Waratahs 2020

So players cant be called up to SRAU from club this season??

I find that hard to believe

All pro sport teams are operating in forms of bubbles. If you wanted to grab someone from the general pop, they would probably have to be tested and kept apart for 2 weeks just to make sure, before they would be allowed to mix with the squad.

that makes sense.

But to release players, you would have to be very certain you were not going to need them again.

Front rowers, Bell & Cotton both have Super Rugby caps - you would think you would need plenty of depth in these positions

Alot of the guys released are the youngsters, just 19, 20 yrs of age. Ranked 3rd in their position, so unlikely to get bench time so better off getting Shute Shield experience, playing far more regularly.

I'm sure there is a system with a period of delay to get them back in if multiple people fall over with injuryh, back it keeps them away from the day to day training.

Cotton is the 3rd or 4th Hooker
Tizzano is the 3rd openside
Robertson is the 4th Halfback
Reilly is ranked about 100th
Angus Bell (realised it's the winger) is about 103rd.

This is a good plan. It's certainly much better for Joe Cotton to get consistent club rugby games over the next month or so than maybe get one more opportunity for a few minutes off the bench in the Tahs remaining four games.

Even if the Tahs end up having to make a less desired selection in a game it's worth making that sacrifice.

Hard to say, but you've got to think it's a step up in what Phil Bailey likely offered.

I think Jason probably contributes more than just defense to the group!

I was very lucky and he was my first coach in year 8 when he was a seriously young bloke.

It's got to be nice for him too, to be in and around many of the players he helped mould into the formidable Junior Wallabies team. Even just from a mentor perspective, knowing some of the the players well, their ticks and traits under pressure etc.. I feel sometimes it is all the relationship/interpersonal elements which are as important as the technical.

Spotted in the Western Star online newspaper yesterday (not sure he qualifies as a great, but it's a huge coup for Roma):

NEW South Wales Waratah great, Mack Mason will be swapping his sky blue jersey for a Roma Echidnas jersey as the joins the local boys in the fight against the Toowoomba Bears tomorrow, Saturday, August 14.
Downs Rugby League manager Matt Hammond said the signing of Mason will be a phenomenal boost to the team, and the ticket to victory – easing the Echidnas current losing streak as they’ve been defeated at every match this year.
“This is fantastic for the Roma Echidnas, they’ve been struggling with the spine of the backline – number nine, the scrum half and number 10, and the fly half positions,” Mr Hammond said.
“Both of these positions were lost to players who signed in Brisbane.
“As the team cohesion with Mack Mason in the side over the coming weeks, it will bring a much-welcomed boost and exciting time for Downs Rugby League and for the Roma community.”
Mason spent his early years growing up in Mitchell and it was thought this season was his chance to make the Waratah’s number 10 jersey his own, after he debuted with the club in 2017.
However, due to current biosecurity protocols, players outside of New South Wales are not eligible to return to the NSW Waratahs.
Mason is still contracted with the team until November but was granted permission by the club to explore employment opportunities on the farm in Queensland while continuing strength and conditioning programs from afar.

Interesting how it was presented as unable to return. I'd be curious if it was indeed fact that there was no avenue for his return should the Waratahs have wanted him back. Either way, respect to Mason for putting the boots on and hopefully help lift what sounds to be a struggling club, it will be great for some of the other players to learn off him.

And despite what story says - it's rugby, not league.
