2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

A note on Kayo given that it's (probably) a bit of a game changer.

I have no doubt that lots of people are now streaming sport where they previously weren't. Kayo streaming numbers haven't been released so far.

However, I don't think it should impact on the ratings numbers too much though given the following points:
  • oztam base subscription TV ratings on a sample of 2,120 homes with subscription TV across Australia https://oztam.com.au/TheOzTAMPanel.aspx
  • ratings are based on audio, so if anyone on the panel watches Foxtel, Foxtel Go (when it existed), Kayo, an illegal internet stream, or in any other format, as long as the audio matches the database, it will be recorded in the rating data.
  • Foxtel subscribers previously had access to Foxtel Go, so if their preference was to watch away from home or in a bedroom under the covers etc, they already had that option.
If ratings (note not viewers!) are down this year, it's probably because fewer people with Foxtel are watching rugby, not because they are choosing a different method of watching rugby.
Always good to remember, the ratings are an awful way to measure how many people are watching a match, but they are the best we have and are what the industry base their advertising etc on.

Sevens didn't trouble the scorers on any of the three days for ratings in a weekend dominated by cricket on Foxtel. Pretty big drop from 100k it did a couple of years ago.

19,000 on Saturday and 24,000 sell out on Sunday is a better story, but still a big revenue hit for RA compared to previous years

I can only assume they were compensated by the NSW Govt for moving it to Spotless so the revenue hit may not have been as big.

is that confirmed?

Not confirmed but pretty likely I'd say.

With Allianz Stadium out of action until 2021, Castle further indicated Sydney’s hosting status by admitting she was in talks with the new Parramatta Stadium about moving the tournament there next summer.
“We are in discussions around that at the moment. We are having really positive discussions. We have to weigh up how this stadium works for us. There are always benefits from an event organizational point of view to run it at a location two years in a row,” Castle said.
“But obviously the new western Sydney stadium is exciting because it will be bright and shiny and new and it’s a rectangle and all those things.
"So there’s been no final decisions made but we will weigh both those things up.”

Numbers out for Kayo

https://mediaweek.com.au/news-corp-reveals-subscription-numbers-for-kayo-updates-newspaper-subs/

As of February 5, 2019, there were 115,000 Kayo Sports subscribers, of which approximately 100,000 were paying subscribers. Broadcast subscriber churn in the quarter was 15.6% compared to 14.5% in the prior year, reflecting the impact of the price increase implemented in October. Broadcast ARPU for the quarter declined 3% compared to the prior year to A$78 (US$56), reflecting a 2% negative impact related to the adoption of the new revenue recognition standard.

other good thing about those Kayo numbers is that they haven't cannibalised the premium foxtel subs. so hopefully these are new people to the pay for sport pool... and hopefully some of them are rugby people!

this current quarter is typically the biggest for new subs, as the major footy codes are getting ready to kick off.

for rugby's sake lets hope plenty of rugby fans can shell out the $25 for at least 6 months a year.

What will be interesting will be if these numbers pick up once Super Rugby, NRL & AFL start.

The major summer sports are cricket, tennis & soccer with both cricket and tennis on FTA as well.

Like some others, I'm waiting for GoT to finish and then will probably dump my current Foxtel Now subscription and grab Kayo in time for the RWC.........

looks like less than 35,000 viewers each day though would be hard to measure as it went for 10 hours each day I guess. Wonder how many unique viewers watched at least 1 game over the 2 1/2 days.

56k for the Brumbies/Rebels game and 40k for the Chiefs/Highlanders. Could have been worse though. The A-League managed just 18k and 31k for their Friday night fixtures.
