Just saw the 52 man squad announced for the Junior All Blacks today and notable Australian Rep players who went to NZ to play rugby, Campbell Parata and Bailey Tau Tau have not been included. Wondering if they are injured or will we see a double repeat of Nick Frost and they return to take positions in the Junior Wallabies.
Bailey is back home now and will most likely be representing our Junior Wallabies.

The way rep teams get picked these days maybe he is seen as not tall enough to play 6/8, last time I saw him play he filled a power forward role , not that of a 7.

Good luck to him , he will be 20 this year I think , so last crack at the pathways.

He’s in the squad so the coaches must see some opportunity for him.

Has there been anything official released from the powers that be regarding the Junior RWC?

The whole area that's hosting it this year is currently shut down to travel.

Down to around 45ish , they are in Canberra this week training , play internal trials this Sat.

Don't think the current squad will get officially announced.

Final squad will get announced around May based on last year, if it's still on.

Australia still hasn't hosted this. What's doing. South Africa, NZ, England, Wales, Japan, Georgia, Argentina 2x, France 2x, Italy 2x and potentially 3x have.

Good point, but how many people do you think would attend these fixtures if in AUS??

In France they sold out complete stadiums, even for matches not involving France. Think Aus vs NZ got about 15 K .

I think WR (World Rugby) would be wise to keep it where the crowds support

What's the point there? Were the matches sold out in every other country? They are played mid-week in the middle of the day at park grounds. Sometimes it's really only family and friends there + other teams.

from what I saw, Georgia had very small venues and crowds. Not too sure about Argentina, didnt get to see much of it.

The point is, if the Europeans really support it at level that is far higher then elsewhere, then I think there is a good argument for holding in the countries that will fill stadiums and support it. I would be embarrassed if it was held here. It would be like a NRC crowd or less for the AUS games. - Maybe some country venues like Mudgee might work.

F ALL mention in the media on last years campaign although we played in the final. I even wrote to Paul Kennedy on ABC News Breakfast alerting him to the U20 campaign, still no mention.

On the same argument, Fiji has never held a world cup, and never likely to in my lifetime. They will always put them where it makes commercial sense to do so.

I have no idea why Australia has not held it. But I will say with absolutely certainty it has NOTHING to do with crowds in attendance for the matches.

I’d say one of the major reasons is the availability of quality grounds over the period that the cup is scheduled to run.

Rectangular stadiums around the country are pretty busy with NRL/Super Rugby, Australia doesn’t have as many ‘boutique’ stadiums as other countries do, there’s a handful in Sydney but other then that it’s down to club grounds. Some club grounds might be suitable, but in many cases the grounds are in poor shape that it’s not really worth it.

I also suspect the logistical cost of hosting it in Australia would be greater then other countries, teams would need to be spread between Brisbane and Melbourne, I’d imagine the transport costs are more prohibitive then France/Japan/Italy in that regard., notably the countries who have hosted more then once are also big football countries, I wonder if there is a correlation there because of having more boutique stadiums available through football association and the number of time hosted.

It's not a spending priority from RA's own purse. Pure and simple, end of story.

From the purported tilt at bringing the tournament here for 3 years in a row (which is how WR (World Rugby) are perhaps looking at making it into a more commercial proposition in the future) …

"RugbyWA is planning a bold bid to bring the international junior world cup to Perth for … the 2021, 2022 and 2023 World Rugby U20 Championships."
"The plan has the backing of Rugby Australia who would be unable to fund or stage the event on a stand-alone basis."

NZ hosted the tournament purely in Auckland. If it was in Australia it would go to a specific city - Sydney or Brisbane.

They held matches at North Harbour and Counties home grounds and a couple at Eden Park.

Sydney could easily offer up Concord and Leichardt oval. Brisbane could use Ballymore and Bond? (some QLDer help me)

I came up with these logistics in 3 minutes.

Edit: To kiap's point I'm staggered that the home nation has to fund it and not WR (World Rugby). How does the Italian union, Argentinean union or even the Georgian union able to afford it but some reason RA can't!?

Yeah, I don't think it's necessarily hugely expensive. But it just doesn't make any money as a one-off single-year event.

When organizations are skint, priorities get implemented.

If it's made into hosting for 3 years, though, there is a better possibility of sponsorship.

If it was in Australia it would go to a specific city - Sydney or Brisbane.

IF someone pays for that.

Show me the money … :D
