I'm not making this up: at this very moment The Parrot is calling the whole coronavirus pandemic a hoax and is putting the boot into the various Australian governments' responses. Simply bloody appalling.

Holy shit, even our worst media tarts haven't gone beyond "the government's over-reacting & it'll cost them the election". If the station bosses have any balls at all they should kick him to the kerb immediately.

I only listened to about AJ for 20 minutes this morning doing the school run so didn't hear what you heard.
I did hear him say (paraphrasing) that we've done our bit in lockdown and now its time for governments to treat us as adults by totally reopening the country and let individuals make their own decisions about sheltering or re-engaging in all of society's offerings.
I agree with that position.
We were told that all the precautions were designed to flatten the curve.
We've done that, at enormous cost.
Time to restrict government intervention in business and personal freedoms to international travel and the COVID susceptible demographic.

Disagree FF (Folau Fainga'a).
I am totally on board with the current strategy, ie open a few things up, monitor the outcome, then a few more etc.
Opening everything up at once and having a massive second wave causing everything to be shut down again is the worst possible outcome. This 'treat us as adults' concept is great in theory, but as someone who deals with the general public all the time for a living, I can tell you that is a hugely optimistic assessment of a big chunk of the population.

No, that's not hypocritical at all.
His age and recent health problems put him right in the demographic that could catch Wuhan Flu easily and die from it.
He is advocating for all other Australians to be able to re-open their business, go to the footy, watch Opera, stand on the sidelines of the Under 7s rugby in the pouring rain as your grandson plays his first game, eat at restaurants, take the caravan to Cairns for the southern winter - I could go on but you get the drift.
Just because he has chosen to self isolate doesn't mean he can't have an opinion about the national response to this pandemic.
What you are saying is like demanding the entire Board of RA be made up of current players because only they have the knowledge to make the game work.

Well, we get to disagree, I have a greater trust in my fellow humans to make reasonable decisions most of the time without the requirement of force. So do we really need the threat of force to make good decisions in every day life?

The problem with this logic is that the Pareto principle well and truly applies here (and possibly to a much larger degree). The Pareto principle suggests that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Depending on the study (and I note they are only in preprint stage) suggests that potentially even less than 20% of the cases are responsible for 80% of the infections.

Most people doing the right thing doesn't necessarily give us nearly the outcome we need because a small percentage cause the bulk of the damage.

The most costly thing that could happen for us now is a second wave hitting before businesses etc. have had some time to recover.

He's literally telling his listeners, half of which are 65+ that the pandemic is essentially a hoax and there is nothing to worry about.

Meanwhile he is taking precautions against the pandemic he is calling a hoax because he is in the same high risk category as his listeners.

If you were trying to create a textbook example of hypocrisy it would be harder to come up with a better one.

Only one new case in the past eight days & that links back to an existing cluster. Bars reopened on Friday & most seem to have kept to the conditions (all-seated, max 10 per table & 2m between tables, table service only & one server only per table) although police shut down one in the Auckland police district & another in Counties-Manukau. Expert advice is that we need two full weeks of pretty much everything being open & if the numbers stay in the 0-2 a day range then the remaining restrictions (other than those at the border) can be lifted or at least further relaxed.

Domestic tourism is coming back strong, Queenstown & Wanaka are ramping up rapidly & with ski season just around the corner all the main fields are hiring in anticipation of a good(ish, all things considered) season. Some are even hopeful of seeing some Australians as your states reopen their borders: direct flights from Hobart to Queenstown have been specifically mentioned.

Over 250K people, or 5% of the population, have now been tested & over 350K have downloaded the "digital diary" ap that lets you scan QR codes wherever you go. Data stays on your phone & is deleted after 30 days. The only time anyone has access to your data is if you get sick & hand your phone over (you can't be compelled to do this).

That's great to hear WOB. I'm hoping our premiers can start opening things up further, given that the recent releases of restrictions haven't led to any significant outbreak. Plenty of people in WA tell our own premier that opening up the North of the state should happen sooner rather than later. It seems that the biggest threat to Australia is imported cases from overseas at the moment.

Interesting that whereas Jacinda seems to be saying that all Australian states would have to reopen their borders to each other before trans-Tasman flights resume, ScoMo is being reported as having said that there could be flights from say NSW if their border is opened, but not from Queensland if their's remains closed. Strikes me as a little odd, that, but not as odd as the new Leader of the Opposition declaring that after Australia the next country we simply must resume travel to & from is......... China!

Gatherings of up to 100 allowed from Friday which will please a lot of people no end, me included: father in law's 75th is on 10 June & it'd have been impossible to do anything under the max-10 reg (max-100 just makes it freakin' hard, the guest list will have to be very carefully compiled). it also makes things like community sport & a wider range of cultural events possible.

Next key date on the road back to almost normal is 8 June when cabinet will next re-assess the Level 2 regs & "no later than 22 June" a decision will be made re: going to Level 1.

A bit of a challenge when CDC estimates that 35% of coronavirus patients don't have symptoms

Yeah, I get the distinct impression from what I follow of New Zealand politics that the New Zealand National Party is basically a subsidiary of China Communist Party, Inc.

Anyway, congratulations on your recovery. Apart from anything else, it shows that not having our federal system can certainly make decision-making easier.

It's just about politics at this point, isn't it? Our northern towns risk missing out on their entire tourist season because of these regional borders and our southern regions are at this stage totally dependent on Perth for their business, but as long as Mark McGowan gets to give New South Wales a serve ...

It was reported in the West last week that WA Labor thinks it can capitalise on McGowan's personal popularity and pick up even more seats at next year's election, up from the high watermark they got in 2017. Meanwhile, virtually every letter to the paper that's about the state government's response is basically critical of what they're doing right now. I expect he'll be re-elected, but he's dreaming if he thinks he'll still be Mr 89% next March.

It appears that way, which is a bit disappointing. I've seen nothing from the health authorities suggesting that we can't open up the North and I know there was concern about remote Aboriginal communities and a potential spread. That's understandable, but I think the current threat has largely passed at this point.

I've supported the Premier's actions up until this point but I think he needs to pull the internal borders at least and then start a dialogue with the other states.

I agree that the public goodwill towards his government will turn very quickly without some action.

Your summation of The Parrot's rantings this morning is too kind, FF (Folau Fainga'a). Not only did he put the boot into everything the Australian governments have done these last few months he also, inexcusably, gave air to the Wuhan lab conspiracy theory. In cases like this it's always possible to find some academic somewhere to support the case, and The Parrot found one. He also quoted Sherri Markson on another point in some sort of verification of her earlier, discredited, "Five Eyes dossier leak". Just the most stupid shock jockery in trying times.

FF (Folau Fainga'a), come closer, no, closer than that. This illness we're all suffering from in some degree ATM is called "coronavirus", or "Covid-19". You're labelling yourself with a very strange crew if you refer to it as "Wuhan Flu".
