To give a bit of context behind the plan to lose the pool games, the way the Hottest 7s tournament runs, the lowest qualifiers from each pool play for the Gecko Cup. The main goal for the team is to be the best of the worst, so taking out the Gecko Cup does that. There is two ways to get to the cup final, the second lowest qualifiers play quarter finals, and the lowest skip straight to the semis, so the quickest way to the final is to lose the pools. True to the Mudchook traditions, they boys took to…

As I sat at the airport waiting to board, I got to thinking the closest thing, short of an epic World Cup tour last year, I haven’t had a proper trip with a rugby team for about a decade. I have been given the official rules, unfortunately rule 9, What goes on tour stays on tour I am unable to…

As first hit outs at a tournament like the Rugby World Cup go, it was a good one. A tough match that the boys had to work hard for, but they got the win and a bonus point to boot. Some inclement weather at the start of the game saw things tight and more grind than glitz and we went into oranges at 6 a piece. The sun came out for the beginning of the second half and the Wallabies to the opportunity to run in four quick tries. And that was that for the scoring. Some pleasing things to…

Continuing on with the clean stadiums rule, Westpac Stadium in Wellington gets all dressed up as Wellington Regional Stadium as it hosts matches of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Wellington Regional Stadium. Doesn’t that just roll off your tongue, sounding inclusive and benign? Oh Lord, kumbaya. It actually lulls you into a false sense of security. The reality is just so different. Wellington is an awful place to play rugby. Somewhere between Invercargill and….Invercargill. Cold, driving rain guarantees hypothermia, at the very least. The only good news is that it’s better than it used to be. Yeah, really? This is…

We are starting our virtual tour in Christchurch, where the clean stadiums rule, finally caught onto by the Kiwis, sees AMI Stadium renamed as Stadium Christchurch. Stadium Christchurch will host 5 Pool matches, including…

The latest harebrained scheme from over the ditch is the BackingBlack supporters group preparing to launch their ‘Abstain for the All Blacks’ stunt. Nutbags. Now apparently it works like this: fans sign up to abstain from the pleasures of the flesh, and they’re then given black rubber rings to wear (it’s unclear at this stage if the ring goes around the neck or elsewhere) to show they’re supporting the campaign. It is being fronted by Sean Fitzpatrick (how many World Cups has he won?) and the idea has been rubber-stamped by the New Zealand Rugby Union. But before we get…
