when will the Cheika nightmare end?

On the 11th of October 2019 I reckon. We are in serious danger of not being good enough to get out of our group. Even if that happens, the Poms will knock us out in the quarters. Fuck we're shit at the moment and the coaching staff seem to be sleepwalking into a disaster next year.

Seriously. Bring dingo back. He’d be the best coach available and would have a point to prove. One year contract. Huge financial bonus if he makes it to the semis, finals and wins.

Can’t agree with Dingo.

Didn’t mind the concept of Lancaster after the RWC though.

Why Lancaster? He doesn’t seem to have a great deal of experience coaching at the top level especially for what we need, and has fairly mixed results.

I’d be getting jake white as head wallabies coach, Laurie fisher as forwards coach, Les Kiss defensive coach, no idea who you’d get for attack

And I’d have Robbie Deans as a director of coaching for all super rugby teams, he is quality at provincial level and could do a similar role to Byrne in going around to all teams, enforcing skill standards, mentoring super coaches and creating positive winning culture

I’m hugely against the argument that we don’t have the talent, while we may not have the numbers that league have we still have quality players, we lack massively in the coaching department. We seem to possibly be starting on getting it right at provincial, nows the time to get the national side on the right track

Dingo at least coached what everyone would like to see of the current crop “play what’s in front of
You” and don’t stick to a mindless game plan. He was often derived on this forum for saying “...play what’s in front of you” but I think most here would understand now what he was trying to do. There is no singular game plan. There is rugby intelligence and experience which tells you what you’re up against, what the strategy should be and how to exploit the opportunities.
As far as I can tell cheikas strategy is pretty mindless. I do wonder if he has too much control over offense and defense? Gray was pretty terrible at the rebels as well but larkhams brumbies weren’t this bad and larkham himself
Didn’t play like this.
Hard to understand.
Jake white is so awful from a playing style perspective I don’t know if
I could support him.

Lancaster? After this or last World Cup??
Isn’t he an assistant now who had atrocious results for England?
Vern Cottee but you’d need to probably offer him big one year money or long term money
I’d be looking at the top
Kiwi coaches who won’t be the next all blacks coach...

I'd be looking away from a 'vibe/motivational' coach (eg Jones, Cheika, White, Deans) and more towards a technical/skills coach.

The issues we have aren't a lack of hunger or desire. Our issues are technical - game plan, set piece, skills.

Deans approached the game like Cheika - good in the mental arena but with no discernable plan B (or even plan A) when things went pear-shaped.

I'd be looking to a Kiwi Super coach like Dave Rennie, or someone in the NH who is a bit more hands-on and technical than what we have at the moment.

Nail - Head.

Not just player skills though. They need opposition analysis to go with strategy and game plan.

I don’t think Jake or Robbie are motivational Coaches.
Ronnie in particular has enjoyed too much long term success for that to be the case. As highlighted elsewhere, the luster of a pure motivational coach wears off after a couple years.
Dennie would be perfect. One year with big upside and option for 3 more.

After not getting the Aus super job he became the coach of Leinster, has them firing and is now short in the betting for the Ireland job

It was a loss to Super Rugby. Easy to speak in retrospect but Reds missed a good chance there.

If you look at realistic options, I think Rennie, Gatland, Robertson + Cotter are close to the head of the queue.

Obviously depending on what happens with AB, Ireland, Wales, England.

I'd love to look at Rob Baxter as well.

Add Joe Shmidt, Chris Boyd, Mark McCall and Johan Ackermann.

Agree 100% on this, to be honest. Only disclaimer is that I think we have 0 chance of Schmidt - he's either coaching the All Blacks or Ireland, I would have thought.

But outside that, excellent suggestions.

I also wonder whether to sort the current mess out a little, Alan Gaffney could come in to help Cheik. They've been successful together before, and his experience and calm could be vital. And clearly still knows what he is doing, as he was Caretaker at Northampton last year.

I think it'd be silly to fire Cheika pre-world cup. His contract expires at the end of the next one and he has already said he is moving on after that. Australian rugby has a monetary obligation to not pay him out as we don't have any spare $ lying around. I think he is will have them at least to the semifinals come RWC 2019.

The teams had poor results that stem from a variety of issues which are not all his fault. Do we really have the calibre of player to deliver the results everyone is asking?

Agree and it is also worth noting that there is no way you could bed in new attack and defense systems pre-RWC. I do see merit though in looking at the coaches having success rather than the usual chat of "get Ewen back", "Jake White would be good" or "how about Tatsy Taylor"
