QLD Colts 2019

Brisbane Boys

Peter Burge (5)
On the plane tomorrow so I thought I would get in early with my picks for the week.
GPS V Sunnybank Polar opposites in terms of what they have to play for after tipping the Bank last week and them getting blotted I expect the boys from the Bank to come out breathing fire and demolish the GPS boys The Bank by 30+

UQ v Brothers defining game of the season for each team. Stylistically similar with mobile packs and points out wide. it will come down to execution. If Brothers play like they did against Souths they will romp it in. If they play like they did against Wests they will get badly spanked. I expect UQ to have too much polish and consistency to secure a top two position. UQ by 5

Wests V Bond both teams should have done better this year however after last weeks loss to Souths I expect Bond to back it up with another. Wests by 20

Easts V Norths Easts will get this done at home. The Norths boys have been plucky all season and you hope that they stick with it next year as they seem to have gotten etter as the year has gone on.Easts by 20

Over to you boys

UQ v Brothers - UQ last home game will be hard to stop, looking forward to the battle of the halves (Brothers-Tarabay/Pappin) (UQ-Christian/Hogan). Brothers halves struggled with the line speed of UQ last game. UQ are still struggling in the back line, if Ralston plays Colts 1 it maybe Brothers only chance of taking the game. UQ +10

West v Bond - last home game for West also, would expect West to put Bond away early. West +15

East v Norths - East to get over the line but I don’t think it would be as easy as most would think, I suspect Norths will see this as a winnable game and come out the gate firing. East +7

My Game of the Round:
GPS v Sunnybank - with SB having key backs/forwards out in combination with the moment GPS have built the past few weeks, I believe GPS have the potential to upset the Dragons. GPS +7

As the magpies had the week off with the bye i thought I would venture out to st lucia to watch 2nd place university take on 3rd place brothers. What an absolute cracking game! Brothers, similarly to the souths game a month or so a go, just had this energy and aggression in defence. I would be the last person to compliment the filth but they truly stepped up today.
Stand outs: Brothers 2,5,12,13 Uni 3,7,8
One of the tries of the year late in the game as well.

That last try was something special. What a pass from the number 5.
38-13 with Brothers botching a few others. Agree with standouts

After last weeks physical battle no surprise both SB & UQ struggled this week - hats off to Brothers, hopefully Suapaia pulled up ok. GPS wow, great to see the Gallopers finish the season strong after a tough 1st round.

Sunnybank v Easts - Sunnybank struggled last week against GPS and looked a tad off pace so I suspect this one to be close but the size of the bank is going to be too much for Easts. Sunnybank +10

Souths v Wests - match of the round. Wests have welcomed back Whiteside coming down from premier grade last week and they looked red hot against Bond. Souths coming off a bye welcome back Henry Smith at 12. Going to be a cracker. Souths 1-13

Norths v Bond - 6th v 9th - pride on the line however. Bond will want to bounce back from a slaughter last week however my guess is that they will stack their colts 2 for the rest of the season. Bond +13

Brothers v GPS - seen 2 very different brothers teams this year. If we see the brothers of last weekend they could put 30 on GPS. However, if GPS play like they did last week and brothers fall off the pace it could be very interesting. Brothers +13.

Sunnybank v Easts the big Sunnybank boys will roll over the Easts boys both teams hit by injuries but the Bank have more to play for. Sunnybank by 20plus

Souths V Wests West’s would have to be very disappointed in the season having beaten everyone in the top four bar Souths with no chance of playing finals they have a punchers chance but realistically Souths by 20.

Norths v Bond. I am going for the upset with Bond having nothing to play for. Norths by 10

Brothers v GPS Brothers by 30 plus.

Enjoy your rugby boys.

