Super Rugby AU Round 9 - Brumbies, v. Force, Friday 28 August 7:05pm AEST (5:05pm AWST)

KOB1987

If the Force had a proper squad i think they would have pushed the Brumbies tonight. Brumbies discipline and setpiece subpar.
Just involves Twiggy spending a day’s interest to purchase the worlds best players. Subject to rules and salary cap of course.

Last decision (by the TMO) looked like absolute crap to me. FF (Folau Fainga'a) was fully and legally bound to the maul when he received the ball. Just what they thought Miller did is beyond me.

Cooper was less than mediocre when he had the central ref spot and he didn't cover himself in any glory as TMO tonight.

I need to go back and watch it on the replay but I think they were saying the initial transfer from/to Miller was the issue. He wasn't correctly bound to the jumper, not Folau. I found it a little hard to work out too.

Am I weird for being far more interested in how Amy Perrett did as a referee than how the game panned out?

I though she did well. Fantastic that we've gotten to this point. I found it interesting to note the players interactions with her. Also found her bobbing ponytail caught my eye a lot more so felt like I noticed her more.

Uh huh

Alfred Walker (16)
Interesting. Has a wing spot almost assured, Canberra local, coach raves about him, would be a step backwards; love to know what the supposed issue is?

I wish he were a Canberra local, but he's a Queenslander. He did do some hard yards in Canberra clubs and the academy though, so I'd love to consider him a local product.

Mediocre performance from the Brums, not bad from the Force. They lack teeth.
FF (Folau Fainga'a) a pretender.

Good, thanks KOB. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that a long arm transfer involves the catcher passing the ball to a player not bound to the maul. If that player then elects to run the ball, or pass it on, then there is no obstruction, but if he joins the maul after taking the ball it is a penalty for obstruction. Is that your understanding?

I have to say I have no idea of where Miller was when he took the ball but I'm sure I'll see any number of replays on various threads over the next couple of days. Did you, or anyone else, specifically note that he wasn't bound at the time?

I would be surprised, but I'm not disputing it in the absence of supporting evidence, that the Brumbies being the best drilled maul exponents in the competition would have made such an error. I do note, however, that nearly all referees have turned a blind eye to players getting in front of the catcher as the maul forms which is a fairly blatant example of obstruction in the maul.

Nevertheless, the Brumbies won and top the competition and now host the final. I have to say I am satisfied with the way they have gone about their work.

Fully expect them to be towelled up by any of the Reds, Tahs or Rebels when they meet in the final.

EDIT : Ponder for a minute what might have happened had Sio, Valetini, White Fainga'a et al started the game and not been rested on the bench. Get real.

Hey what's the rule with the ball going out for a kick? i recall against Wales in the WC a critical kick from To'omua was tapped back in by Williams (i think). To do so he had to be standing in the field of play and jumped to tap it back in. The ball clearly crossed the 'plane' of the line or whatever. Banks on the other hand started out and just had to stop it from crossing the 'plane' while being in the air.

I don't get it.

Laws change from time to time D. I think the ball in touch law changed last year, or maybe 2018. It was meant to get rid of the interpretation of line of touch as I recall, so I'm not so sure the commentators got their commentary right on this occasion. Anyone watching the NZ SRAo competition would be well aware from watching the antics of BB that it is legitimate to stand out of the field of play and keep the ball in play by jumping and knocking it back. I just don't know if there is any reference to plane of touch anymore.
