Gdaygday

Riverview will win again this season and shore will take over their reign in the 2020 season. Shore juuusstt beat augustines on the weekend... in previous years they were destroying all crews in term 4 by massive margins

Could be closer than you think though definitely times look to be slower this year so the winner could come from a number of schools. Riverview and Shore arguably have the best programme atm so suspect either will be the crew to beat.

I am not that familiar with Riverview rowing though a quick comparison shows a couple of boys returning from the 1st 8. The other crews they were in last year weren't the strongest so will be interesting to see how fast Iggies is this weekend.

Anyone has any insight into their 1st 8 and how they are looking ?

looks as though it will be a very close year with 4 seconds separating the top 5 crew and if you add shore to the mix that makes it 4 seconds between the top 6. Joeys seem to have a very quick last 500 which is what has one them the last few races

Agreed it isn’t particularly fast but as we all know, 2000m times are very dependant on environmental conditions on the day. It seems like several boats are capable of sub 6 mins.
Definitely a good season of racing ahead and after seeing the All Blacks genuinely beaten last night most would agree it makes for a much more interesting dynamic when no one team is way ahead of all the others.

Joey's look the pick to me at the moment as they are rowing within themselves for the first 1,500m and only pick the rate up for the last 500m.
Keep an eye out for Scots in January, as they have had 4 boy's pull out of the 1st V111 this season (2 in the last 2 weeks) wanting to focus on their rugby training, and they have another 2 boys out injured.
With 6 year 10 boy's (year 11 next year) in the boat at the moment and with their 2 strongest rowers to come back from injury they might surprise a few people next year.

Well, well, well! it JUST GOT INTERESTING!!!

I saw that race, it was great advertising for school boys rowing! 0.01 margin between 1st and 2nd... I am wondering if they have a photo of the start line up too, I doubt it can be lined up that exactly. The rules of boat racing should start considering dead races...beside that great race by the boys!

The voting poll implies that shore and joeys are the front runners (which would be a reasonable assumption after the Grammar Regatta), yet the more recent Scots Regatta saw Kings with a first and then a second. I would think it's a dog fight between, Shore, Joeys, Ignatius, Newington, Kings and Scots.

I would think it's a dog fight between, Shore, Joeys, Ignatius, Newington and Kings, with potential for Scots to join that group in time.

Thoughts on Sydney High's chances?

Certainly looks like this will be one of the closet 1st VIII seasons for many years with all six powerhouse schools in contention for the HOTR. I agree that Joeys are showing strong early form but the margins are so slight it’s hard to pick a favorite this side of the Christmas break. Lots of chat around the Scots crew this season who, like the others, are showing good early form. Big signing with the Scots 1st VIII being coached by Australian National/Olympic coach Jason Baker.

Hi all - just found this site and thought would give some colour from south of the border...

Melb boys 1st VIIIs - Scotch predicted to be strong again with 6 returning from last year's winning 1st VIII (understand 1 has been dropped to the 2nd VIII) - they had a convincing win at the Melbourne Head in November 2018 (3,500 metres Head race - 2nd place St Kevins was 28 seconds behind). Brighton Grammar (2nd in 2018 HOR) are building a strong program but unknown if have picked up any of the lost time from 2018 HOR - they did not race in Vic as an VIII before the no row period kicked in in December (they did race in NZ as an 8 for the first time this season mid Dec against Shore and Joeys - coming 3rd - 3 seconds behind Shore (1st) and 2 seconds behind Joeys (2nd). Next big regatta will be Aust Day at Barwon - though only 1500 metre 4 lane course it should be a better guide of where everyone is at as schools come out of rowing camps with more settled crews mid/late January.

Melb girls 1st VIIIs - St Catherines, Geelong College, Geelong Grammar and MLC all expected to be up there. St Caths (1st) and the 2 Geelong schools finished within 1 second of each other at the 3500m Melbourne Head (MLC did not race). Geelong Grammar subsequently beat MLC by ~2.5 seconds on the Barwon (1500m) a couple of weeks later (St Caths and Geelong College did not race). Again, Barwon regatta late Jan will give a better idea of who is where.

One question that perhaps someone can answer for me. The APS schools in Victoria have a very strict policy regarding rowing over Christmas break (no row period/use of school equipment/number of boys who can row together in club crews/number of camp days) - with the sanction for any breach recently increased to now be relegation to the HOR B Final. Is there something similar in NSW that governs/restricts training/racing over the Christmas break?

As far as I'm concerned this is a schoolboy rowing page concerned with the GPS crews.

Sincere apologies sanker - I mistakenly thought Lindommer (who has been around here on this forum a lot longer than you or I) was not asking a rhetorical question regarding Melbourne boys/girls rowing. Also very sorry for asking for some insights on GPS rowing rules as compared to APS here in Victoria. I will behave better in future.

Good luck to all GPS crews - it was good to see the Shore Grade 10 crews down here in Geelong last weekend. They look to have a very strong 10A crew.

For what it is worth - Scotch looking very strong down here for HOR 2019 - lets see what happens at NSW state champs in just over 2 weeks.

BTW - are you sure it is spelled "sanker"?

Cheers
