Reds 2020

Had a look at the Reds Insta over lunch , there's a clip of ASY (Angus Scott-Young) doing the speech for T before the Tahs game.

They look about the same height in the video which surprised me.

His height and weight have been big issues - as it always is in pro rugby. He was 6ft 4 and 100kg. That's small for a blind side let alone adding horse power to a scrum. He reportedly has added mass.

Wood, Wright, ASY (Angus Scott-Young) and Tualima are all 6ft 4, with Wilson sneaking in at 6ft5 and Uru & LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) at 6ft 6

Anywhere in the word, Tualima and Wood would both be targeting the no.6 jersey, not the 4 or 5.

Height in lineouts is a massive advantage only if the ball is a) thrown straight or b) is thrown into outstretched finger tips. If the ball is going to be thrown to the jumpers chest, then just go for the best players..height be damned.

Thoughts on changes for Friday? (sorry if there is already a thread)
I reckon it will be the same team as last week following the W. Hegarty needs to step up his kicking for goal and distance and JOC (James O'Connor) needs to control the game and give Stewart and Hunter more ball. Think game plan last week was to play up the centre more than wide. Wider play would’ve been better against Tah’s but no so much as Rebels.
Also depends to Blythe’s head knock. Better if he’s in this week.

Not really. On a defensive lineout how often do we send anyone up? Successfully? It makes no difference whatsoever on our own throw where we really need to be doing better.

Even if you say, well both teams will lose their own throw more often than they win it, balances the stats - how would you change strategy around that?

Our line out needs to improve.

Reds were poor in the lineout for 2 reasons (1) losing their key lineout forward early (2) Rob Simmons.

Oh and I’ll throw in some poor Mafi throws late as well.

The first two will (should) be less of a factor this week.

It’s actually a worry how inconsistent our lineout has been all year, even before Covid.

There was a game before lockdown when we had LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto), Rodda and Hockings in the starting pack and still turned over ball on our own throw.

You get the feeling the lineout throwing/timing/lifting about as consistent as the goal kicking. All bread and butter skills for a pro rugby side.

Being the reserve hooker for a team who’s line out is already under pressure must be the worst position to be in, I don’t envy them. It’s no wonder you see so many reserve hookers come on a throw pies, the opposition already has their eye on and your line out caller is probably in panic mode.

It’s great to see LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) permanently at lock. Was such a bizarre Cheikism to try to break him by dilution & make him a 6. Could be our Courtney Lawes.

In fairness 90% of the posters on here were proposing it, and it’s not a unique Cheika trait to convert a not quite tall enough lock into a 6 for the higher level. Fardy is an example of a successful transition. I agree though, lock is his spot.

Wasn’t Thorn playing LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) at 6 at the start of this year when the Reds had a whole suite of locks?

I thought he was pretty quiet on the weekend, hopefully he steps it up this weekend.

Courtney Lawes plays a lot at 6.

What a disingenuous post. Good for you.

(He played there to make room for Skelton, because 140kgs, and has almost exclusively played lock at international level. But well done on your primary school level caveats - it's very clever, did you study law?)

Sanity prevails however, and he should almost never play 6 again, so play whatever made up game of logic you want.

Playing him between both positions helps no-one, especially him.

He has much more upside at lock, and it's the position we have the least depth in. He also has incredibly obvious shortfall's in his game playing in wider channels.

Pretty clear to me, can't be bothered debating anyone. Please don't quote me.

Thanks :)

Such a cry baby.

Before your next unnecessary rant, you should check which positions Lawes played in during the 4 games of the 2020 6 Nations.

I'll give you a hint. It wasn't lock.

* I am thankful LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) is playing lock and believe he should play there.

Thanks for your negligible contribution.

So to be clear here, even though you agreed with me (and more importantly the direction of the Reds, as that's where he is playing) you thought it added to the discourse to make mention of some obtuse, disingenuous bizarro narrative - which holds no water in reality?

Make it pretty easy to make your posts invisible. Thanks mate.

My recollection is that Fardy played 6 from the start at the Brumbies. I recall talking with Laurie Fisher in Scott's first season and predicting he would take the award for best player later that year, but Laurie pointed out that he was an injury replacement and wouldn't be eligible to enough games to get that award (as was the case with replacements in those days). I think Scott actually did go on to win the award either that year or not long after.

IMO he was always a 6 who played lock when needed.

when the reserve comes on and is under pressure they always seem to throw a long ball.

Why not switch it up and throw to the front quickly, I realise this give possession closer to the sideline that can be bad, but at least you have the ball. A quick throw to the front is not used enough and is usually successful and would allow the reserve to get into the game.

Who picks these teams? Tate was easily the best half back.
