All out for 230 at the MCG. Chahal taking 6 for India. Bit of assistance in the pitch for the spinners but some very poor batting. We’ll have to wait for India to bat to make a full judgment but presuming they chase it down easily we’ll need to seriously review some of the selections. We certainly won’t be winning World Cups being 2-30 odd after the power play. Warner and Short should be opening imho.

How you gunna go and drop Kohli and MS? What are we paying these muppets for?

Ill go and stand around in a field for free.

Wow. Speechless at the bowling at the death, bowling outside off with no men in the deep. And let’s not get started on the fielding.

Pretty horrible game from both sides and pretty poor series overall. NZ will mince India if they play like this.

Talk about egg on face. Selectors stated before the game that it would have no bearing on the test team makeup. Why do selectors in all sports seem to shoot themselves in the feet with their thoughtless proclamations from time to time?

Some of us could see the argument for including Patterson well before his two heroic innings in Hobart. If he gets to play, he needs to continue his form and his spot in the team will be confirmed for the Ashes. Opportunity knocks.

If he debuts he’ll be facing an attack that failed to dismiss him in both innings a week before. Can you go into your test debut with more confidence? Great opportunity to hit the ground running and lock up the number 5 position before the Ashes.

On second reading, not many Sethfrickens, either.

EDIT: Kohli top run-scorer in both formats. Must be close to knocking Tendulkar off his GOAT-for-India perch.

Real shame NZ don't play more tests. Whilst I hate their rugby team, i prefer their cricket team to ours. Their team seems full of good blokes.

^ the current lot are a vast improvement over those from the Chris Cairns/ Lou Vincent/ Adam Parore era but my favorite remains the Crowe-lead team of CWC 1992, not least because me & my mate got shit-faced with half of them the night before they played Zimbabwe in Napier (TBF pretty much no-one expected there to be a match given the weather was so shit).

EDIT: this is the ICC T'sOTY judging panel:

Bit harsh to label Simmons as just a coach, did he not briefly captain WI & was he not at that time regarded as a leading all-rounder?

Anyhoo, here's the Award nominations they came up with:

I went to the Gabba for the Oz v NZ test in 1985 (when Hadlee got 9 for 52 and a catch!) Anyway we were watching the kiwis in the outside nets (which used to be around near the old fig trees close to the school). They asked one of my mates 9we were 12 I guess) to help field at the back of the nets. Chris Cairns was batting. He was smacking them so hard straight. He bruised my mate's hand. He was very friendly though and gave my mate his gloves.

random story. The thread can continue on topic now.

Cummins and Head named as VCs for the Sri Lankan tests. Not sure it means a great deal bar being a nice recognition for those two.

I think it means a little bit. It's the first clear sign that Cummins is now quite high in the order of succession, and stands a real chance of being the first full-time fast bowling skipper.

Travis Head is also an interesting choice, considering Usman Khawaja is Queensland skipper and a far more experienced player. Given Mitch Marsh previously held that position though I'm not sure it means a great deal regarding his long-term selection prospects.

There was a time in the past (maybe the 80s?) when being named VC was definitely a career killer. I seem to remember the Aussie team went through a succession of players named as VC; probably due either to loss of form or injury. Maybe those times have returned? VC is the poisoned chalice?

apparently he's #1 on the Aussie contract list (assuming that disregards Smith and Warner) which surprised me. Don't disagree though.

It’s an interesting one, I know they think Travis Head is a future captain but that’s obviously contingent on him securing his place in the side as a batsman. Would be good if NSW could throw Cummins the captaincy next Shield season so we can see what he has got.
