Refereeing decisions

Tall lads are being unfairly targeted by the refs and frankly it's disgusting. Lavanini, S. Barrett, Salakai Loto, Coleman.

But seriously, these fellas have to get lower, it sucks for them, but they gotta.

But how low can they go?
Tall bloke tackling short bloke who is going down to avoid the tackle makes the contact point distance off the ground about 1 meter. Even lower if it is a pick-and-drive. Even if tall bloke drops his own body height he still is at risk of making a high shot.
Tall bloke trying to wrap his arms around ball carrier looks like a swinging arm.
I'm sure some gamesmanship is evident too - ball carriers are feigning injury when hit "high".
Simple solution - if the tackler is seen to be aiming at the head, penalise.
If the tackler is seen to be aiming at the ball carrier's normal chest height, or waist, or legs then no penalty.

We need to avoid the AFL situation where the strict "no head-high contact" rule has lead to certain players shrugging tackles so that contact is made and free kicks are given. Think of the incentives that are now in play, where an errant high tackle can lead to a yellow card advantage for one team.

Interesting listening to a podcast I think Eggchasers discussing Duane Vermeulen being dropped on his head on the weekend. He was feigning injury, playing knocked out on the ground for 10 seconds and they said in that case he has to go. Either he is actually knocked out and can't play, or he's faking so he needs to be sent off the field. I like that approach.

Curious of peoples thoughts on this one;

. . . it's become a bit of a theme to have a jab at the AB's in this area. I seem to even recall seeing some stats that seemed to show the amount of penalties/cards the AB's were receiving compared to other teams indicating some trends that there may be some bias occurring.

Typical outrage mongering from Kiwi scribes. Worth noting that the article is just a reprint of quotes without any effort to refute the "extraordinary attack"

If they are going in standing up go for a ball and all wrap tackle. If using the shoulder then they have to get low.

I think that is an absolutely terrible idea. The guy was just speared into the ground and most normal people don't suddenly jump up as the first thing that goes through your mind is "fuck, can I move my toes". When a scrum collapses, we tell the kids not to move, so why the hell is Duane not moving fearing that he could do more damage an issue?

Absolute horseshit.

I think they are suggesting that if the tackle is serious enough to put him down for that long, he should be taken off as a precaution.

If it's that bad, he needs to go for a HIA surely?

If I was a rugby journo I'd be taking potshots at the All Blacks as often as possible. Guaranteed views on your article

Hard to know who is the bigger embarrassment to Australia Kevin or his son Brett. Surely now that Rugby is in the Olympics they can find themselves a competent CEO rather than a connected CEO.

So was this one worthy of a Red Card? Maybe I'm becoming jaded, but part of me does wonder at the outcome if a Fiji player had done that to say Alun Wyn Jones.

^ I'd want to see a video to be 100% sure but based on just that still it looks like Red all day long & the "mitigation" that he lands on his back not his head or neck looks improbable.

Actually WOB he did land on back, and very clearly, another foot or so he would of actually almost landed on his feet!!Just absolute plain lucky that he was flipping over so quick. That really shows what I say about photos show nothing in these situations.
