Sydney Subbies 2020

Menai played Halligan Cup in 2019 every round I think. Maybe missed 1.

Subbies have told them to join a formal comp if they want to play in 2020.

I'm always skeptical about subbies ordering clubs to do things.

They have no idea whats going on within those clubs.

Agreed. However it also true that they sometimes ask those clubs and get a completely misleading answer

don't exactly blame menai for not wanting to commit to a weekly comp

I know some of the guys that have played for them. Flaky AF best to keep them where they are for the time being until they build a club and get juniors starting to filter through

They won every Division they ever entered.
They won 2 trophies in the year where the north-south Divisions had a playoff.
They won a club Championship for a 2-Grade competition with only 1 Grade.

Victory isn't everything, as it turns out.

I can see from Facebook and Instagrams subbies pre-seasons are slowly kicking off around the place.

St Pats have a video up on Facebook advertising free subs in 2020!? Anyone have any idea what’s going on there, seems like an odd move to me. Would certainly take a fair chunk out of their revenue. Wonder what their objective is? Div 1 return??

Anyone have any idea where Balmain will end up?

Are Redfield Old Boys moving up to div 2? Can Barker stay in div 2 with only 3 grades?

Maybe they received a bit of grant money or a new sponsor? Dunno, but with 5 teams you're looking down the barrel of $18K to just get everyone on the field. Lot of moolah without the other stuff thrown in.

We did zero rego one year after picking up a grant that covered our needs. It didn't improve recruitment or retention as a 1-team club, because we were still getting pummelled on the park.

Their FB has been active, but the big question is where do they WANT to end up? Subbies have promised they aren't going to piss around with grading clubs this time around, and would rather err on the side of caution than stuff up clubs and competitions.

It definitely won't be First Division, and a lot will hinge on fielding Colts as to where they end up. Could be 4th Div if they don't have U21 numbers. But 4th Div will be a farking mess again unless a few teams can front up with confidence.

I don't think Redfield would like that, TBH, and seek an exemption. Newport maybe?

The real issue IMHO: 5 Grade is ridiculous, and not everyone in First Div can do that + Colts, while some clubs are doing 6-7 Grades + 1-3 Colts. There are smaller clubs struggling to stay afloat and big clubs struggling to get games.

Am I correct in saying that Merrylands were the only team 2 team club last year? Everyone else was either div 5 or 6 with 1 or div 4 with the full 3?

From memory:
  • Convicts had 2 the whole year.
  • Kings OB ran Halligan Cup 13 weeks of 14, and 8 of those weeks played 2 grades.
  • Merrylands stopped entirely as of Round 12 and forfeited 6 of 14 Second grade games overall.
  • Mac Uni were backing up a LOT of guys so basically had 2 Grades.
  • Northern Saints played 2 Grades most weeks and got a handful of home games with 3.
  • Balmain got down to 2 at the end :)
  • Raptors had enough for 2 without doubt.
Burraneer, Convicts, Raptors, Maccabi, and Wakehurst look like the clubs interested in 2nd Grade from what I've seen. Others might join them, and the Renegades hope to be there.
