The game wasn’t the greatest to watch but jeez some people are melodramatic. It’s wasn’t unbearable. Reds vs Rebs 2 weeks ago was shocking, this at least was a level above that match.

That's your opinion. Thankfully I didn't see the Rebels/Reds game because if it was worse than that it was diabolical!

Last week the Tahs lost on the buzzer but I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed it as a game of rugby (both games last week were very enjoyable to watch). So this week I went to the ground looking for a repeat and it was appalling.
  • Gardiner blew his whistle at everything he could find and then went looking for stuff that wasn't there. In a game where the Rebels turned it into a war of attrition, his refereeing style just meant that almost no rugby was played for 80 minutes. When people wonder why no one watches rugby anymore - just watch this match.
  • The Tahs are a very young team so I guess I have to expect some inconsistency, but dear oh dear do I have to expect this much?
  • The Rebels play Jakeball without much kicking. Its never pretty. They just try to have a lot of collisions and then win a majority of them. Still, SA won the last WC with a similar style so maybe we should applaud.
  • I would estimate that the ball was actually in play for no more than 10 minutes in the first half, and not much more in the second. I do not want to watch teams having mini conferences at stoppages. It should be immediately penalised (long arm). Kickers should get 30 seconds to take a penalty from the time the whistle is blown. They'd immediately eliminate the 90 seconds it takes to get the tee to the kicker by having to kick without a tee. More rugby, less timewasting.
More games like this will have Fox asking for $20M per year to televise a highlights package. They will not pay a zac to show that quality week after week. The game administrators have to pull all the chiefs together (coaches, managers, refs, captains) and tell them there will be no game left unless they all pull together to put on a better spectacle.

The tahs played much better last week and they went backwards tonight with too many errors and poor handling. Criticising their performance should be kept real though as they have showed they can play better. The rebels were ordinary in first half but improved.

We need to keep it real as the tahs yes are rebuilding and not going to just write off the tahs or super rugby Au just because one side in particular had a poor game when showed they can play better than this. For the rebels biggest thing for a while is showing they can play two half’s of good footy which frustrates supporters.

  • I agree Hawko. we had a good couple of games in Aus last week, so this made this weeks game probably a bit more disappointing. And yes the Reds/Rebel's game probably was worse. I think one of the problems is there is noone who is going to rip the game apart and get the rest of the team to follow, guys like Quade, Kurtley etc in the last few years, and before that Aus teams were good enough generally across paddock they probably didn't need it as much. I maybe being a bit harsh, but games like last nights look like the are played with a team full of tradesman rugby players, and we need a few to step up to next level a bit more. I hoping tonight's game is a big improvement, because the biggest winners of too many games like that are the NRL etc. And maybe RA, there weren't an awful lot of players out there that you would think would be able to say at end of Sept we deserve to be on more money!

Gardiner did ruin it a bit, but at the end of the day the Tahs were shit and the Rebels played very well I thought. Waratahs probably threw everything at the Brumbies last week and now need that bye next week. Regroup and get back into it in a fortnight.

A bit like Scotland - beat the Wallabies one week, lose to Fiji the next.

Funny, I thought a fair few Wallabies stamped their name last night and a couple hopefuls too. Hooper, Koroibete, To'omua & DHP were all good. Deegan & Philip should get their debuts (a real smokey is Hosea, but he’s for later).

Thought Uelese was good before his injury, but looking not for his injury career now.

That's just it, I thought a few were good, without standing out, though maybe Koroibete did was a cut above. I like To'omua (hell he was a junior at our club;)) but I am not convinced he more than a tradesman 10, he capable, but not really a lot more, same with DHP. maybe I just setting bar a little high, just don't really cause me to get excited when they in play. I had already mentioned Hooper in earlier post as someone I was impressed with, he never ever seems to give up!

The Tahs attack has really gone backwards.

Kick kick kick kick. No more running rugby. I thought I was watching a European game. Whitaker was trying this last year and it didn't work. Aimless, pointless kicking. He really has been a rubbish attack coach.

For the most experienced side for the Tahs in a while that was embarrassing. No heart this week. Maybe the apparent big contract talk in the media for joseph Sua'ali'i while players are taking pay cuts has pissed the boys off.

Forwards got outmuscled, story of the Tahs for ages. No go forward.

