Sydney Subbies 2020

These divisions aren't set in stone are they?

No. But Balmain disappeared entirely from the club lists after Forest were officially promoted last year. So this is the only progress I've seen as to their future and have to assume they've given this assurance.

Now the questions are:

DIVISION 3:
Who goes up from Div 3?
Will Brothers stay in Div 3 given their 2019 season?

DIVISION 4:
At least 1 team has to go up - only Briars have Colts at present.
If Brothers drop down here, who else goes up? Quins? Berries?
Merrylands won't be here either, so someone else needs to come up.

DIVISIONS 5 & 6:
Can your hero, Div 5/6 Delegate Pfitzy, get 8 clubs into a 2-grade comp?
Anyone new? Anyone dropping? Where Menai at? KOBS?

As preseasons kick off, everyone will know more.

Re Brothers in Div 3. From what I can tell, the club seems to be again waiting on some instruction/guidance from subbies on where they should play. The club should have been relegated last year, however were convinced by subbies to stay (Mind you, a few of the old timers on the board that don't have to cop the beatings don't mind at all). The same old excuses get trotted out, travel, what about colts etc.

I thought until the last few days it was a guarantee that we were going down, however it seems as though the same old story is playing out.

I can absolutely guarantee, without a shadow of a doubt, if the club isn't relegated, they may as well not bother because the boys won't play.

Hopefully common sense prevails and we end up in a 2 team div 5/6 comp. (Or div 4 and just forfeit the 3s). The club has 2 teams worth of players maximum. We cannot be allowed to participate in a 4 team compeition yet again.

On the subject of preseasons, I ended up joining forest for a multitude of reasons It'll be good to start this game Ive watched for my entire life without an opportunity to play it until now.

As I understand it, Forest got moved up to Div one (this wasnt a factor in my decision beyond the fact it ensured they'd have a colts side), is this correct?

Correct - they were promoted based on them winning the Club Championship (most points accumulated across the grades, in effect), and replaced Balmain.

Colts sides will be anywhere in the top 3 Divisions, and a couple of clubs outside that.

I know that Bobs had a team last year and they plan to continue that in 2020. In fact to reflect that they have updated the clubs name to Old Barker Rugby Club.

Nice. Hoping we can have Saturday fixtures for the womens in around the men's game, in addition to the regular gala days

Hearing good things about numbers at touch footy and "working bees" HeavyD..

Things looking very promising by all reports.

Your better connected than me. I know there is 30 blokes heading south this weekend to help out BlazeAid so they appear well organised and motivated.

Redfield now appearing in Division 2. So that is 8 clubs. Can I assume they're getting an exemption for 4th Grade like Barker?

Division 3 with 7 clubs right now. Probably 6 in fact, if the talk about Brothers is true.
https://www.rugby.net.au/page/Division-Three-x-695-132-596.html

Division 4 has 9 clubs, but at least one has to go up to replace ROBs - I'm tipping Briars - and a second for Brothers... Berries? Quins? Depends on Colts I guess.

Division 4 will - once again - be a fucking wasteland as a lot of the teams left struggled for 3 Grades every week. My guess is it reverts to a 3rds-optional competition and they try to push for 8 clubs. Which would suck, as it leaves a 5th Division somewhat stranded.

Can confirm Brothers has made a submission to Subbies asking to be relegated to Division 4.

If they don't let it happen, may as well shut the doors. The club wouldn't survive another div 3 season, we've got 2 teams on a good day.

Confirming Brothers are in 4 and Briars have moved up to 3.

Merrylands have temporarily disappeared.

Div 3 has 7 clubs right now, with Harlequins to be the 8th once Colts can be worked out.

This leaves Div 4 with 7 Clubs. My mail is that only 2 of those clubs - Balmain and Canterbury - will field 3 senior grades.

Think we might need to get as many clubs with 2 + Colts into 4th division

Why are you guys obsessed with colts. When I played as an U21 in the early 80s we were with the men and no-one cared. For christ sakes my school used to have an annual 1st-3rds game contest against the old boys.

Yep. Brothers are in 4th Division which I believe is going to be a 2 grade comp.

Most weeks in Div 3 Brothers had about 2.5 senior grades plus colts.

This might become problematic as we intend to mix our colts aged players in with the seniors giving us most likely 3 senior grades. Meaning the guys in 3rd grade may miss out on a game most weeks if we can't organise Halligans when we come up against a club without a 3rd grade.

Whilst it might be easier to get the numbers together I'm concerned about guys leaving the club as they won't be getting much rugby and the younger, Colts aged players, won't be attracted to the club. As the old boys club for St Pius, where our colts come from, this is a real concern.

What the vocal minority in the club fail to realise is that going to a 2 team comp, as they wanted, is a double edged sword and not necessarily in the best interest of the club or, more importantly, the players.

The biggest issue we've had in the past couple of years is, because of lack of numbers, the skill deferential across the club. Guys who should be playing 4th grade have had to, and wanted to, play 2nd grade. But are disheartened about being beaten every week. We've also tried to fill out a 3rd grade side but have been just short and fell into trap of having players double up. Without a Colts side we should be able to select sides across our grades that are more competitive and have players in grades that suit their skill level.

Because, unless you start a Colts side, you'll never be allowed into the higher divisions.

I'm not against U21 players going up against older men - we've fielded a few 17yo guys in first grade.

But at the same time, not everyone is necessarily mature enough for that, particularly if they're coming back from a schools comp that is only 8 games a year and a variety of match ups

It's a good point. I guess for 4th division it becomes a matter of getting as many younger players involved to help stabilise those clubs. A gentleman's agreement on playing a "nearly-colts" in third grade might be the go where numbers can't be entirely met
