The GPS crews are out at SIRC this Saturday and it will be interesting to see how the crews compare after their holiday camps.
I am still expecting Joeys to be the ones to beat, but it will be close. I know Scots have 5 year 11 boy's (possibly 6) in their boat, and I think they will be a little light on this year but they won't be too far off the pace. The 2nd V111 however might surprise a few people.

Sincere apologies sanker - I mistakenly thought Lindommer (who has been around here on this forum a lot longer than you or I) was not asking a rhetorical question regarding Melbourne boys/girls rowing. Also very sorry for asking for some insights on GPS rowing rules as compared to APS here in Victoria. I will behave better in future.

Good luck to all GPS crews - it was good to see the Shore Grade 10 crews down here in Geelong last weekend. They look to have a very strong 10A crew.

For what it is worth - Scotch looking very strong down here for HOR 2019 - lets see what happens at NSW state champs in just over 2 weeks.

BTW - are you sure it is spelled "sanker"?

Cheers

This is the thread to discuss ALL matters pertaining to schoolboys and schoolgirls rowing from anywhere in Australia. And, if any of these crews decide to front up at Henley that can also be discussed here.

Any news from those schools which row on the northern rivers of New South Wales?

Scots have 3 year 12 rowers in the 1st 8 this week with one coming back next week who was 1st 8 last year. Looking forward to Saturday, don’t reckon there’ll be too much in it as per the two regattas last term. Nothing much separating he first 4-5 crews for mine but still plenty of training to do before March 23rd.

Great day of racing a SIRC today! Interesting to see shore come out fairly weak in the heat of the 1st VIII only to come out and power through the final, we’ll done to all the winners day aswell. It seems as though scots have had a great holiday training block with their second VIII claiming the win by clear water and their 1st VIII coming second just finishing off a typically fastly finishing joeys. Great to see a very close 1st VIII final with only 6 seconds separating 6th and 1st. Shore were typically strong in the juniors winni most races

Shore is taking their whole GPS squad to the Nagambie regatta this weekend. It will be interesting how the 1st VIII goes against the scotch 1st VIII. I hear they have 5 members continuing in the 1st VIII from last season. It will also be interesting to see if the 2nd VIII from Shore picks up their game and beat the Victorian 2nd VIIIs, I hear they do not have a as strong 2nd VIII division. Time will only tell....

Are any of the other Sydney schools heading south? I'd like to see Auggies line up in the VIII's. Their cherry picking of the GPS events for the win is pretty sad.

Scotch 2nd VIII posted times at Barwon a few weeks back that were generally faster than all of the 1st VIIIs that day (other than Scotch 1st VIII of course) - so expect them to be quick against Shore on Saturday.

Brighton Grammar 1st VIII still has not fronted a Victorian regatta this season as an VIII - preferring to race in small boats. NSW State Champs following weekend will be its first race against the Victorian APS VIIIs. So far, looks like Brighton, Melbourne Grammar, Geelong Grammar, St Kevins and Wesley 1st VIIIs are coming up to race in Penrith that weekend. Scotch not yet entered but expect them to also come up - if for no other reason than to stamp their authority over Brighton (given next 2000 metre opportunity won't be until Vic State Champs early March).

Geelong Grammar looks to be the strongest of the Victorian girls 1st VIIIs currently entered for the NSW State Champs - though fair to say they are currently a bit off the pace versus St Catherines and MLC.

Scotch have 6 returning from last year's 1st VIII (including 1 from Henley winning 2017 crew) - all 6 were in the crew for the Barwon regatta - looks like 1 has been dropped for the regatta tomorrow.

Clean sweep by Scotch over Shore (and everybody else) in Open School VIIIs at Nagambie this am. Not ideal weather conditions in Victoria today (as demonstrated in the times).

1st VIIIs - Scotch 1st in 6:28 with Shore 2nd - margin ~7 seconds.
2nd VIIIs - Scotch 1st in 6:49 with Shore 2nd - margin ~ 5 seconds.
3rd VIIIs - Scotch 1st then Shore - margin ~1 second
4th VIIIs - Scotch, Melb Grammar and then Shore (margins ~3 seconds and ~10 seconds).

