Round 5 - Brumbies vs Waratahs - Friday 15 March @ 7:45pm in Canberra

The Honey Badger

Jim Lenehan (48)
Clearly it was a deliberate tactic, to play a very deep formation. This to counter rush defense and make the rush defence run further and disrupt the defensive line. Could sort of see what they were trying to do but were unable exploit it. Needed some way to get in behind the rush defense.

Hanigan was IMO the best out there for the Tahs. He runs the ball very well and created opportunies. Couldn't believe it when he was first replaced. Can only assume it was forced by the injury he took into the game.

Got to question Gibson emptying the bench when gamed are in the balance.

Also, Brumbies fans boo kickers, defo the worst team in ruggers.

It's just one of those fun things you do at Tah games. Put the heat on the "iceman" ;) and see if he will turn into a puddle.

Also, we need to what we can from the stands to compensate for Lilo's kicking most of the time.

Ugh. I dont get how the Brumbies have any fans left. At least the Tahs put together some attacking footy occasionally.

Who wants to see mauls? Fucking mauls. By all rights your only fans should be those three old blokes in the pub who like to reminise about their 'glory days' flopping on rucks.

Anyway. Simone looked good to me. Surprised he got dropped for that other bloke last match.

Dont agree with the Hanigan assessments. I thought this match was a bad reversion to the mean. Lost the ball with one of the weakest carries ive seen from a forward in years. Padded his stats out with a few runs up the wing when an actual winger shouldve been doing it.

Ditto! It exactly why crowds have walked away and many (like me) don't think McKellar is the man that can bring the crowds back.

My thoughts on this game :-

1) My recurrent thoughts throughout the game was "How dire can a game be? How many poorly executed skills can we see? WTF was that?"
2) Point one pretty much sums it up. Nothing really to get excited about. The Tahs put together maybe three or four phases of play which were very good but then they were invariably let down by a horrendous execution of basic skills. The usual idiots infesting the Foxsports commentary gave the usual excuses about intensity etc etc and if this was a one off game where we see that we could accept that. The Brumbies did nothing of note really except maul well as they have for years, but that intensity ……..
3) Coaching is being brought up again and again and it is undoubtedly a factor, BUT, there are simply too many instances of full time professionals some of whom have been professionals their entire "working" life who have abysmal skills and have shown zero improvement in those skills in all those years. The most easily given example is Kurtley Beale, how many years has he been an alleged play maker and he still cannot pass left to right. Three games running in the flyhalf position he has turned his back to the opposition to execute a pass to the right hand side of the field and this from a bloke who has been selected at 10 for the Wallabies and numerous professional teams. It just isn't good enough and to still be in that position of not being able execute a core skill for the position after more than a decade of "professionalism" being paid multiples of the median wage is just a disgrace. This to me is not just a failure of coaching, it is the personal failure of the player to seek genuine improvement and speaks to me of an arrogance in some players, mouthing the platitudes of improvement but really doing nothing but meeting pretty basic KPIs.

That was a fairly dire game, but happy for the win...........

Not sure how that wasn't a try to Lonergan towards the end there?

Don't think the Tahs scrum did too badly. Don't think we have lost a scrum yet. I thought the Tahs scrum countered the Brums preety well. 1 scrum the Brums front row came up. Thought the Tahs should have got the penalty.

Most of those sorts of scrums where the Tahs were in reverse, the back row was disengaging before anything happened with either front row.

Match reinforced to me how Kerevi in great form and must start somewhere in the centres for the wallabies
12 - Beale in average form, Meakes wont get picked. Hunt would be a better defensive option but they both play a very similar game.

Maybe at 6? Isi is looking good to walk right into the 8 jersey.

6 is definitely a big ? at the moment and he'd be on my shortlist. He's played there plenty before. I think one of Dempsey, Hanigan or Tui/SL will get the berth initially, hopefully he gets a run at the RC so we can see where he's at.

The great backline is not firing. Maybe it's time to give others a run. Just because you are a wallaby doesn't mean you should be untouchable.

Why have mason on the bench and never use him??

It's time to bring the size in the pack but hang on the Tahs bought a big lock and I'm guessing it was all for show as Gibson and his light and mobile pack still stands.

Le Roux Roets should have got a run off the bench this week for some size and go forward but not Gibson. I think he was signed as a ruse to say that the Tahs were changing to add go forward and size. He needs a run off the bench next week. I doubt it though. Gibson will push for Wells.

I think his is the most significant issue in Aussie Rugby second only to the coaches who will not stop this merry go round. There is a long list of players from both of these teams who have played for year, many having played for or still playing for the Wallabies and we are unable to get any success or high level performances from them. As per your example; Kepu, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), TPN, Lilo, Kuandri, Speight to name a [very] few. Both teams have opportunity to recruit and have other options within their squads but we keep on propagating mediocrity because we won't move on.
