The teams had poor results that stem from a variety of issues which are not all his fault.

Bollocks. Complete bollocks.

Plenty of us have been calling out his strategy, systems, training, selections, playmakers, captains etc etc etc

For years.

The great Cheika has made his bed, now he must sleep in it. Completely his own making.

Look I’d like the depth that the ABs have, but our issue fundamentally is coaching. Imvho

Absolute rubbish. He is inheriting players who are not good enough. That is not his fault and you cannot blame him for that. You cannot blame him for individual errors in attack or defence. Those are a result of the system and development they come from.

How can you say they aren’t good enough though? The talent is there. They HAVE beaten the all blacks, They HAVE beaten SA, Ireland, England etc These players have been instrumental in winning super rugby titles. The talent IS there and to say it isn’t is just bullshit and a cheap cop out. When this team is on song they can beat anyone. It’s about getting the right players in the right positions, coaching out a few of their flaws and getting them to execute a smart game plan

I mean, are you saying the parlous state of Australian rugby is all Cheika's fault?

Cause that's special shit.

We had to play the entire rugby championship without any recognized 6, 8 or 13. Maybe Fardy could have fixed one of those gaps. Maybe.

Saying you 'would like the ABs depth' is not doing our lack of depth justice.

Although i guess i applaud your optimism.

Great Post, well said.
Very true, the talent is there. Just need it to click and some consistency.

The players aren't consistent indicates they are not as good as others. All sports show that one team can win one off games. All I'm saying is it isn't entirely Cheika's fault and there are multiple factors that go into what is happening right now. He is one of them of course but I generally believe he is inherently a good coach. I just don't buy into the idea that another coach could just transform this team into a RWC winning one is what I'm saying.

Cheik is a hack. Be honest with yourself.
That’s harsh. He has been successful but has lost the plot. He is spiraling downward having lost his assistants and his players some time ago one must assume. It’s a shame that RA did not recognise this, as many here did, and act on it then. No backbone or vision from RA.
Now it’s getting to the point where it’s almost impossible to make the necessary change.
It’s not as if Cheika is not making an effort, just that he is no longer effective. Most likely because he is unable to release control completely and he has not put the right assistants around him.
He has been circling the wagons and is perpetually in denial. It will not end well.

Is that the same RA that says 4 super teams will be better than 5
Change coach now and we are destined to fail .

FWIW, I would keep Cheika until the RWC unless there is an outstanding option ready to come in.

I would not keep Raiwalui, Grey or Larkham, however.

ofc Cheika is not responsible for all the problems in Australian rugby. What a straw man by the various posters calling this.

One of the broader and fundamental issues, across the board, is lack of accountability. This starts with the Chair, goes through the team that selects board members, the Board, the CEO and the Unions themselves who supposedly have the right to hold the above accountable.

In the mean time those who think that now is not a time to be holding Cheika to account, under what circumstances would it be appropriate?

As it stands, I actually think we missed the boat. The chance to chop the clown was 12 months ago. I wouldn't change things at this late change. It would be an error however to read this as a vote of confidence.

You lose all credibility and just sound like an angry and petulant reds fan when you start calling people clowns.

Sure he needs to go, and probably should have done before this year. Calling people names is pointless.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't be sacked.

Coaching—even for good coaches—is rarely a tenured position. People get stale. They get tired. They run out of ideas. And Cheika, in particular, hasn't been that long-term kind of coach. Everyone knew that, even when he was hired.

Right now, he's a busted flush.

Could he (say) move to England or Japan, take up a fresh team and lead them to good things?

Probably could. Just not in perpetuity. It's 3-4 years per job then done, IMO.

I just don't buy into the idea that another coach could just transform this team into a RWC winning one is what I'm saying.

I'm sure all Wallaby fans have that one sachet of Kool-Aid stashed away somewhere with a use-by date of 2003 …

The reality is that Australia is not a genuine contender for #1 anymore. However, this side does have the cattle to win more than 23% of the time.

Yeah, that's right. It's twenty three f**cking percent in the last twelve months.

The sugar hit from a coaching cleanout is needed for the next twelve months.

(obviously the structural reform of the game has to be happening as well, but that's going to take several RWC cycles - even with a competent administration in place, which is not a given)

Inherit? He took over in 2015....Inheriting rubbish would only be valid if a) the wallabies were 7th when he took over, not him taking them down to 7th over 3 years and b) if it was a squad he didn't have a say in building. Which he did, it's his squad which he has built.

Joe Blow , you are right. We may fail if we leave all in place but I do not believe we are far off and judging by the last weekends performances neither are five other teams as well as the AB's.
Better to ride this world cup out and then go for change imv.

Maybe. Its hard to see us doing well though, particularly if we come up against the poms in the quarters. That may just be the pill we have to swallow before rebuilding from the ground up after Japan. Or maybe from the top down?

Both. Rebuilding sorely needed at both ends. And the middle.