We get excited up north about the Sydney rowing but it appears it isn't on the same field as the mexicans. I'd love to see Scotch go to Henley again. Was really pleasing to watch Aussie schoolboys go well there.

Like all school sports should be, each year brings something different. This year Shore don't look as strong and Scotch look to be very strong. Last few years I think Shore has held the upper hand though it does alternate. Scotch seemingly have an iron grip down south as their rowing programme is a lot better than other schools. In NSW the gap is far narrower, though undoubtedly Shore have the strongest consistently. This year is anyones guess which is great for racing….

Just looking at the pole "Who will win 2019 HOTR?", Scots currently have a narrow lead. Can I ask why Scots is currently the crowd favourite and not Joeys, Riverview or Shore.

due to the fact they now have JB as the 1st VIII coach. He is very good. He has coached at the very top level and got some pretty good results. You can already seen the difference he has made on the 1st VIII crew, last season they would be back with Grammar and High but in the St Josephs regatta they were contesting for 1st place. I would love to see them take out the big one this season

The true sign of a good coach but not the best program, no depth within the squad but the ability to compete within their top two crews.

MR - fair to say Scotch has dominated APS rowing in Victoria for a long time. They have won all but 2 of the 1st VIII races at HOR since 2004 (the other 2 were Melbourne Grammar) and their depth (at least the last 5 years) all the way down to Year 9 has been impressive. Brighton Grammar and St Kevins have probably done the most to improve their overall programs over the past couple of years.

Very simply - rowing means everything to Scotch and they will do everything in their power to win each year. And good luck to them! They have allegedly sailed too close to the wind in the past (apparently they were penalised with a "bad" lane a couple of years ago for breaking the summer holiday APS rules) - but they are by no means alone. They start their rowers a year earlier in sculls than some/most of the APS schools. I wonder if they also derive a little bit of advantage (now that so much more time is spent on training) in some key traditional competitor schools having other programs that can get in the way of long term rower development (Geelong Grammar Timbertop for all Year 9s the obvious example) or to a lesser extent MGS "Beyond the Gate" hiking etc in Nov/Dec each year for 3 weeks for all Year 10s - which anecdotally at least I understand impacts conditioning levels and certainly limits time on the river as a 1st VIII crew before the ~ 2 month APS moratorium kicks in each year. (Geelong Grammar and MGS have come 2nd a combined 9 times to Scotch out of the 13 times Scotch has won since it became such a force in APS from 2004).

If Scotch happens to win the SB8+ at the Nationals in 2019 I would basically call it a draw with Shore over the last 9 years (Scotch and Shore would have 4 each and Nudgee 1 win). So they pretty much stand out - at least in SB8+.

I will play Devil's Advocate (or perhaps parochial Mexican) for one moment and post this question - for 2 reasons (neither of which are controlled by AAGPS or its schools), do Shore/AAGPS schools have a bit of an advantage over Scotch/APS schools?

1) I asked the question previously as to whether AAGPS has any sort of moratorium during the Christmas break like the APS do - I can't find any reference to one. Basically, APS crews cannot row in any combination greater than 2 (either School or club) or use school based equipment/boats/trainers between ~9 Dec - 31 Jan each year apart from a max 10 days of rowing camps - with a blanket no row/no school organised training between 20 Dec - 10 Jan each year. See https://www.apssport.org.au/sports/rowing-2/ .

2) Home ground advantage - the Nationals have been held in Sydney since 2013. No interstate travel, warm up regatta earlier in the month at the centre etc.

6 APS schools, 6 AAGPS schools, Nudgee and St Augustines in the SB8+ this weekend - most bringing 1st and 2nd VIIIs. Hope the weather is good!

Cheers

who are we backing for the champion schoolboys race tomorrow? I think Scotch will get a silver with Shore taking out the gold.
