Sydney Subbies 2019

Mate i'm well aware of what he's been charged with. He's finished as player in Oz.

I was using him as an example of someone who might be free to play.

More interested to see if any shute shield players have slipped into subbies this year.

I know that in the past couple of years Jarred Barry has had the odd run with Balmain, and Joel Brooks came back from the waratahs development squad to have a run with Hunters Hill.

Do you know what he has been charged with? I will be disgusted if any team let him play.

Are they bothering with Gradings meetings? I thought they stopped those last year?

Also: they're understandably reluctant to release draws until everyone competing confirms they're happy with them. Div 5 & 6 don't meet with Subbies until 25th March, so we won't even know the makeup of Divisions until first week of April. Draw might come out by mid-April.

I think the later the better subbies gives clubs to understand numbers and what div they should be in. Contiune to ear up to 4 Div 3 clubs very concerned around meeting 3 grade and 1 colts commitments.

Roooomer Ronaldinho scoring goals and cuddling moles

Div1 club with great fence worried about numbers at pre-season. Hoping that their transient player base arrives out of the local pubs shortly...

New club pushing for admission to a lower div comp. May make regular forum contributor a little frustrated as the new club are planning to be located quite close to his hallowed council tumbleweeds.

Heavyb and Heavyd to duke it out at a div3 game this year at a field with a nice fence and a huge hill. After 7 haymakers and a break for rum, they realise they are long lost best friends and hug it out. After 17 more rums, they start up the pugilism again and Heavyd comes out on top. No punches connect. Fitness wins. Heavyb immediately calls for rematch and takes advice from Shannon Noll

Confirmation via a third party that Dundas will sit out this year and work on 2020 and beyond.

Any word on Kings Old Boys? They did a LOT of Halligan Cup last year and looked primed to return.

Great to see Blacktown pushing themselves.

I remember the days when they and Liverpool were powerhouses in Div 2, great to see them and Blueys pushing up the divisions!

I hope Saints can rebound from this!

Confirmed today by Subbies that Blacktown have replaced St. Ives in Div 3. Good on them.

Geez, Newport are looking at some massive travel this year. At least they will get to have plenty is bus trips!

Isn't that true every year? On the northern beaches they've got a whole bunch of smaller clubs, and 2 Shute Shield clubs. Bit of a punish.

For a club with notorious travel issues it now finds itself in a western Sydney competition.

As long as subbies don't act surprised when Newport forfeit multiple grades when their players drift away on the back of numerous 1.5+hr away games. Already the local league side has picked up a few as appeal of have a northern Sydney comp that doesn’t require ridiculous travel is overwhelming.

That's the lay of the land, though. Who else is up there besides Shute Shield and a bunch of single-grade clubs?

Newport to:
Beecroft = 32km
Blacktown = 51km
Brothers = 24km
HAC = 75km
HV = 70km
Iggies = 33km
ROBs = 41km
Average away trip of nearly 46km would suck, and not all of those are friendly drives in terms of time on a Saturday morning. But all those clubs have to reciprocate.

Compare it to our journeys last year:
Dukes = 50km
Covies = 26km
Maccabi = 42km
Savers = 42km
Menai = 66km
Merrylands = 18km
Convicts = 42km

Average away trip of about 41km. BUT if we have Division 5 with the current finalists, and likely 2-grade clubs, it might turn out to be higher than that

Div 1 and 2 draws on the subbies website: http://rugbyresults.rugby.net.au/competitions.asp?id=666

I am sure there are reasons for it, but looking at BOBs draw in the first half of the season they have 3 games in a row at home. In the second half obviously 3 in a row away. I don't know why it happens but it sure seems strange!

Would all of those clubs have a dedicated home ground? You'd think with 4 teams that is practically guaranteed.

Hi Pfitzy

Yeah all the clubs have dedicated home grounds. When I was lat involved at BOBs there was the rugby field longways and soccer field going sideways on our home ground. Bobs always got first preference on the ground.

Bobs had a similar run last season with a run of home and away games. Not sure what causes it but im sure there are good reasons why it happens. I also notice in the draw like last season you don't play the same clubs in the same order as the first half of the season. It doesn't matter i'm sure its a matter of keeping all clubs as happy as possible.

I don't even know who our opponents are yet ;) though I'm backing Covies and Merrylands as lock-ins.

This wet weather is fucking with our proposed trial/charity day this weekend against Dukes. Given the forecast we should be OK, but Council have not adequately covered the cricket pitch on our eastern halfway tram tracks which is a concern. Might have to get a narrow field going to make it work.

In fairness, they said they've still got some work to do around the edges, and then everything will be rolled and smoothed.

But FFS why not just do that the first time? The soccer field next door looks much better.

Even with a dedicated home ground, we always have to factor in the Food & Wine and Moocooboola Festival's as to our ground availability. So assume the case for other clubs as well. We have 3 of the last 4 games at home which while great for ending the season, does make spreading social events a bit hard.

Also a good point - without even knowing what our draw is, we've got little idea where we are going to slot Old Boys and Ladies Day. Not that we've been able to get much happening there the last couple of years ;)

The Sydney Harlequins Ladies' day is apparently awesome.
