COVID-19 Stuff Here

Even so, more beds require more staff.

Yes but at a lower rate than the number of beds.

Anyway, they're trying to train more staff in readiness to open up again to start easing lockdowns. I doubt we will see it explicitly when they release the models but the ultimate aim is likely herd immunity with circa 30k deaths (2 x number of smoking deaths per year).

What's the benefit in preventing people from going for a drive? seems a bit overzealous.

I'm not a cop, but I guess the questions are of destination and passengers. That kid getting done for having a driving lesson with their mum was classic Victoria Police behaviour.

It put the warning out though. I was contemplating a country drive to give a friend who's had his first child a gift, but I don't think I can squeeze that in as 'essential travel'.

Yeah - but why can't you drive? As long as you are alone or with people from your household it doesnt seem like it would increase the spread of infection in any way?

I can't see the policy behind this decision. If the restrictions get any tighter/irrational people will just start to ignore them.

My best guess is that it's to set a clear behavioural standard. Which is to stay in or close to your home, undertaking essential activities only.

Me going for a drive to my mate's house in country Victoria is clearly not a risk to anyone, but when 100k people start doing it, all of a sudden there's a hell of a lot more people stopping for petrol, buying food etc etc.

Complete madness to say you can’t drive around without a reasonable excuse. 101 on how to turn the public against you and speed up social distancing fatigue.

So, am I being a grumpy prick by getting annoyed when my mates go to their beach houses, despite the instructions not to? Probably am, just jealous 'cause I'm holed up in my shoebox apartment. But I'm surprised they haven't released many clear directions about Easter this weekend.

The social distancing laws definitely favour and consider people with houses over apartments.

Read recently 1 ICU bed required like 7 staff.

Pretty much. The nursing alone is normally 1:1. Ventillators and ECMO aren't just 'set and forget' devices, they require expertise to operate properly. Those ICU nurses are very highly trained. The 'anywhere in the world' that UTG brings up are places like Wuhan, Bergamo, Seattle, NYC, London, Barcelona - disaster zones with high mortality.

The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in the UK recommends 1:6 ratios for virus treatment so that more individuals needing ICU treatment can receive ventilator and intensive care.

NZ now at 1138 confirmed cases, the last doubling took about seven days & you can see the curve is definitely plateauing. Whether by good luck or good management we've still only had one death, the number of people in hospital has never exceeded a dozen & there's only ever been one or two in ICU at any time.

Jacinda put a lot of little minds at ease yesterday when she confirmed that both the Easter Bunny & the Tooth Fairy provide essential services therefore are allowed to keep working. She also announced late last week that supermarkets would open on Easter Sunday but not Good Friday: most will use GF to get their shelves stocked ready for the Saturday onslaught that's sure to occur.

I'm not sure if there's been any opinion polling done since lockdown but I'm picking there'll be world leaders who would kill (by proxy, of course :)) for the approval numbers Jacinda is gunna get when the next pole comes out. She hasn't put a foot wrong & just exudes calm, determination to get the job done, & empathy for those who're doing it tough. None of which should really surprise after how she handled the Mosque shootings & White Island eruption.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield, who would've been unknown to anyone outside of the healthcare sector a month ago, is similarly performing outstandingly. His Minister, not so much: drove his van, with his name & face all over the side of it, to a mountain biking track a week or so ago & has now admitted to driving his family 20km for a walk on the beach. Hasn't been fired as yet but come the pre-election reshuffle he'll be gone for sure if only to deprive the Nats of an attack-ad target.

Easter looming as a big test for the "stay the fuck at home" message. There's talk of road blocks on the way into the usual long weekend hotspots but I'd have thought it better to have them on the main roads out of the main centres, anyone without a very, VERY good reason for being on the road gets turned around & told to go home & stay home: if they get picked up a second time they get fined & put under home detention.

How about Boris J?

From what I've been reading he was at a critical stage, where after 10-odd days you either recover or deteriorate rapidly. Hopefully the move to critical care is precautionary and in advance of him needed intensive care. I know it's wrong to say it, but if the leader of an advanced western economy can't survive without the best care in the world thrown at him, it's a pretty sobering outlook for the rest of us who are being told to self-manage until escalation is necessary.

They overturned the fine.