Brothers v GPS - Hard not to back the boys in blue, after last weeks valiant effort. Brothers +10

Norths v Bond - Another good match up, however I think Bond get it done with a bit of room to spare. Bond +15

Sunnybank v East - The dragons will bounce back from last weeks scare with a decent win. Sunnybank +15

GOTW:

Souths v West - Souths will need to bring their A Game to win this one. Being the final game for West you can bet your house they will empty the tank. With the inclusion of Whiteside this is a winable game for West. Only time will tell. West +7

Brothers 31-0 over GPS.
One of the toughest contests all year.
GPS showed plenty of grit and fire.
Plenty of push and shove and the tackles were bone crunching.
12 for Brothers was outstanding both in attack and defence. 8 was also a strong performer.
Congrats to GPS on their effort.
Thought 1,4 and 5 were GPS best

Well the last round approaches and $%it is about to get real

Top 4 in Colts one is decided and for mine it is between three teams Souths, Brothers, UQ. Brothers have put together a very impressive second half of the season beating the other two but have blotted there copybook against Wests so it will be hard to pick. I would suggest the closest that he comp has been in four or five years. Sunnybank have had a tough run with injuries this year and are probably just a bit off the pace.

Top 4 in Colts two is yet to be decided with Easts and Brothers playing a winner takes all match on Saturday. Winner finishes 4th loser has an off season. Souths and Bond are clear favorites in this being 4 and 6 games ahead of 3rd placed UQ

Congrats must go to the Souths boys who if the Colts 1 win on the weekend will have the minor premiership in both Colts 1 and 2 which is a very not bad considering where they were at 3 years ago and should give hope to every club that things can turn around very quickly.

Good point! Credit to Souths if they wrap up both minor premierships! If I’m not mistaken they were wooden spooners in 2017 Colts 1? Credit to the coaching staff who have overhauled that program to make it one of the best in Brisbane! The more teams competing each year, the stronger the comp is!

Totally agree Mr Cross - Brothers No. 12 was outstanding!

Didn’t see the game but pretty sure Cross played 8 on the weekend and Creighton played 12 so think that’s a little misguided.

Anyway, huge congrats to Souths with both teams looking likely for the minor premiership considering I’m pretty sure they won a combined two games in 2017.

Xplorer says Cross at 8 and Creighton at 12. How good Is Josh Flook playing atm in both Colts and Prems. Stepping up to the challenge in Prems and making an impact.

Nah definitely not misguided. 2019 and 2018 previous messages from GC give it away as always a plug to the same player 2019 No. 8 (No. 5 in Uni game) and no. 13 colts 2 2018. I feel like Sherlock Holmes! Just having a little fun. Anyway, back to the unbiased rugby chat.....

Last round of the season for most boys well played to those who will not make finals on an entertaining season.

This weeks games.

Brothers v Easts Brothers Easts will make a game of it but Brothers to pull away in the last 20 minutes. Brothers by 20

Souths v Norths. I have been impressed by Norths improvement throughout the season but they are a little overmatched in this game Souths by 30

Bond v Sunnybank I am going for the upset in this one as the boys from the coast are 20 points better at home. Bond by 5

GPS v UQ UQ will be far to strong in what will be an opposed run I expect this to be a real blowout UQ by 50

Game of the week is in Colts two with East and Brothers playing off for 4th spot as with many Colts 2 games this year it will be too close to call.

Good luck boys.

So we are now at the big dance first week of finals.

Colts 1 major final Souths v Brothers. Game of two styles Souths power game v Brothers more mobile and skilful game.
Season finished one game a piece with Brothers flogging Souths in round two. I expect a close game with Brothers bringing very high line speed in defence. If both teams play there best rugby I expect Souths to win. My pick is Souths but it could go either way.

I expect the winner of this game to go on and win the premiership.

Sunnybank v UQ UQ seem to be Sunnybanks kryptonite I understand they have not scored a point against the students this year. Again power v mobility. I think the students will have too much for the injury depleted Sunnybank and win by 14 plus

Colts 2 Souths v Bond both have been heads and shoulders above the pack all year. Bond have a good mobile pack with speed out wide and this is where they will try to win. Souths have a very good pack. I will go for Souths in a close game by 7.

Brother v UQ Brothers just got in by beating Easts on the bell last week and may find it hard to back up. UQ have some good players who would be in most other clubs Colts 1 teams and I expect them to pull away and win by 20.

Good luck boys.
