Sydney Subbies 2020

Because, unless you start a Colts side, you'll never be allowed into the higher divisions.

I'm not against U21 players going up against older men - we've fielded a few 17yo guys in first grade.

But at the same time, not everyone is necessarily mature enough for that, particularly if they're coming back from a schools comp that is only 8 games a year and a variety of match ups

Agreed. It's mainly about confidence for these young guys. For the majority of them they've only ever played against other school boys. To suddenly be playing against older, bigger guys is a big step up for them. Once they get their confidence up they're good to go.

Selection would be based upon skill level but I think that the U21's would be more suited to a spot in 2nd grade.

I also agree with that - in fact I've got a few Colts-eligible players who don't want to play anything but first team rugby now. In Thirds you can run up against old blokes* who know they can't hack the fitness any more but will gladly scrum men half their age into the deck.

I’ve just read the annual report. Interesting that they blame clubs for not being honest with subbies about numbers. Historically subbies were not interested in clubs telling them they were short of players. Subbies told us one year that it was to early to panic and when we went into the comp and forefeited 4ths early on were told none our sides would be eligible for semis if we didn’t field a 4ths.

I don't think it is as clear-cut as a blame game. Definitely Subbies have got it wrong in the past.

There have been several clubs who were edge cases - we've been guilty of it - and nominated for a division higher than was realistic.

With the top 3 Divisions now settled, the horse trading begins for who stays in Division 4, what kind of opposition there will be, and how many Grades will be regular. Balmain may have fallen just to discover they are still 2 grades.

It's hard to plan for commitment, or lack of. We've had 90 registered seniors and still found it tough to get 45 guys to turn up on a Saturday. There's too many options for guys these days and if something better turns up they're off.

I'd like to see Div 4 still have 3 grades with 3rd grade optional. It just means clubs need to be honest with each other, and Subbies, early (Tuesday) if they're going to have a team or not.

Any reports from clubs on how preseason is going? Rain has obviously played some havoc early but this week should see players emerge from their summer slumber to start fitness. Will be very interested to see HAC and HV numbers as both clubs rosters fell away badly towards back end of last year. Hopefully they’ll be right.

Apparently Newport going from strength to strength.. Heard a rumour that Newport were approached about playing division 2 and knocked it back? Same bloke said Forest are actually struggling for numbers at training (relative to being in Div 1) and that bunch of blokes have retired post that miraculous 1st Grade miracle premiership. However, also get the feeling this source will do anything to shitcan Forest...

Apparently we had 20 last week which pleasantly surprises me if true.

Rain is a bastard. Haven't been on for 2 weeks but should be good to go tonight.

At this stage, Div 1, 2, and 3 are basically settled. Don't expect anything to change there.

Div 4 is 7 from 8 so far, with the last to be determined shortly. The way things are looking, it'll be a 2-Grade comp.

Still want Div 5 to be a 2-Grade comp, even if it turns out to be 6 out of 8 clubs fielding 2 Grades.

None of the 8 playing Meldrum Cup will be thrilled with 35-minute halves handed down by the CCR last year.

Yeah, it's been a slow start due to the rain butt Feb is always a bit light on.

I'm hoping Div 4 can get to being a 3 team comp but not sure how many clubs have those numbers. Any idea?

I've spoken to a couple of them and the general feeling is 2 teams with 3s / Colts optional. Of the ones listed in Division Four right now (excluding Quins who have gone up) I wouldn't back many to get Thirds on the park with any regularity.

The problem then becomes not enough 2-Grade clubs to make a Fifth Division, so that old wheel spins around again.

I'd rather have Div 4 and Div 5 both be 6 clubs who can field 2 Grades, and leave Div 6 as a melting pot.

We shall see at the Board meeting.

February and so full of hope... remember 6 months ago when we couldn't field 2nds at Beecroft. Baby steps

Womens AGM called for exact same timeslot as Subbies Board meeting. With less than 4 days' notice.
