Where to for Super Rugby?

Well, as I'm watching the Lautui/Lions games I've just thought of the simplest solution for at the very least Australian teams. Enter the Super Rugby squads into the NRC and play a full home and away season. That'd be 10 games plus finals. Assuming the RC and Bledisloe are cancelled that'll see the best possible players available.

Sorry WOB - do you mean CV-19? If so I just don't think so.

Winter is likely to see things peaking, hopefully at steady and controllable numbers. Vaccine, if it comes, is highly unlikely prior to winter 2021.

Doesn't it peak in May/ June & be no worse than seasonal flu by July?

About time they called it.

Yeah it's sad but there is no choice when people's lives are on the line.

Gotta agree guys.

Seems as each hour passes another major sport announces some kind of suspension or season cancelled.

Latest I read was the EPL was to finish, give the crown to Liverpool have no team send down and promote two teams and have a 22 team competition next year.

NBL in the US I have also heard, Formula 1 cars, golf, the list goes on and is growing quickly. Wayne Bennett has called on the NRL to be cancelled for the coming season and Phil Gould has backed him.

Wonders aloud about state government stadium contracts as in most countries the teams own their own stadiums but we tend to hire them and on long term contracts. Further with stadium service providers often paying hefty up front fees for exclusive rights. Add player and back office wages. You could equally season ticket holders may want refunds. The obvious broadcast revenue if no games, throw in sponsors as well.

Who is going to foot the bill, my guess is no code in Australia has the reserves to foot this kinda loss.

Combine all codes and sports and the bill would be insane.

Only six NZ derbies have been played & presumably the stat for SA & Aus would be similar so maybe we go domestic-only for a while then have some kind of Champions League-style finals series after that? Difficult to impossible to include the Jags & Sunwolves but I guess SA would get Kings & Cheetahs back & maybe, just maybe, RA & GRR could come to some kind of deal.

The Sunwolves players are already all in Australia - so they could be accommodated here.

But very tough on anyone with a family.

I guess there are different models. I thought winter saw a more or less continuous run, hopefully flat-lining at a level the health system can cope with, then backs off with the summer heat.

I see some media speculation this morning that SANZAAR hopes top 8 teams as of tonight might be able to play a finals series of sorts in June, subject to the virus-driven status as it evolves.

The current thinking apparently is that, with the containment measures in place and being considered, the spread of the virus will take the shape of a flattened Bell Curve. With the peak expected around June/July, the period from July to December will probably look like the reverse of the January to June period. The warmer weather in Spring and early Summer might be expected to see a bit steeper tailing off, but I reckon we ought to be expecting cases to arise and restrictions to still be in place at least until September/October.

The biggest questions of all are: when will a viable, mass-manufacturable, vaccine arrive and ditto a safe anti-viral drug to significantly reduce the negative effects for those that acquire the virus.

Everything else is just holding back the volume of cases until these two points of arrival.

Rather than playing no games for 2 weeks I would have thought sensible idea is schedule derby games between 4 oz super rugby sides - ok would be behind close doors but would provide content for fox etc

I agree with Joao that rather than oz sides playing no games and being paid we implement an emergency plan b
