Is an ODI 50 enough to keep SMarsh in the Test team?

Re: Sri Lanka, your lot shouldn't drop a game to them in any format, they're a poor imitation of SL past.

Shaun Marsh didn’t make the test squad for Sri Lanka. He’d need to completely dominate Shield to have any chance in playing in the Ashes.

Thought Sri Lanka were going to get your blokes last night but the collapse was pretty bad. They actually bowled quite well.

^ didn't realise your Test team had been picked already.

SL bowled well to begin with but fell away badly from 5/55 to let us get to 179. Similarly their batting imploded when they looked to be on track.

Australia go 1-0. Looked like they left 20-30 out there with the bat but great opening spells from Behrendorff and Richardson did the damage despite an excellent 100 from Sharma. Jhye Richardson was fantastic, will definitely play all three formats in the future.

Can you guys hurry up and get this tour over with? Srsly. I'm twiddling my thumbs here waiting for the #1 ranked test and #2 ranked ODI team to arrive here for their test and ODI series against the #3 ranked (test AND ODI, beaches) Blackcaps.

I look fondly back on the days where our dominance in cricket compensated for Bledislode trouncings.

India win game 2 with 4 balls to spare. A frustrating game for us, had ample opportunities to wrap up the series there but wickets falling at crucial times, bad fielding, and some poor bowling (where were the yorkers?) let India get away with it. Definitely signs of improvement but still need to iron out the creases.

So the CA XI were playing Sri Lanka in Hobart today and after a shaky start they made it to 317-5 and declared after 75 overs (both sides agreed to 75 overs each pregame).

BR your man Kurtis Patterson made 157 from 209 while Jake Doran made 102 striking at 79, both players aren’t in the Sri Lanka squad. Meanwhile Burns, Labuschagne, and Renshaw all went cheaply (and they’ll all probably play in Brisbane) while Pucovski looked good for his 30 and got himself out hooking to fine leg. I’d like to see Patterson added to the squad, what’s the point in playing these games if you can’t put your name forward for selection.

agree KP should be in the squad. I did hear the pitch was doing a lot early and settled down a little later

The score seem to suggest that’s how it played. Patterson was in quite early though, I think by the time Doran got to the crease it had quietened down. Good knocks by both of them regardless

I don't think you can be too reactionary with this stuff, and throwing blokes in test teams because they made a tonne against a touring side.

I watched most of the game. Burns, Renshaw and Labushagne got good ones early, though you'd hope they could tough it out a bit better than they did. Pucovski and Sangha's dismissals were more disappointing - caught at fine leg off half-trackers.

I don't think Patterson is radically better than the others, though he clearly batted very well here. In fact they are all at roughly the same level. Burns and Renshaw have a bit longer track record, which is why they got the nod, and I'd imagine the Pucovski/Patterson decision was a coin toss.

The really sad thing here is you can't say to Patterson 'great dig, now one or two more of those for NSW and you're in'. Instead he goes back to Big Bash, which is ridiculous. They really need to keep the 2nd XI comp going in this period, at least.

The thing is Patterson has the highest average of any Shield player since 2015. I agree you wouldn’t throw someone like Doran in there who’s only averaging 28 in his short career but Patterson’s knock confirms he is in form and on top of the Sri Lankan attack. There’s a strong case to be made for his inclusion.

That's fair, and I think he's a great player who probably should have been chosen in the first place.

I do think that now you've picked the squad, there's a risk you look silly if you add him in at this late stage.

Yeah Patterson really has to feel a bit stiff. He's made some decent runs in Shield cricket and not been on the selectors radar at all.
