When was the last time you saw To'omua play at 10 BR?

The last 10 -15 minutes of Bledisloe 2, and he looked comfortable in the position. Is that recent enough?

Beale is garbage at 10. he has extensively established this by playing garbage every time he's played 10. He's played brilliant footy from fullback and 12. Never 10.

That's an urban myth D. Beale plays 10 currently for around half of each test match. He is constantly in first receiver and he looks quite a bit more creative than Foley when he does. If he played 10, he would no doubt share the 10 and 12 spots with whomever was put in the 12 jersey.

Nevertheless, I would prefer to see both of them replaced at some stage this series just to see if a backline made up of players who are prepared to defend in their nominated positions would be more solid and stable, as I suspect,

He played 9 minutes at 10 according to ESPN. Can’t really judge a player based on that.

To'omua did play 10 for Leicester this year at least a couple of times and made the highlight reels (or the youtube highlight clips, anyway). Of course there's an awful lot the highlight reels don't show.

It's also English club footy so not exactly like lining up against the ABs. Then again, if he's trading on his club form then he's in good company in the wallaby squad.

What i meant was, he is clearly trying to create depth in the 10 position, either by making players available or giving other players a shot.

I don't understand what else he could do. Should he throw Stewart in against the Argies just to see if he's better at Test level than he is at Super level?

probably not.

but i would like to see that force 10, deegan (?) be brought into the wider squad for experience. i like the look of him, but its early days yet.

To'omua will presumably be the 10 at the Rebels when he arrives next year. Beale was a 10 right through his schoolboy career where he played maybe his best footy. A Beale 10 and To'omua 12 combo could certainly work.
Its odd that many put so much blame on Foley. He's one of our players who puts everything on the line in every test he plays. When he does dominate, score points and directs our attack well he receives little praise. Put him behind a dominant pack or even one with parity and he is fine.
With Foley, Beale and To'omua in our 23 the inside backs are well covered. What we need is consistent front foot ball from our set piece and the breakdown.

It’s definitely easier to pull off when we are persistently not good, on or off the field. Plenty of material to work with.

Its odd that many put so much blame on Foley. He's one of our players who puts everything on the line in every test he plays. When he does dominate, score points and directs our attack well he receives little praise. Put him behind a dominant pack or even one with parity and he is fine.
With Foley, Beale and To'omua in our 23 the inside backs are well covered. What we need is consistent front foot ball from our set piece and the breakdown.

JB, do you think he fared well in Bledisloe 2 when the pack was at least at parity? If managing the backline is a measure of the No 10, then it would be best to forget all about his efforts last time around.

Went through and you're right. Just so happened to watch Leicester for two weeks in that three week window, haha. 19 games at 12, 3 at 10.

Though, for the people who doubt him as a 10 (and as a goal kicker) check out those Quins and Saracens games. Showed his class.

You might be the only one judging To'omua on those 9 minutes UTG.

While he has split his time over the years playing 10 and 12, both here and overseas, he was a better all round, more skilful player than Foley and his form seems to have carried on in the UK. He won't have forgotten how to play 10 or 12 here as his cameos in the trial and Bledisloe matches confirm. What is it that they say about class being eternal?

I would, without a doubt, prefer to see To'omua at 10 for the Wallabies. He has pretty much every skill you could want from a rugby player; he even has a decent lineout throw. His ability to perform at 12 is not because he is a 12, but because of his sheer quality, and it is no surprise that the Brumbies performed at their best since 2004 with him at 10.

If nothing else, being dropped may spark Foley into fighting even harder for the jersey, and bring back the same level of class we saw against England in the RWC.

It's not personal. The 10 is rugby's quarterback, really, so when things aren't working out they perhaps receive too much of the blame and when they are working out, too much of the credit. He has been bolted into the starting lineup over a period where we have been pretty poor, so right now it's the former.

He did put Hodge in for a try on the weekend, and it was a good to see a wallaby drawing a man then passing the ball.

I agree that his effort is never questionable.

Given who is available, the biggest bang for your buck straight-swap right now is To'omua for Beale. Instantly plugs a big hole in the defence and, given the manner in which To'omua and Beale share 1st receiver duties at the moment, allows To'omua to take kicks in general play without changing shape much.
