You been living under a rock or something?
The talk on these threads have painted the Reds 3 as the unloyal villains and their manager as the greedy @#$%. This post puts reality into what is about to happen. I know players who have requested their managers to seek OS options. No need to be a smart arse because TISM and things are about to get real

I think that was a reference to that article being a week or so old.

No doubt they are exploring options, I would be too. But it’s hard to commit either way until you know what the options look like. Ours might actually be the best one. I know of players who are going the other way, they want to stay here and play for Australia, not every pro player is playing purely for money. The fact that they get paid for it, for many, is a bonus. A lot of players here, if not the majority, are more interested in how they will make money once they stop playing footy.

I grew up playing in the amateur era so understand the concept of not getting paid to play rugby, but I think the significance of the drastic pay cuts from FOX will mean that players will have to work out now how they make money while they are still playing rugby, because $10-18m per year over 4 franchises will mean they are pretty much semi professional here. Apparently the players have to renogiate their contracts in June, so time will tell

I don’t disagree with any of that. We will be able to keep most of our top pro players. The lower tier aren’t really going to attract a lot of interest. It’s the middle group which is most vulnerable. However as many have pointed out there isn’t an endless demand for 2nd tier Australian rugby players. Particularly in a post Covid world, I suspect. Once you factor in the relocation costs and uncertainty, particularly given that most are well grounded here already, I don’t think the level of exports will be as high as many think.

Porch is still in contract whereas all the others had expired. Has had solid returns without been spectacular. Colby Fainga'a was the greatest of their recruits, won player of the year for them last season.

No surprise - always liked Colby and rated him the best of the brothers. Life is hard when you're competing with George Smith, David Pocock, Michael Hooper at al.

Im surprised no one has picked this up with all the doom and gloom going on. something positive

When the Junior Wallabies went within one point of a maiden under-20s World Cup last year, the hope was that Australian rugby was on the cusp of a golden new generation.
A historic seven-year drought-breaking 18-14 win by Australia's Schoolboys over New Zealand across the ditch reinforced the feeling the pathways were working and there was light at the end of a 17-year Bledisloe Cup black tunnel.
Now, two of the most exciting prospects in Australian rugby, Isaac Lucas and Harry Hockings, as well as a third established young Wallaby, Izack Rodda, are all but guaranteed to head overseas after their contracts were terminated by opting not to sign Rugby Australia's player pay cuts during COVID-19.
Yet last year's Junior Wallabies captain, Fraser McReight, who has been picked in Dave Rennie's Players of National Interest squad despite playing just 121 minutes of Super Rugby, believes the future remains bright.

"We have Scott Johnson, who's pretty much new as director of rugby, three new Wallaby coaches and we have pretty much a brand new younger generation coming through. I played with the under-20s, but even the 18s, I think Australian rugby's definitely in the right direction," McReight told Wide World of Sports.
"Obviously, we have a new interim CEO and a new chairman-elect too, so there's lots of changes happening as well, but that's not a negative thing, I think change is good.
"That's why I'm stoked to be a part of Australian rugby.
"I get to see the next generation of awesome footballers hopefully bring glory back to Australian rugby and then watch the code recover from where it is right now to back to where it was. That's what I aspire to."

As I said in another post, their salary cap is US$350k (AU$506k), I just can’t see it for players of this level. Surely some European team would offer them more than they could earn in US. Maybe massive changes in the cap are going to happen over there?
I didn't realise that the cap there was so low. The talk I've heard is that salaries in Oz will be massively reduced if a more substantial broadcast deal than is reported is brokered. I think all 3 are off contract so are weighing up their future. Perhaps they haven't had offers from Europe or Japan because that would seem to be more lucrative

As a marquee, you can get roughly 50-70k USD for an MLR deal, including an apartment and 3 return flights, and it only ties you up for 6 months of the year.

Sounds like a pretty good experience for an off contract Super Rugby player who isn't a) currently getting an offer because hiring is frozen and b) not on a wallaby radar/already fallen off it.

Sounds like you could take A US deal and be back in time for 2022 Super Rugby pretty easy.

Their competition clashes with every other comp, so there really isn’t any rugby money to be made in the other 6months. Essentially that is your deal for the year, unless you are positioning yourself for another $30k playing mitre 10 or Currie cup.

All 3 could get $150+ in ProD2, but maybe this is the indication that overseas spots have been tied up and USA is the only place left.

It’s still yet to be seen whether he was ahead of the curve in understanding the financial plight of RA, or whether he jumped ship early at the first sign of trouble. He might well prove to be the smart one if RA don’t get a broadcast agreement.