If this is the style of Union Penney wants then he really needs to re think it because fanes are going to continue to walk away or fear to be bored to death.

Stupid penalties

I remember when Rodda burst onto the scene in that Dunedin Bledisloe test. He was 21. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) the same year a few weeks after his 21st birthday. Wonder if Hosea would be the same.

Hawko i couldn't agree more. Now i don't support either team but my god, Angus and the officiating team really made that an unattractive game to watch.
Maybe it is high time to get the refs, coaches, players etc and give them a rattle up. Time to stop thinking of it just being a game but an entertainment product that is slowly fucking dieing.
Everyone at the professional level needs to start producing some entertainment to attract more investment!
More investment more dollars into the game, more dollars should hope fully then see the wages increase.
These aimless fucking penalties that generally have no direct impact on the game, the natural urge and generally first reaction of certain players to kick the ball away is just not entertaining.

I thought To'omua was much better at 12 with Deegan at 10 personally. Makes me scratch my head as to who should be Wallaby 10 still at this point as probably JOC (James O'Connor) or To'omua but neither are inspiring choices as both feel their better position is in the centres.

I'm not against kicking. In fact I think we don't use it as a tool enough, particularly in this day and age of rush defence systems, being able to keep oppositions honest and guessing has a lot of merit as does playing for territory. The crux of the issues is that we aren’t particularly effective at it. I cringed at some of those box kicks that Gordon put up in zones that really didn't make sense to me, coupled with the fact that the Tahs had often come off long periods of no possession so to turn it over with some 50/50 (if that) box kick or kick down field that just allowed the Rebels to come back at them again really highlighted a lack of on field rugby IQ.

Maybe. As an observer you never know whats going on in the heads of players. Their internal narratives are going to drive their external performances as much as their skills and fitness. The happy family vibe is I think in part why franchises/clubs like the Crusaders and Brumbies are so successful vs. other franchises/clubs with equally good talent on paper. I got a distinct vibe of some friction between Hooper & Gardner. Hooper wasn't happy last game and he seemed well off this game.

Forwards got outmuscled, story of the Tahs for ages. No go forward.

Yes, the Rebels won it up front and got most of their pay in the low channels.

If this is the style of Union Penney wants then he really needs to re think it because fanes are going to continue to walk away or fear to be bored to death.

I don't mind different styles of Rugby if they are performed well. At the height of their success Ireland played a very formulaic form of Rugby that some may have found boring, but seeing them perform it like a well oiled machine that I found hugely entertaining. Partially because it became a question of how were the opposition going to break them down. Last night the Rebels were the clearly dominate side which shouldn't be a surprise with the experience they have across the park, but they just lack so much finesse in capitalising on their dominance. A lot of their tries just felt like the result of tired Tah bodies more so than an inherit skill in execution or thoughtful implementation of a particular plan. I think the opening gambit was probably the best I saw where they had a clear vision of how they were going to manipulate the Tahs defence and really should have capitalised but they got sloppy at the last moment. That trend flowed into the whole game, just sloppy segments that fractured the whole flow of the game and their (Rebels) attack.

Stupid penalties

Yes, some were daft (Hoopers being very uncharacteristic). Some to be fair where the result of a team under pressure. The Tahs have been pushing the offside line in all their games. The Rebels tried to play with pace and really pushed them a number of times.

Agree. Deegan is a little error prone atm as he looks to not had enough game time combined I suspect with trying too hard, but the balance just looks better to me. It might also mean the that the ball more effectively gets to those outside channels. I never feel like their play effectively brings Korobeti into the game. Too often he's hunting for the ball.

Can't agree with that enough RN, both good players playing out of position to me!

At this stage I'd be tempted with a Lolesio 10, To'omua 12 with JOC (James O'Connor) and/or Harrison on the bench depending. Harrisons accuracy in kicking will be something that makes him well worth consideration. I'd love to see his play behind a strong forward pack. Both JOC (James O'Connor) and To'omua look better running and To'omua is a decent tackler so I'd like him in that 12 channel. Who you put at 13 I'm not sure. Kuridrani has been reliable/serviceable without being a standout of late, Paisami has moments where I love what he brings but there are elements of his game which are not up to scratch.

... anyway I'm starting to divert from what is a Waratahs/Rebels game thread.
