Rugby 7s general chat

Going to get my rant in early. Again, the 7s will only be shown on Kayo (well Saturday’s play).

Once again, ignoring those that pay twice the amount of Kayo subscribers. It’s ridiculous and a clear indication of what is wrong with some things in our game. Why can’t it be played on both platforms?

If you've got a VPN you can generally watch it through the World Rugby 7s website.

I agree though that it sucks as a Foxtel subscriber but not a Kayo subscriber. They need to rectify this.

I will tone down my rant a little here, and I jumped the gun a little. Looking at Saturday’s sport content, every channel is taken up by preferred live content, stuff you can’t argue against. F1, Cricket World Cup, AFL, NRL and Super Rugby. Just a little early to judge because of the recent tournaments not been played.

NZR are giving 7's access to anyone who wants to go to Tokyo....... but can only pick one player from each Super Rugby team.

Pace out wide = Rieko (Blues) & Reece (Crusaders)
Pivot/ first receiver = DMac (Chiefs)
Grunt = Ardie ('canes) & maybe Frizzell (Clan)

Not saying I'd take them all but they're the guys I'd be talking to first.

Mo Longbottom is 1.72m apparently and looks tiny.

This guy 7cm shorter. Height isn't everything but that's pretty damn small. Might snag us a few head high tackle penalties and likely yellow cards

Bloody hell, he's 5'5". Surely he'd be the smallest player going around in Aus rugby. No wonder his quads looks big, they'd be half his mass.

I can see Aus taking a similar route. I have heard rumors about their interest in getting Daugunu in from the Reds and ino as a fact they were at least interested in getting Cam Clark back over

One per team rule I’d go

Daugunu (Reds)
Clark (Tahs) - good kicker as well which is desperately needed
Cusack (Brums) - already signed dual contract
Goddard (Rebels) - desperately need a play maker
Or RHP (Rebels) - big guy with very good skills and he is very quick for a big man

And I’d throw in an out of the box pick with asking Sean McMahon if he’d be interested.

From the Rebels I'd throw in Leota. He'd be a menace.

I know for sure they've been offering speedsters deals. Will Eadie from Queensland got offered a contract but is staying in 15's

He is one of the fastest men in Australia, gotta be at least happy about that. He will fill a niche role based on a niche talent.

The kid has speed for sure but how much will he lose reshaping his fitness to rugby. Plenty of blokes in the gym look good but can't handle the fitness required for 7s. Will he be a liability in defence. No problem getting to a player but useless if he can't tackle. Heard he had league contracts at some stage. Anyone know if they dropped him or the other way around.
Baker has figured out to use his height to offload just as much as his pace.
An interesting thing will be how his body deals with being bashed v pampered.

yeah... I think someone who can run 10.1second over 100m is more than just looking good in the gym.

Yes his fitness will need to shift, even with increased focused on hi anaerobic fitness he will be faster than any other player in Australian rugby.

He mentioned that he intends to keep up his speed work alongside his 7s training. Very similar to what Isles does. in fact, parts of his training regime has been incorporated into the wider regime of the USA 7s squad.

Good to see us get to a Cup final in London. Managed to watch a bit - Longbottom is much improved, and Miller looks a quality find.

It seemed we played dual playmakers. Looks like Walsh is moving away from Friends tactic of trying to dominate the breakdown and move towards pace.

They've gone with:

Caleb Clarke (Blues, Auckland), Etene Nanai-Seturo (Chiefs, Counties Manukau), Salesi Rayasi (Hurricanes, Auckland) and Scott Gregory (Highlanders, Northland)

All have previously been part of AB7's.

Interesting that all are midfield or outside backs, they must be looking elsewhere for the grunt they've appeared to lack in recent times.

I know the Aussie selectors have got their eyes on a few wallabies who didn't make the RWC squad to help through Olympic qualifying this year. Will be interesting if they get their way or are blocked by Scotty Johnson
