sydney saw the seventh-placed Waratahs versus the eighth-placed Highlanders. In a competition where the top six make the finals and with two weeks left to play, the stakes don’t get much higher in the regular season. The first half started with the Tahs dominating territory thanks to a series of very poor clearing kicks from the Highlanders. After a period of sustained pressure Phil Waugh was in under the posts, but was called back for a forward pass. At the nine minute mark a trademark spout of Kurtley Beale magic had…

Following a turbulent week off the field for the Waratahs, tonight’s game looms as an opportunity to show their fans they are listening and put on a great night of entertainment. Tah Man’s entry did not disappoint – riding in on a horse to the tune from “The man from snowy river”. The Tahs received the kickoff and won a penalty at the first ruck. Kurtley set up a lineout in the Lions half from which TPN found the mark and Chris Alcock broke the advantage line with a strong midfield run. Quick ball out to the wing saw Lachie…
