Super Rugby AU R3 - Reds v Force

TSR

Mark Ella (57)
ASY (Angus Scott-Young) seemed to go ok, didn’t hurt the lineout too much. I thought Tualima’s footwork at the line was pretty good in the last 10.
Yeah - good points and I didn’t mean to diminish their performances. Agree they were both very good - but LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) really seems to be our go to man in the pack for big metres. He might carry high but you can’t argue with his impact, metre gain or work rate. And a couple of key line out steals to boot. Turning out to be a cracking player.

Good to see all of the Super RA games have been close games.

I do hope Thorn can get rid of the dumb penalties/cards. But on the flip side the Reds have shown some assurance/composure
In the clutch in each of their games.

What a great game. Good quality all round.

That game was an advertisement for why we should not cut a team. If we only had 2/3 teams in a TT comp, how would guys like Tevan Ferris, Ralston, Stander etc get a go. The #1 for the force was excellent as well.

Thorn looked like he had the Reds playing a League defensive pattern with the outside men continually jamming in.

If there's one system you don't want to introduce - it's the league system in the backs. Worst defenders in the world. Constantly coming in for no fucking reason.

The narrative for cutting Oz teams was the poster child in the context of Aus v NZ super teams. In a pure Australia v Australia team context i think what we have works fine. I don't think Australia should be backing down to NZ in any future discussions on competition structure. With a few more games under the belt and bringing a few more experienced heads back into the team (Cowan, Kahui), I think the Force will be more thank competitive, as they have shown already. It may take this year to get back up to scratch, but the big question is, do the Force see this or GRR as the best way ahead.

Equalizer- I suspect the preference is for inclusion with the rest of Australia, but with constitutional reforms and a seat at the table. GRR is the back-up plan if those criteria aren't met.

Yes, you get it wrong and one of those passes that get around it (over top etc..) with some pace out wide and suddenly your giving up a lot of field.

All rugby fans in the West agree with you.

Well Wessels would probably have been coaching rather than SAmpson so no guarantees.

If you gad told me we’d be winning games without Rodda, Hockings and Blyth I’d have not believed you. Really gutsy win tonight Reds. Against a very well coached outfit.

What an opportunity for Australian Rugby. Twiggy has Rugby Australia's BSB and Account code ready to save into his payments list. Don't f@ck things up RA. The future could be very very bright.

The Force could be showing the way of the future. Bringing in some non eligable Wallabies players to bolster their stocks and make a competative team. I'd be happy to watch that calibre of rugby every week

Exactly. If you bring in non eligible players and they lift the standard of your competition, that will inevitably lift the standards of your eligible Wallabies players. And having that 5th Aussie team in the comp will provide more opportunities to run and trial players. Boost your base to chase the ace!

I’ll be interested to see what the crowd figures were vs what were permitted. I was there and the atmosphere was excellent given there was only maybe 10,000? Bit of a good vibe growing with the Reds currently I feel.

By far the most enjoyable game of Super Rugby AU so far. Lots of skill and passion. A long way to go to match with our brothers across the ditch however improving week to week. I am loving how well drilled the Force are. Certainly for the majority of the match they seem to have more confidence in their systems than the Reds. Kudos to them.

Reds lineout tonight was much improved. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) is an incredible talent and I hope he continues to grow. I enjoyed what ASY (Angus Scott-Young) brought to the pack as well with a well balanced backrow. Very hard working pack. A little frustrated with some silly penalties but I can cop that as you can see it comes from a good place (passion/drive).

Our backs looked much better this week. After 15 mins I was saying "just get it CFS or Daugunu" they are very talented and make meters at will. Particularly post contact which is something we do not see in Oz much from our outside backs. 13 needs to play smarter and I like what JOC (James O'Connor) and Stewart bring at 10/12. Take the contact when they need to and do not lose ground. In general with the Oz teams we still have terrible kick chases. It grinds my gears. Smart chips and general play kicks from both sides kept the defense honest. Smart footy. The Force lost a bit when Prior went off. He has had one of, if not, the best pass in oz rugby for a while now. Long, fast and accurate. Very underrated.

I unfortunately have to say (from my first watch but will reassess) that the refereeing of the breakdown was terrible. I thought the whole idea of this new law system was to cut back on cynical ruck infringements. There were countless from the Force when Reds were on attack, I found myself screaming at the TV. Not rolling away, not releasing the player, rolling into the half, playing the ball off feet, "accidently" playing it on the ground etc. It was incredibly frustrating and stifled the Reds attack. If the refereeing was like the first round there would have been 20 more penalties. There just needs to be consistency. I hope Wright grows as a captain and engages with the ref on these matters more. In saying this teams must play the whistle and the Force were allowed to get away with it so good on them. Reds rightfully pinged a few times for poor entry into trucks.

Reds pack worked hard although I am not a fan of our runners getting the ball soo deep for 1 off hit ups. I was also very pleasantly surprised at the reserve lock's game when he came on. Force pack well up to the challenge, particularly impressed with a couple of front as well as back rowers.

All in all a very enthralling game. Reds building, force showing they are not the easy beats many thought they would be. Lance had a great 1st half. Young winger is great. Force backrow held their own against the much praised Reds back row. I think Kahui will bring a heap to that team particularly when Godwin starts as well. A few wins coming their way shortly I think.

Certainly been impressed with how well coached and drilled the Force have been. Not far of the pace. To me the force starting centres of Jooste and Brache must be closed to shifting to bench with Godwin and other player of PI origins whose name I can't recall how to spell...latter was strong in attack when came on....
