ISA 2019

Based on the information we are getting so far, would it be fair to say this is one of the 'weaker' ISA cohorts? Auggies loss to New, Stannies smashed by Kings, Auggies held scoreless in other trials. With the stronger ISA schools (Auggies, Stannies) being comprehensively beaten by non-ISA schools, where in recent years they have matched the might of the GPS and CAS, I would have to say the ISA rep teams will struggle. Can someone shed some light as to whether this is a weak ISA cohort?

Tah - I agree re Pat's and Pius fighting for 6th place in the ISA. Wouldn't be surprised if Pius get the wood over Pat's. Pat's seriously lacking in attack. No X-factor to help them get over the try line like they have had in recent years. In for a very long season I think. Would be good to see Pius give it a red hot crack (as all reports suggest this is their stronger cohort).

As much as I have given it to Greg's over the past few season, I wouldn't be against them coming out and competing strongly for the title (and making me eat my words).

As I have always said, if Greg’s ever take their rugby program as serious as their league program they would dominate the ISA without a question of a doubt.

Oakhill playing their best game of the season so far vs Scots 2nd XV, a great determined team effort. The forwards laid a great platform for the backs to play some expansive footy! Unfortunately, the boys lost 21-19, would of being a different result if a few of the 50/50 decisions went Oakhill's way! Other results below:

Reasoning for placing Kinross so high?

Just feel as though people are forgetting about Kinross. Had a strong team last year admittedly they are losing key players particularly in their forwards. They could prove to win an upset here or there against some of the stronger teams this year.

Well done Oak_Wood its always interesting to see a full school's results, particularly Oakhill College. As a they serve as a feeder to my Grade Club Eastwood. Please, if possible keep supplying G&G the Oakhill results. Such a pity we can't get more full results from other schools.

Apart from St Gregs, the ISA would also benefit from including two other schools, St Edwards at Gosford they 900 boys and Macellan College at Randwick I think they have 900 boys also. Both have an involvement in Rugby, not just League. Their inclusion into the ISA would certainly add strength to your competition. In fact, the ISA should be the one competition where growth of Rugby should be occurring. Simply, the GPS and CAS Competitions for all their strength and numbers are less likely to expand. On the contrary they are indeed contracting.

The ISA has the potential to become numerically the strongest of all the competitions.

Didn’t take long for the Papa effect to evaporate OR just a glitch in the auggies juggernaut. I’d suggest the latter.

I’m hearing Auggies have a massive injury toll in the 1s and 2s at the moment. Up to 15 boys out with shoulders, knees and concussion Some look likely to be out for an extended time but the majority will start to come back in the next few weeks

That's correct the boys are in bad shape with some of their best talent - Daniel Ala (Aus Schools) and both Bamford boys gone for most or all of the season. But you are right about Papa being sidelined as well, the lack of support for rugby in the school will be evident over the next few years.

...and on a bit of side note - correct me if I'm wrong but this appears to be the most animated the ISA thread has been in some years - perhaps at all! Well done contributors :)

I like your thinking B&W, especially Marcellin Randwick - traditionally a very strong sporting culture at the college. However , I think you’ll find they are wedded to the MCC and have been for many a year. This means one weekday afternoon of sport (probably Thursday) - to move to Saturday sport maybe a bridge too far culturally if you know what I mean.

My understanding is that the previous headmaster and Papa drove the rugby culture at Auggies. It gave the school a co curricular activity that the boys could rally around and excel at - and the ISA became all the better for it. You seem to suggest with these two guys now gone the culture may be changing?

The previous headmaster and Pappa built it from the ground up.
They didn’t have a team in every age group, and played in the local village comp, prior to their arrival.
So it’s hard for replacements to match that commitment.

I’ve heard opinions recently, that the Rugby program went from enhancing the School culture, to becoming a drain on the culture.

The new 1st XV coach is from Oakhill, which is where the new principal is from. You are correct about Tim cleary and Papa, both had exposure to CAS/GPS schools and the knock on effect a successful rugby program can have on the image and branding of the school. It definitely increased the demand with parents considering Auggies on the northern beaches over other north shore schools. IMO It also had a positive effect on school fees, teaching and infrastructure. Obviously, it helped establish a stronger ISA comp as they were a league school before this.

I think its success was misunderstood. There were kids there on scholarships which meant that everyone else was paying for this to happen. Unlike the richer GPS/CAS schools who have perhaps more generous benefactors, it becomes a bigger issue to the bottom line to continue this approach, but it does work from a branding point of view. If RA get there way and get schoolboy 1st XV rugby on Foxtel, this will be seen as a huge opportunity to push schools on national TV. Imagine the level of bursaries and scholarships as a result in rugby schools. These schools are competing on all levels, Auggies have also a great rowing program that has had success against GPS schools even beating shore. There academic results have improved as well in the same period that they had success on the field. Its all economics.
