Super Rugby Round 4: Rebels v Shorks, Ballarat

Just to compound the error of Mpimpe's short try, in the lead up a tackle occurred about 5m out with a Rebels player over the ball, on his feet. Sharks No 7 in from the side, and I mean 90 degrees to the side to clean out the Rebel. No penalty. Very next tackle/ruck, two Sharks players immediately off their feet to seal off the ball. No penalty. Try scored about 30cm short a couple of rucks later.

The later 90m try was also from an illegal strip after Cottrill had a knee on the ground.

An atrocious display by the ref and an atrocious decision to award the game to a Saffa ref.

Nah, there's no blaming the ref for the Rebels abject incompetence. Two men down so you go scrum? kick the ball out on the full - twice. Relieving pressure by tackling someone without the ball?

What I don't get is how Wessels - who did an awesome job out west and has been whispered about as a future Wallaby coach - can't beat the idiot out of some of these guys.

Yeah let's go on chastising the ref for the shit he got wrong, but the Rebs could have had that game bar about 5 neurological aberrations, which is 5 too many for professional rugby.

Sorry(notsorry) but we've got massive systemic issues with the way we develop players, and the ref isn't going to help us execute a simple left-to-right pass for a bonus point on the buzzer, Tom English.

You get a South African ref and a South African team you know you are going to get bent over.

I loved the clean out on Koroibete, it was so obvious even a blind man would of blown it up

Players have a right, or at least an excuse in the heat of a game, to make errors. Referees and Video officials have no excuse. They are paid to get it right and have the benefit of tv coverage to review their decisions. A less than competent exhibition by a ref or other official can have a lot more bearing on the outcome than a less than competent showing by a player.

What's the difference? it's all about performing under pressure. Of course refs will make errors.

To be fair it was the whole officiating team. The TMO was poor not to call that pass forward or to highlight that the ball had probably gone forward off the Sharks in the proceeding lineout anyway.

I don't think the ref had a total shocker, he communicated well, pinged the Sharks for the dangerous tackle and repeat offsides near the line. I think he was a little lax with the offsides in general play and the ruck with some flopping and sealing off going on and he gave Nohamba a lot of leeway at the back of the scrum. There were a couple of flat to arguably forward passes but many of them were flat enough to let pass and the Rebels had a few of their own. His try scored call for Mpimpe short of the line I disagreed with and I suspect if he hadn't said try the TMO might have overturned because it sure looked short.

So do players.

I agree that the TMO needs to be better, but the protocols are there to help back up the onfield team. If the ref says "onfield decision try" then that is the weight of the decision.

But at the same time the players make mistakes because they are desperate because they are behind in the game off the back of some terrible calls.

I agree there is so much we need to be doing better but at the same time just because the Rebels made mistakes it shouldn’t absolve the ref from their errors

But then when you see the ball is clearly short you say no try.

Rebels don’t have this as an excuse - sharks were the better side - too many errors and overall backs for rebels failed to make impact

Still too many basic errors from Rebels. Kicking out on full including from a kick off, some basic catch and pass errors and missed tackles.

Losing by 12 was reasonable reflection of game, didn't deserve to lose by more. Try just before half time and try where we were attacking and lost ball and Sharks ran 100 metres were the difference.

Despite the result, an enjoyable day on the hill in Ballarat.

I'm not so much disappointed with the basic errors as I am with the tactical decisions. Kicking the ball away repeatedly when the other team is down 1-2 players was just daft as was that display of passing it wide and being systematically forced back 40m's by the rush defence.

One guy strips the ball. Bosch makes one 5m pass. Then turns up to score.

That's what I think of that counterattack.

Are you basing his career prospects on it?

Hahaha just own up, you have no idea!!

One pass to let the winger run 90m isn't running a game. Class 10s run a game. Bosch didn't do it - not that he needed to.

I know you've got a reputation on here for making throwaway comments and being unable to back them up, but stop trying to fist yourself so hard.

Haha meltdown.

Did Curwin Bosch play well?

I think it’s pretty evident who can’t back up yada yada

The Rebels are like rabbits in headlights. The passage of play where they had a scrum in their own 22 and went back over half way just shows how they panic
You mean the 14 phases with 4 offside penalties that were not called?

Not saying the Rebels should have won, but the inconstancy is getting worse with refs. Try on half time is a forward pass every day of the week, not moving fast enough for 5 meters forward momentum. Than the onfield discision rule shots me to, no proof that the ball was grounded on the line and it has to be given.

All I'll say about today was that I could have flown to Bali and been by a pool in the time it took me to get to and from Mars Stadium today, and that includes an early exit to make sure I got on the bus/train to Melbourne. Christ what a colossal waste of time.

I really think it is almost time for the rebels to look for another coach. I just don't think Wessels is the answer

But that doesn't excuse the very poor decision of the ref on the field. In that situation he really should not have assumed the ball had been placed on or over the try line. The player was caught short of the line and there was no reason to expect that he had reached out to the line. His instruction to the video ref was also misleading. To the effect of "Saw a grounding. Any compelling reason to not award a try". The video ref also saw a grounding but like the rest of us must have seen it was well short of the goal line.

I agree about the errors made by the Rebels RN. But two outstanding errors by the Ref resulted in two tries, 14 points, to the Sharks. In what world is that acceptable and why should we absolve the refs of their errors because one of the sides wasn't as good as the other?

Just watched some parts of the game again, that forward pass at the end of the first half is killing me. He was flat footed when receiving the ball, not running at all and threw a forward pass. How is a ref aloud to get away with this shit, it's not even bad reffing at that point, it's cheating when you watch a replay and refuse to change your decision that was clearly wrong.
