Ashes 2019

Up the Guts

Steve Williams (59)
From the All Rounders
1. Jason Holder - batting 571, bowling 770
2. Shakib Al Hasan - batting 604, bowling 662
3. Ravindra Jadeja - batting 488, bowling 794
4. Ben Stokes - batting 625, bowling 588
5. Pat Cummins - batting 371, bowling 914

I guess the way the rating system works if you don't really get much of a bowling ranking if you are a part timer and rarely bowl/take wickets.

Cummins is by far the worst batter on that list. The other guys all average over 30. Al Hasan almost average 40.
Those above Cummins are what I would call genuine all-rounders below him are a lot of bowlers who can hold a bat.

That's kind of been the way forever. Have there ever been more than a small handful of genuine all rounders in test cricket at any one time?

Historically the definition of all rounder was having a batting average higher than your bowling average. Those top 4 are probably the only ones currently to achieve that. Having four playing at once is probably more than there usually is!

You’re probably right, although I’d say there may have been a couple more 10-20 years ago with Flintoff, Collingwood, Pollock, Kallis, Vettori, Symonds etc.

I'll take all of those except Collingwood. He was very much a part timer (Joe Root has more test wickets).

Vettori's batting average was lower than his bowling average but the latter part of his career was incredible with the bat.

Flintoff, Pollock and Kallis are the great all rounders of that period and then a little before that you have Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee.

Shane Watson also finished his career with a higher batting average than bowling average which puts him in the genuine all rounder category.

Ah, yes I neglected Watson. Even after he had to slow everything down post injuries he had a golden arm and could get it to go both ways. A good opening bat as well sometimes overshadowed by his struggles in the 90s and his propensity to review everything.

We had a young pup named Waugh, S who would've been our best genuine all rounder since Miller. Damn that dodgy back!

Speaking of Miller, I really enjoyed this article by Malcolm Knox on the Invincibles match in Headingley:

It’s a bit of a read but well worth it.

Jofra and all and sundry (including the blokes who fed the bowling machines) from the World Cup are probably already all lined up to become knights of the realm.

That's a big blow. Smithy's runs are the only thing keeping us in the series at the moment. Marnus obviously comes into the team in his place, but there really should be other changes too -- like Harris for one of the openers. The other blokes need to seriously step up.

I'd also be going with Cummins, Hazlewood and Pattinson with the ball.

Bancroft will be dropped for Harris and Pattinson will come in for Siddle. Still no Starc.

Good team. Bancroft battled hard but never looked comfortable.

England are a better side on paper, but if our bowlers fire we may only need 2-3 good partnerships to win the game.

exactly. I maintain that Ussie will break through soon. He's looked delicious with the bat (and yet still bloody frustrating). Warner MUST come off soon surely?

We need Patto to click

Has Starc don something to Langer. I know that we do have a good line up but Starc does offer a point of difference. Our batting does look a bit thin without one S. Smith in there.

He just needed one half-decent start in four innings. A mildly attractive 25 would have bought him at least one more test.

Not a bad lineup. Warner must be on a warning to pull his socks up surely, he's seen Smith get two 100's and a 92 while he's been back in the sheds.

Maybe someone show him a video of him carving up the Saffa's in Adelaide?

There had to be changes with the top order, so I'm OK Harris coming in. We need for the top three to get us to 1/50 - 2/100 or so, to give the middle order a chance to build some sort of decent total.

Patto in for Siddle makes sense too. That's a pretty potent attack in the pace department. They also need to cash in when we've got the Poms 4/80 or 5 or 6 for 130 like we've done in the last couple of tests. We do all the hard work and then don't finish them off. Some better catching in this test will help too.

Gossamer-thin.
England by plenty.
