Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Could move this back to the broadcasting rights?

Yes. I wonder how much schoolboy rugby will fetch in the new package?

I remember watching on TV a young Kurtley Beale run around for Joeys in 2006. While I agree he hasn't quite lived up to the lofty predictions made at the time, I think the blame for that lies with the predictions rather than Kurtley.

As much as he was thrust into pro rugby early, people forget he took the Waratahs to the 2008 Super Rugby Final as a teenage 10, and the game was on a knife edge before he went off injured IIRC.

Well I am wondering how much Foxtel intend to drop the price of their service, seems they no longer paying anyone for live sport, no payments made to RA, NRL,NRL and seemingly Soccer, thay must have slashed their costs, they certainly slashed their content.

Cancelled fox subscription today - took an hour to get through to do so due to no doubt similar calls to mind.

I was always going to leave to shift to Kayo which suspect lot who left will be in same boat.

Interesting if this impacts on whether fox bids for rugby now

Yep I spent an hour online last night to be told I need to ring back at 9 today. I won't bother with kayo even until rugby is up and running!

It seems counter intuitive to cancel a subscription to a service you hope bids for the right to televise your sport.

Im not sure, I think Foxtel will be banking on the laziness of the general customer to not change their plan even if their favourite program is cut. Some people have a tendency for brand loyalty and reluctance to change, there's certainly a monetary value to that which Foxtel will be hoping to retain.

I have said it before, there is a hard core of Foxtel viewers who like the convenience and can afford to pay for it. Hopefully, a fair swag of those are rah rahs.

I agree, I have just changed my foxtel, and just said it was because they no longer showed live rugby, missus watches a few things so kept basic package, and can always add sports whenever I want if they got rugby back !!

What went wrong for Kurtley? Why did he not continue to develop as a no 10? Did they throw him in there too early? Was it his tackling? Was it the way they play at seniors level? What?
Did it really go wrong?

He has been a quality player for a long time, a lengthy career and earned huge money for playing a game he loves (I assume he loves it).

At times he has been among the top handful of players in his position, you cant really ask for more than that.

I think the issue he had is what influences most modern Australian backs, they are not complete players, because they dominate at school they get signed to contracts without ever having to learn a complete range of skills. We have back threes who cant kick, backs who cant pass both ways, backs who cant draw in a defense and then pass (would rather run over the top like they did at school because they were the biggest kid) and then play makers who don't tackle.

All in all, I think KB (Kurtley Beale) has had a pretty decent career and I think most juniors would love to achieve what he has

My parents are/were some of those, have had Foxtel for over 20 years now, don't understand 'Netflix' or 'Stan', and think the only way to watch the latest movies is with Foxtel. When I visited them last year I looked plan and found out they were paying over $130/month for Foxtel platinum across two tvs, a ridiculous amount. Especially since one of the Foxtel set top boxes only allowed SD quality.

Its an absolute rip-off

This is just Foxtel practising standard practice of generating higher returns from loyal customers who don’t check/ review latest pricing in the market. Nothing unusual here as I only got better deal when a year ago checked my subscription compared to advertised price offers. I now have cancelled my subscription and as I told them won’t go back to a set top box as future is streaming services ie may subscribe to Kayo if offers rugby....

Told my old man to ditch his subscription. He was paying 120 or so and they offered it to him for 40 when he called. My missus uses his login to watch friends reruns in the background so im chalking it up as a win.

I called up on behalf of my old man, said i wanted to quit because their was no discount for loyal customers, had been a customer for 20 years and they were offering a $40 discount for people to sign up.

In the end, they gave me(my parents) the discount and put HD on one of the set-top boxes for free, but wouldn't put it on the other one or replace the old set-top box running SD.

I don't disagree with any of that.

Kurtley didn't meet the expectations many people had of him. I'm just wondering why. Perhaps as you suggest, what someone is like at schoolboy level can give a false impression of what they will be like later on - no matter how good they are at school.

Well channel 9 is trying to break contract with the NRL, wont be paying their quarterly broadcast payment on the 1st April, and has rejected the notion that a shortened season in Sep-Dec would adequately compensate for the value they had previously agreed too.
