Park Run did a great post on facebook saying that of the close to 54 Million people who completed the 5km park run over the weekend, only 5 managed to do it at a speed quicker than he did a marathon in. It's an outstanding achievement.

And those 5 people on the park runs are elite. The world record for 5km (race conditions, no in-out pacemakers, no wind blocks, no laser) was run at 2:30 pace.

I gave up running a couple of years ago as I was experiencing really strong shin pain after a few minutes of running. Medical advice at the time ranged from the really helpful 'stop running' to advice to stretch more. Nothing helped.
In lockdown I have been doing a lot of walking over longer ranges and at higher pace than what I would normally do, and had noticed the same pain after about fifteen minutes of walking, but have found it has eased off and disappeared after about thirty to forty minutes. It's been a couple of days of the same result so am planning on raising up to running pace once the pain eases off tomorrow to see what happens.

Has anyone out there experienced something similar?

I used to get that when walking at faster pace, not running. Presumed it was some strain over the long attachment of tibialis anterior with the exaggerated pace. Shin splints. May be related to the pattern of foot placement in the stride and anatomy of the sole of the foot.
Then just went away.
Sorry, probably not much help.

Firstly: what shoes are you wearing for walks?
Secondly: what do you wear for work and casual?
Third: have you tried zero-offset shoes i.e. no heel lift?

Once upon a time - for a very short time - I had orthotics. Things were a fucking pain but hey the podiatrist made their money. Fucking pieces of shit were almost as bad as the plantar fasciitis I got to "cure" them.

Did a couple of long walks in sneakers with the orthotics, then threw the fucking things away. Moved to barefoot / minimalist shoes for casual and running and never looked back.

this x1000. been down that road. $80 shoe inserts c/o some white lab-coated snake oil salesman idiot, "wow, it's molded to the exact shape of my foot!" then after 5 minutes walking its like a claustrophobic foot coffin with my Morton's Neuroma stabbing me in the fucken brains like it's a cornered little bug-eyed fucken voodoo doll.

Have moved away from the fivefingers as they were a pain in the arse to source locally for a decent price. The wanker who got the license here was marking up bigtime, and ordering on eBay was a pain.

Moved to Merrell Vapourglove and Trail Glove. Not quite as goood but better than not moving at all.

I have been wearing either a pair of Puma suede trainers or Nike Freerun 2 that I have had for years, but usually the Nikes. For casual I tend to wear the Puma Suedes. Work-wise up until November I was in a pair of RM Williams or similar elastic side dress boot almost every day, but lately the same Pumas as previous answer.

I've got the Move Glove for gym - mainly because of the zany grip. Being single piece they just fit better. Would never run in them tho.

The Nike model says 8m heel drop on various web pages. I tend to trust nothing with a squishy heel because it encourages you to run on your heels, which *can* overextend your stride and result in ballistic stretch to the shin.

Can be done with any shoe, but barefoot style tends to avoid heel strike and you run flat or forefoot strike - fucking murder on the calves until you're used to it.

Yeah, have seen them - the look good, but despite wearing the tread off the middle of the vapours, they probably have another twelve months of use (and the added benefit of being beaten up enough to annoy the girlfriend)

Thanks Pfitzy. When you talk about barefoot style, are you talking about a low drop shoe, or actually changing your running style?

I have nearly worn the ball of the vapour gloves smooth. The issue with the minimalist shoe is extremely limited life on concrete, but I don't have much else to run on.

Both I think. Zero drop shoes for all walking as a starting point, really leaning into it so you can develop a midfoot strike pattern. Short runs - sprints even - will help get you further along, and then work into a rhythm for longer runs.

Magnesium tablets for your calves :)

I was meant to be testing singles the week it all shutdown. Doing a lot of volume with the existing equipment I had at home but still waiting on the extra kit I ordered over a month ago so I can get back into proper strength work for the big three.
