Barker vs Scots will be interesting. Any early tips for this game?

Are barker as strong as last year?

I believe scots will blowout Barker in the lower divisions, but the first xv will be a tough game.

Hey RF1, I would have to agree with you on scots and Barker in the first XV to be a tough game. Dont know too many Barker boys but Scots looking strong with Savala playing his second year in the first XV at five eighth with the rest of his back line being big including Sui Wong and connor Mccmullen in the mix. Aswell as there forwwards having Darcy clifton a tough, agressive flanker will also be playing his second year of first XV.

Just to clarify, my understanding is the Waverley boys parents approached Cranbrook - Unhappy with the Academic side of things?? (There may be other reasons?)
In the process of trying to get in to Cranbrook, they have asked (why wouldn't they) for any type of bursary etc.

Cranbrook only has 2 all round scholarships available for a Year 9 or 10 boy (I think). The Martin Pitt & The Matt Street scholarships. There maybe 1 other indigenous scholarship, but not sure.

Cranbrook would only accept someone if either of those scholarships are up for renewal. Happens every 2-3 years.

As for "offering positions to quite a few" - Rubbish! Don't think your source is correct.

Well said Bolivia. Seeing you are a cranbrook fan whats your take on the predicted line up for their first XV side.

Just an updated prediction of the Waverley 1st XV as we get closer to trials.

1. Jim Waterhouse
2. Charlie Barber.
3. Ben Dunning/Davy Moale
4. Axel Runow
5. Fritz HT
6. Clem Haloholo/Asolelei Fretton/Davy Moale
7. Ethan King/Will Baker
8. Benjamain Asolelei Fretton/Ethan King
9. Klayton Thorn
10. Emmanuel Di Bartolo
11. Jordan Swann
12. Ronald Volkman/Benjamain Asolelei Fretton
13. Caspar Cairns/Christian Smirnotis/Aaron Dimovitch
14. Christian Smirnotis/Dane Towns/Aaron Dimovitch
15. Christian Smirnotis/Ronald Volkman/Dane Towns/Mitch Eyles

There will be plenty of depth for Waverley with a number of 16A's/2nd XV more than capable of doing a job for the side as they progress this season.

- I except Smirnotis to be there- just not sure where.

- Moale was rumoured to be playing prop, although it looks unlikely he will be there, expect to see him at #6

- Cairns will most likely lock down the #13 jersey as he is so solid defensively and possesses both a strong short and long passing game.

- Wing Positions will be hotly contested- I believe wing combinations will change frequently during the trails before becoming more concrete towards CAS

Overall: like last year this team has the potential to win it, however only time will tell. Provided they have a good run with injuries, and take lessons from the trials and apply them under pressure during CAS games, they can definitely go close to winning this comp. Their biggest tests will be Knox and Barker, however in Round 5 Trinity have the ability to cause an upset if the Waves aren't 100% on their game.

Predicted finish: 1st or 2nd

As a Barker supporter, appropriate expletive thought but not verbalised. Guess he will be a handful.

Very interesting selections here SSA,

As you pointed out much will depend on the early games as to who wins the final CAS spots.
There are a number of other boys you haven't mentioned which is fair enough given the depth but I think some of these others will emerge.

Give us your view on a 2nd XV, as you would think this team should also be quite competitive.

Was lucky enough to be walking my dogs at Queens Park last week and bumped into the huge pack of Waverlians training. A couple of tall timbers missing from last year's squad but was good to see many familiar faces in action and looking ready for the looming season. Some vacant positions below but judging from the fit squad I saw these spots will easily be filled. Similar to SSA above my prediction-
1. Jim Waterhouse
2. Charlie Barber
3. Davvy Moale
4. Axel Runow
5. Halaholo
6. ?
7. Will Baker
8. Ethan King
9. Klayton Thorn
10. Ronald Volkman
11. Jordan Swann
12. Asolelei Fretton
13. ?
14. Eyeles /Aaron Dimovitch
15. Emmanuel Dibartolo

Matty D,

Given the depth available,I am guessing that the coaches will obviously use the GPS games as selection criteria for the CAS comp.
If so, the squad will also include, Reeve Smith (prop), Darcy Sullivan (hooker), Zac Carr Smith (wing), Christian Smirnotis (wing), Fritz HT (2nd row), Hugh Johnson (half back), Ben Dunning (prop), Peter Cassimatis (prop), Rohan Braham (flanker),Caspar Cairns (centre) and maybe a few others, all of whom may well start some of these games, so a rotation strategy.

Key to the final CAS starting line up, aside from injury, will be the individual performance of all players, and perhaps even more importantly the thinking behind where to best play certain players. eg in particular where to play Fretton,Volkman,
Di Bartolo, Moale. This could really change the line up from the predictions that have been posted.

In terms of a 2nd XV, apart from a couple of players returning from last year (Elder, Braham, Johnson etc.), it would be too difficult to pick with upto 35 boys more than capable of playing in that side. It will come down to the internal trials for most spots. What I will say, is the Waverley 3rd XV will be twice as strong as last year, and that's scary........

Strongly agree with you SSA, a friend of mines son is up there in the mix with the first and second XV and he has also mention about the depth that waverly have. Will be very interesting to see how the waverly 1st 2nds and 3rds go this year. Bring on 2020 rugby!!

It’s interesting that Waverley again appears to be talking up their chances after coming 4th last year and having basically the same team. Barker retains the majority of their 2019 premiership winning 1st XV team and their formidable 2nds and 16a’s that only lost due to some dubious refereeing calls and are barely talking the same level.

Expect a 3peat for the first time for many years in CAS this year- with daylight second.

Some on this thread may be interested that the Australian Schools Rugby Lunch is less than three weeks away. I'm sure Gordon Bray & Sir Peter Cosgrove will be excellent. Often a lot of former Wallabies and rugby faces end up at this lunch too. Tickets can be got here I believe: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=572934&

With the likings of Waves and Barker being favourites to take out the CAS premiership, where should the three other teams fall after last years results ?

Good to be back fellas, I believe that we are in store for another cracker CAS season. I noticed that there had been a few predicted line-ups popping up around the forum, so I thought I ought to do do one for the Brook.

1XV Cranbrook

1. Ben Jones
2. Nosa Obaseki
3. Benny Fella
4. Sam Nicholas
5. Archie Hyles
6. Saxon Purcell
7. Max White
8. Jack Ryan
9. Will Gerstl/Max Tilley/Harrison Gibbons
10. Will Clunies-Ross
11. Pete Marcellos
12. Zac McConnell
13. Liam Sartena
14. Will Siriano
15. Ethan Flanagan

It's quite a versatile team for Cranbrook this year. There are abundant amounts of utility forwards with players who can play anywhere in the pack, so there might be some change come Round 1. The half-back position seems to be a spot of contention, with the departure of premier halfback Tas Smith leaving a hole. Similarly to the forwards the backs have great move-ability and aside from the ball-handling heavy roles there is great depth. A large proportion of the total playing 23 will feature players from the 16A's who lost a few close games including Waverley's closest game of the season. Some notable exclusions include Matteo Baldwin (ankle injury) and Oliver Torrance (excessive weight- reportedly took the bulking season to seriously).

See you on the sideline,
RL

Hey RL, seems like the number nine jersey is there up for grabs with a fair few players that I am unfamiliar with. Suprised to see that Bolivia's son is not there in the mix especially after his past achievements making the u12 NSW side a while back. Anyways thats all from me, all the best to the Brook.
