I remember hoping he would succeed, like you always do with a player in the team you support... but it was clear he was thrown in to early, didn’t have the necessary coaching support and his potential wasn’t as high as others so was always going to struggle.
In a different environment, if he had of played club rugby for a couple of years and worked on key aspects of his game he might have been a reasonable fly-half at Super Rugby level, he seems to be going better in France these days.

They try and leave as soon as possible to allow time to get over jet lag, they flew out Sunday, I imagine it was from Sydney, more flights and saves time.

Lions, like most of SA teams, have been pillaged and not looking strong in terms of known names. Of course the playing numbers in SA are so huge the right coaching package could continue to bring up players and maintain standards. Hard to tell.
New HC, Ivan van Rooyan, was placed in October. He is a long term Lions coach starting in age groups, the fitness and conditioning, and assistant recently to de Bruin.
They looked flat in Argentina to me, in spite van Rooyan's background in conditioning. Coming back to the hi Veldt they should not have the usual altitude fitness advantage given that Reds are hopefully nearly there.
They are relying mostly on youngsters from Currie Cup and old heads returning from Europe. And of course Jantjies. Starting front row looks good, second row to be proven and a lighter than usual for South Africa back row.
The SA conference tipping has mostly been 1. Jaguares, 2. Stormers, 3. Sharks, 4. Lions, 5. Bulls in trouble.
If the Reds are targeting a win in the first three games this could be it.

What am I missing that I thought Lucas had a more than adequate game, especially given it was his first hit out at flyhalf? New backline combinations, stinking hot night.
The knock on him not having a long kicking game is fair enough. But I think there's more than enough there to suggest he'll be a quality long term 10.

Why isnt anyone talking about the terrible tactics/strategy and defensive effort in the second half against the Brumbies on Friday night. The reds up by ten at half time had a opportunity to steal a win against the odds and start the season in which everyone has written them off for the first 3 games with an amazing morale boosting win. But only managed to completely lose the plot in defense to get smashed in the second 40. What happened to Thorns amazing ability to coach a defensive style of play which he has been renowned for? Taking nothing away from the Brumbies efforts who deserved the win but jezz that second half was Grahame like in its execution. If we can't take advantage of situations like that and make the most of our opportunities then we are going nowhere for yet another season.

Hoppers stats were superior to Wright's in terms of turnovers, tackles made and meters gained, but as Bobby points out, his eyes are a bit beady. I suppose the Tahs were only playing against the Saders so perhaps shouldn't read too much into that

Agree that the second half was frustrating, particularly the 10 minutes straight after half time . In front by 10 points and in a position to mount genuine pressure , but played like we were chasing points.
Not sure though that the pushed passes and sloppy turnovers were the direction or fault of the coach . Maybe more the exuberance of youth .
They need to learn when to pull the trigger on all out attack and when to grind a team into submission with sustained pressure. The second half against the Brumbies was a time that hopefully they learn from. They fed off our turnovers, would have liked it to be the other way round .

I know this seems like a basic observation, but I think we lost the game when we subbed the props. The boys handled themselves at the scrum but just couldn’t keep up with the pace, and impact at the ruck. The shift from the starting props was sublime. Rodda added plenty.
Obviously pushed passes and offloads are incredibly frustrating, but you only learn in the saddle. Those passes would come off in lower levels of footy. Only one place to sand off the edges.

I agree, I think it really hurt us losing Ruan and Sef Fa'agase before. Not to mention James Slipper, Kirwan Sanday, and Sam Talakai; if we had any two of those we'd have been much stronger in the scrum. But I see the value in developing Feao Fotuaika and Dane Zander they looked solid in the scrum and look like they could be dominant players.

All those blokes are serviceable but aside from Slipper, who is Wallaby standard, I don't think you would see much more output from them than the guys currently in the squad, just give them another week or two.
Also if the Reds wanted a few of them back I think they could have made a play - Sanday is Brisbane based without a contract at the moment and I believe Fa'agase and Talakai are playing second tier Japanese rugby. All very approachable.

They are clearly trying to build a team for the next 2-5 years developing young talent and promoting from within.
I think those guys would make a massive contribution and help us win now, but I do see the value of playing the young guys (at least Zander), would be excellent when Hoopert is back.
