Crap reffing etc etc yes. Not why AUS lost though.

But you cannot come to a World Cup and not know 100% for sure who your best 10 is.

That is 100% on Cheika

Too much bluster and bravado and too little planning.

The BEST thing he can do now is to tell To'omua that the job is now his for the remainder of the tournament and boost his confidence.

Lilo on the bench.

Woulda coulda shoulda but if To'omua had started that game you woul dnot have been behind by as much.

Oh

And

Second half Australia put bodies into the breakdown and guess what happened. No turnovers, more front foot ball, Tipuric less of a factor.

Has Cheika NEVER analysed Wales to see how the play at the collision.

It boggles the mind. Wales game plan is 1000% obvious and I don't know who the Wallabies thought they were playing.

After Fiji's loss to Uruguay I just don't see it (them beating Wales). Likewise I'm not sure that Argentina have it in them - England look too good to me. France if they play like they did in that first half of the Argentina game maybe. They are an odd team with some real brilliance at times but again I'm unsure of a 80mins performance from them. At the very least I'm hoping England come out of it very battered and bruised.

No matter what, I now have a number of teams I will be cheering on over the next couple of weeks.

On the other hand I bet you didn't see Uruguay beating Fiji, or Japan beating Ireland. Fiji are going to run Wales around the park and they will knock up. A lot will depend on how they approach that game - they have to play Fiji on the Wednesday and then Uruguay on the Sunday, and then it's a week into the finals. However, I do agree that the biggest chance of an upset of those games is the Frogs knocking off the poms.

Like you it certainly makes it more interesting from a supporters point of view than being (virtually) assured top spot in the pool!

Fair point. I wonder if Peceli Yato will be back for the Wales game.. or even the Georgia game this Thur. They didn't have all their usual starters against Uruguay so maybe there is more hope than I give them credit for. Going to be an interesting fortnight or so.

The Poms have two tough games to go, we have two relatively easier ones in the pipeline before we play them. They will, hopefully, be a bit the worse for wear when (and if, of course) we play them.

Yato has a history of concussions from what I've read. They will be targeting the Wales game so won't be surprised if they sit him out v Georgia to make sure they go into the Wales game at full strength.

or maybe they will be battle hardened?

I doubt even Dave Rennie can make our 10 stocks any better.

Hopefully something comes of the Lolesio or one of these other youngsters.

True about the youngsters, but I fear they are all at least another two or three years away from Wallaby selection. In the Vikings game v Fiji on the weekend, Bayley Keunzle filled the 10 spot for the first time, and the team looked the better for it. He looks to have better management of the backline plays, is more than capable of taking the ball to the line and breaking it when needed and is strong in defense. I think he might well be the longer term solution for the Brumbies at 10. In the meantime, perhaps Irae Simone could get a run. He is one of the more creative players in the country atm; had a very strong year at 12 in Super this year; and has played a bit of 10 in the past (I think at Norths). He has the skills and could fill the job until someone like Harrison, Deegan, Lucas or Keunzle steps up.

Interesting you comment on Kuenzle's running game. I saw him at schoolboy level and he was a very good distributor but ran himself rarely (in contrast to To'omua, Foley, and Beale). Glad to hear he's got the confidence to have a go himself at higher levels. Maybe a discussion for another thread though.

Yeah and we haven't beaten them since then. Remember when they played us at home and beat us 3-0.
If I remember correctly we scored the same or more tries in at least 2 of those games and once again lost the penalties and referee management.
Like in the Welsh game we have the ability - just need to work on temperament and game management.

What about To'omua who will still be around at the Rebels post RWC? Do you see him still playing 10 for the Wallabies or do we move on?

With them having Deegan joining up I'll be curious to see how much he'll end up playing at 10. It really feels like a lot of the Super Clubs could have done more to develop the 10 stocks for this post RWC exodu. We've got some great potential that seems really green. I know the Tahs have been poor on this front. I wonder if Jack Debreczeni will ever re-appear in Australia. He looked really good at the Chiefs after how underwhelming he was at the Rebels.

Or the overall game plan, Wales replicated what England did to us but we keep trying the same game plan over and over again and unfortunately the result is the same over and over again.

To'omua probably at 12 when Kerevi leaves. Between him and JOC (James O'Connor) I think.

You underestimate our game plan strategy at your own risk. We use the "Princess Bride" Battle of Wits tactics to outwit our enemy.
They think we will change our game plan but by not changing our game plan we confuse them into using the wrong game plan.

How long do you think before Australia ditches the Giteau rule and goes down the same path as South Africa? I'm betting that it will happen before the next WC.

I think it is a real balancing act of not destroying the local game. Already the value proposition of the o/s comps is pulling more players earlier and earlier in their careers, you remove the Giteau Rule i'm unsure what will keep some of them around, particularly if they don't make the Wallabies as quickly as they like. I know there has been some discussion of around a Giteau Rule for Wallabies except for RWC where everyone is considered. Even this I wonder how much it will change player decisions on plying their trade localling or aboard if they still feel they can play in a RWC.

I think this time round there weren't many players who would have been considered who didn't make it because of the Giteau Rule.. Skelton maybe.

Finally got to watch the game this afternoon. I’d only seen the last 30 minutes prior to this.

Although I understand the disappointment several good things have been on display IMO, which gives me some level of hope going forward. We clearly won’t be favourite for any of our finals (assuming we get through) and our lack of consistency suggests getting through the quarters will be a bonus, and through the semis something of a miracle, but there are some definite positives -

- Latu is producing career best form at 2, and it adds a significant dimension to our game. I feel for Fainga’a - but IMO he just isn’t capable of playing to the level Latu has to date. If he keeps it going we are much more potent.
- our tight 5 has been very strong. Wales demonstrated that winning rugby is no longer simply a matter of winning up front (and it hasn’t been for some time) but it sure as hell helps and our tight 5 are in the best shape they’ve been for about 19 years
- our bench is doing their bit. Genia/White, To'omua, LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) In particular have been strong off the bench. (I’m not convinced though that To'omua or White should start as a result).
- DHPs performance is very important because of his ability under the high ball. JOC (James O'Connor) likewise because of his ability to create opportunities around him

IMO we are still a chance, but three things need to happen -
- our starting 10, whoever it is, has to perform near the top of his capabilities. Neither Lealiifano nor Foley are killing it, but we need
one of them to step up
- Kerevi needs to improve his ball security/options. For us to win big games, we need every one of his run metres but he can’t keep ending half of them with handing the ball back
- Petaia needs to debut and live up to the hype. This would be enormous for us as it is a position where we are a bit below par

I can’t honestly say I am confident that even one of those 3 things will happen but I’m prepared to stay hopeful.
