Come on, it was a huge mistake. There's high risk/high reward plays and then there's this play. The risk was extreme and the potential upside was minimal. Even if it had gone wonderfully well we probably break out to the 22. The odds of Fiji scoring were so many times higher than us scoring.
I feel like Pocock momentarily forgot the laws. We had advantage and then the ball goes out of play so the option is scrum or lineout but as soon as you throw that lineout, play has restarted and there's no option to come back and say advantage wasn't over. I can only think that when Pocock first threw the ball he thought we would still have advantage.

A story about nothing. If the media reporting this week is anything to go by, we're in for a long world cup.
Clearly there's a lot of pressure being put on the match officials from media on all sides of the globe. Why do i get the feeling this is all going to result in some major controversial call that will cost a player or team their tournament.

haven't seen a replay but from memory we had at least a 2 man overlap, maybe 3 with Koro on the wing
Good win. We knew Fiji would come out firing, and we knew if we hung tough we'd come away in the last 20-30.
Our tactics in the first 25 minutes were bizarre, but I'll put that down to early tournament nerves and over-enthusiasm. Once they settled down it was really one-way traffic.
I'd caution against making changes for the Wales game. The guys on the bench had a far easier job than the starters, which was why LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto), Genia, To'omua, Uelese etc. looked so good.
I'd also keep Pocock starting. The game pattern didn't suit him, we were either getting steamrolled (first 30) or holding the ball ourselves. In a tighter struggle against Wales I expect him to make a far bigger contribution than what he did.
You can't win the Cup in the first game but you sure can lose it. We did everything we needed to do, so I'm pretty happy. Even if I was about to have a heart attack at the 45 minute mark.

I'd consider starting To'omua, Lilo has been very ordinary, and even a liability since the Perth Test. I'm not sure his body can take the hits.
I'd also look at DHP for Beale for obvious reasons.

Maybe so, but he's played two games since the Perth test. One against the ABs at Eden Park, the other against a fired-up Fiji where we made a heap of errors (of which only one or two were his fault).
I agree he hasn't been great, but I'm not ready to drop him yet. And we've tried To'omua at 10 a bunch and it has never really worked.

I agree, we need to resist the urge to select players based on their performance off the bench. Most players will look good coming off the bench against Fiji when they are tired. This is the reason Beale is now playing FB, because he had a great cameo off the bench, and probably that is the position he is best suited and should stay.
DHP should be fullback. Judging by the first week this is going to be known as the tournament of the box kick.
