Highlanders v Rebels, RD 5 - 28th Feb

The difference Louwrens makes in there instead of Lomani is quite impressive. To'omua looks much better with him. Also against a weaker forward pack, the Rebels forwards really did well. I expected Wessels' nephew, chokaletenberg, to be an absolute flop, another Le Roux Roets, but he was pretty decent tonight for a young bloke.

Kellaway proving me wrong about him too.

LRR doesn't look like an absolute flop with the Shorks this year.

Good in the air but other skills mostly not sighted. Positioning in defense really atrocious.

The only part of DH-P's game I didn't like was the way he kept yabbering at the ref after Meakes' card. Meakes would have already been sitting down before he shut up. Move on.

The best fullback in the country by so far it's not funny, (although that young Red's guy is showing plenty of promise).

Kudos to the Rebs for, obviously, their fine win but also for showing their concern & sympathy when Lentjes got taken off.

Watching bits of the game again:
  • Really can't stress how much better To'omua looks off Louwrens. He made about 5 half breaks and has a wonderful offload game in contact.
  • Nice to see the much maligned Rebels forwards hold their own in the scrums and score a 15m maul try. Philip and Saffa lock were good.
  • Kellaway's two tries were both quite opportunistic, but he still had a lot of work to do. Great finisher and still looks to have his pace. Opportunities are given to both teams each game and we (Rebels/Wallabies) often completely fluff it. Great to have killer instinct.
  • One swallow does not make a Summer - but still, great to win on the road in NZ. I don't care how shite the Highlanders are, they beat the best Aussie team away and the Rebels just won in Dunedin for the first time in their existence. Feels good.

To'omua is looking more and more like he the 10 for Wallabies doesn't he?
I agree Dc, I would think most Rebel's supporters should be feeling bloody good today, should enjoy a bloody well played game, and good team effort!

Can’t help but feel that first game against the Sunwolves will come to bite us in the bum. Just like Coleman’s refusal to take the 3 against the Jags 2 seasons ago for a draw after 80mins instead of trying for the win, it ended up being the difference to not making the finals. Then the Tahs 2nd half comeback last year, failing to manage an easily won game. Again the difference to making the finals.

Rebels lineout maul try was a nice bit of deception, and well setup under current interpretations, but just as illegal as any this year.

Players coming in from offside way before they are allowed to all over the place

Clan paid the price for committing the cardinal sin of desperately trying to go wide without first going forward. Both intercept tries were so telegraphed it wasn't funny & there could very easily have been at least a third.

Wasn't home last night, so just watched the game. Rangi, Koegelenberg and Philip were all very good. Louwrens and To'omua have formed a good combination. Meakes solid as usual and Kellaway opportunistic.

It was good to see the Rebels disrupt the Highlanders' lineout so much.

Finally some solid form from To'omua. It really does make a world of difference with a forward pack providing go-forward and a solid half-back providing clean service.

In the first 5mins I thought - Oh no! Not that blookdy grubber in the corner again that he overdoes. But he finished the game with a lot of balance around option taking. Nice some offloads and half-breaks too. defence is always solid from To'omua.

Loving the Aussie flyhalf battle. JOC (James O'Connor) V To'omua, and Lolesio V Harrison. There isn't much between them and they are all showing less negatives then Foley and Cooper (besides experience).

Rangi played a solid game at Hooker too. Wonder if he'll challenge for a wallabies spot.
