Ballymore Redevelopment

I like to watch

You’ve got a long way to go yet.
Federal Government approved funds for massive improvements to Brookie oval 5 or 6 elections ago.
Pretty much reaffirmed funding during each election cycle.

Sure, that’s always a risk depending on planning approval and what year it’s budgeted for ...

conversely the fed govt pledged money towards Rugby Australia’s golden throne at Moore Park, and it was built the same election cycle

perhaps its captured in this:

$46.4 million for new and existing capital grants programs to build, upgrade and improve sport and recreation infrastructure to support healthy communities. This funding includes programs designed to boost community use of schools, and to support female participation through new and upgraded female facilities.

Expect another report soon called the “Queensland Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029“ that will offer a direction for funding and programs

For those that are interested, QRU have requested an extension on the previous DA which was due to expire in Aug 2020, they've requested this be extended until 2024.

2. EXTENSION REQUEST
The approved development is a significant development and QRU have made significant efforts to commence development as outlined in Section 3 of this correspondence. However, the remaining currency period is not sufficient to allow the development to be completed and for the first change of use to occur. Accordingly, the applicant requests an extension to the currency period of an additional four years until 10 August, 2024.

3. GROUNDS FOR EXTENSION

QRU is committed to the development of Ballymore and intends to act on the approval as soon as possible. The following summarises the reasons why development has not been able to commence to date and why the requested extension to the currency period is warranted:
  • The proposed development will deliver a new major mixed-use sporting precinct at Ballymore. These facilities will be accessible for use by the local sporting community, spectators and members of the wider public. The development will therefore deliver significant public benefit. An extension to the currency period should therefore be granted to allow the applicant to complete the development and deliver these benefits to the community.
  • The approved development is of a significant scale. Accordingly, a longer currency period is warranted to provide sufficient time for the applicant to complete the project given the complexities associated with commencing and completing a project of this scale.
  • QRU’s ability to commence this development has always been dependent on securing funding from both State and Federal Governments. This has been the primary reason why the development has not been able to commence within the existing currency period. A significant portion of the required funding has recently been secured (May, 2019). QRU have proactively been taking steps to act on this approval since this occurred.
  • The applicant has had preliminary discussions with representatives from Brisbane City Council about changes to the existing approval. This further demonstrates that the applicant has been actively taking steps to act on the approval since funding has been secured.
  • The general planning intent for the site has not changed significantly since the development was originally approved. This was considered as part of the previous extension application. The approved development is still consistent with the broader planning outcomes sought for the site. Therefore, there is no planning benefit in requiring the applicant to lodge a new development application.
The above demonstrates that there are strong grounds to support the proposed extension to the currency period.

Funding commitment from the state govt alleged to be coming next week, 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup been used as extra weight to push the project across the line in the short term, and Brisbane 2032 Olympic bid in the long term.

$30million overall for the project, $15 million from feds, and $15 million from state. Initially RA were to commit $5million as well, which I can’t see occurring now.

If we get the Olympics it would need an upgrade for seating and artificial turf. This upgrade wont have that.
