Where to for Super Rugby?

^ Super 12 was successful.

But that relative success was due to a different sporting environment for rugby in the late nineties and early noughties.

It's not due to having a "magic number" of 12 teams.

You can't recreate 1999 - time has moved on.

Reverting back to that format but expanding the schedule to a double round robin would greatly increase the level of content available.
Week to week, it wouldn't. There'd be a reduction.

Also, such a season would be spread over 6 to 7 months (possibly into 8 if there is a month off in the middle for Tests) instead of 3 to 4 months. The second half of such a year would become a non-event for the bottom 4-5 sides and dragging out twice as long.

It would only pour more oil onto the soup kitchen dumpster fire.

Giving people more home games could help to get more people to the stadium. People like being members, and members like to buy products with a lot of value. $300 for 12 home games sounds a heap better than $200 for 8 home games.

The overseas tours would be nightmares. It would take a scheduling wizard to come up with something so the nine Tasman teams could all have their four weeks in South Africa without just making it a season with one half in the Republic and the other half in the Pacific.

Single round robin is probably too short to offer to broadcasters, so it would have to be at least round robin + half.

Can I get an amen? That was back when the Auckland Blues was still a thing.

Reds v Blues used to be like a finals match when S12 first started.

Also, remember the video games back then? Ohhh man!!

A happy Dismal Pillock "ponging it up" in his Fukushima control room like it was 1999.

I'm interested to see how long it takes for Rugby Au to announce that it will be unable to support 4 Australian teams beyond 2020.
IF this does happen - which team will be cut?
Hard to cut the Brumbies if they finish top of the conference again.

Could provide a ready-made team for GRR.

It'll be Melbourne. There's no way in hell either the Reds or Tahs would be in line and the Brumbies are almost as guaranteed as they are. Melbourne has been an expensive and failed experiment.

It'll be tough no doubt. Teams would have to host games in blocks I'd imagine. A single round robin is too short of a format to be sustainable unless there's coupled with some kind Cup competition or split into two distinct phases etc.

Admire, your work and passion.

However, I feel you and many others keep trying to solve our issues but in way to much detail and in arriving at the conclusion prior to identifying all current, past and future details.

Whether or not building up the NRC will work or not, is impossible to determine.

The broader answer is first acceptance of the issues and then working with stakeholders to determine a solution.

For me the answer used to be the establishment of a national domestic competition to be developed and phased in over 5 years. We don’t have 5 years anymore. But the need to not operate in a top down approach by saying this is the answer now go and make it work is the last thing we need.

I will put my hand up and say I no longer have an answer other than we are in very deep poo.

We need detailed analysis and just maybe Castle has provided this in her comprehensive package from school boy to international offerings.

My thoughts on Super Rugby are reasonably well known. However, it can’t be replaced over night even I admit to this and always have.

But lets work with key stakeholders within the existing rugby framework to start with i.e. GPS schools & Shute Shield both enjoy tradition and support and grow from there.

It wasn't that bad a piece! You could do worse than have John Singleton in your corner! Besides the status quo isn't exactly working a charm.

The no kicking into touch on the full was used in GRR last year. Worked well enough. He touches on simplifying the laws which certainly wouldn't hurt.

Tactical kicking and using it as an exit strategy is a key part of rugby. It has the risk-reward element in your own half which balances pretty well: kick it away and gain territory at the cost of possession, or keep the ball in hand and risk losing territory and possession.

There's a lot of rugby that people malign which is really part of what makes it such a good sport. People talk shit about scrums until they see their pack destroy the opposition against the feed. People talk shit about kicking it away until they force a turnover on the line and boot it up field to relieve the pressure. People talk shit about mauls then cheer when their locks hold up a scrumhalf and force the turnover.

We have a lot of the game of rugby really well worked out, and it's a brilliant game with gripping contests from 4th grade all the way to Test rugby. Little tweaks like stopping the clock after the first scrum reset are great ideas. Test them. Big changes like adjusting how much a score is worth or banning kicking the ball out is just a tad fucked.

Maybe not that far off the mark, the rebels are proving to be a very costly exercise, and the rumor mill is already in swing.

But i can't see why Twiggy would risk taking the Rebels on, sadly Victoria is a rugby desert, surely a team in NSW would be a better option.

Super 12 was pretty damn successful. Reverting back to that format but expanding the schedule to a double round robin would greatly increase the level of content available. Yes, you'd still have to make a trip to SA/Arg but you'd still have 18 games in more than workable time zones. Regarding SA getting a commitment that the 3 teams featuring in SA are as strong as they could possibly be would be necessary. But the goal is to ensure that we have 3 competition squads with at least two of them playing in our time zones at all times.

Super 12 was long time ago and sports market moved on / changed. Super 12 with
South Africa won’t work as fans moved against the whole South Africa involvement and lack of content in good local time zones. Super 12 won’t solve this. We need to now move forward and not go back to past competition structures.

I actually think given GRR as competition sitting below super rugby in terms of quality and cost of players the rebels would be better suited to GRR. I am also not insulting GRR as just more stating facts on quality and cost of players which also at this point commercially makes sense for grr at this point.
