Dunno. I suppose it depends on the player , the position he plays, and how good he is. If we were evaluating Jonah Lomu, for example, I don't that we would look at anything except his incredible try scoring ability!

I imagine that a metric like the one I quoted would be much more important for loose forwards than for wingers, for example.

Also depends on the game plan. Sarries/England are reliant on high line speed and defensive dominance - particularly the collisions. They didn't rely too heavily on individual brilliance. They needed everyone up and tackling hard again and again.

DHP is the clear 15 (if he is fit), he consistently gets you on the front foot on kick returns at test level.

Maddocks doesn't he is a hole runner and Banks uses his pace on the outside

Now against a real test kick chase, 90% of the time the result you can hope for is to beat the first man and get front foot ball = DHP

Anyone can put on size - the real question is whether he can do it whilst maintaining his speed and agility. He's listed as 85kg so he's probably only about 5kgs off.

His issue at Wallabies level is that he's likely going to need to be the clear first choice over the alternatives because they've all got significantly more Wallabies experience than he has.

At Reds level it's pretty likely that some young guns coming up through the ranks (Dion Samuela) will start putting significant pressure on his starting spot.

Campbell is in pretty much the same boat as Dempsey and Naisarani, currently in better form than his peers but overlooked because he doesn’t fit what Rennie (and I assume the other selectors) are looking for, in his case presumably size. Although, unlike the other two, he also doesn’t have experience.

I think on current form Campbell is not far off any of DHP, Maddocks or Banks.

DHP is 31 and has again injured his knee -- rehabbing at 31 isn't the same as it was at 21, even then it's not like he's a 50 cap vet, he's only got 30 odd caps, and not in particularly good form. Banks is probably the most consistent of the lot, he brings some unique skills to the table for example his excellent kicking for touch (although sometimes puts too much pressure on himself and bites off more than he can chew). At his best he's probably not as Maddocks, but at his worst he's vastly superior to Maddocks. Maddocks obviously has had a few excellent games but also a few shockers too. Instinctively I feel like Rennie will prefer both DHP and Banks to Maddocks just due to the consistency. On the topic of experience nether Banks nor Maddocks have extensive experience at Test level, but they have a few seasons of Super under there belt, not sure how much that counts for once you are in the test squad; but I'd expect much of the squad to get a run for various games against the likes of Argentina, so anyone in the selection zone could really stake a claim.

If Banks can perform against the Reds then he could sure up his claim to the starting jersey but equally a poor showing could have him going backwards against the other two. Obviously if DHP is out for an extended period Campbell is the likely option to come into the squad, and I think if in the squad is even money to get a crack at the 15 jersey.

Why is he even money get a crack at the 15 jersey if he's brought into the squad? He'd still be behind Banks and Maddocks and probably Hodge as well.

If DHP is injured they may well bring up Kurindrani as centre cover with Hodge covering the back 3.

I'd say at club level yes. At Super Rugby level sometimes. But that player will lose more games than they win for the team because they will up against more players who are always at 100%. At test level - not a chance. Do you see any All Black not giving 100% for the entire match? It's why they usually have players in the right place and not 1 meter off where they could have stopped or scored a try.

Behind on reputation, not on 2020 form IMO.
All 3 have had their moments of brilliance and rubbish performances in 2020, none of those 3 players have performed to a consistently high standard all year.

I’d agree that we are lacking a star performing fullback in Australia. There are a few young talents coming through that system that look promising but are currently playing flyhalf or centre. I’m looking forward to seeing Mac Grealy over the next 2 years. DHP is our leader with Maddocks showing good skill but inconsistent.

I don't think Rennie is focused on size - he used to select Aaron Cruden and Damian McKenzie for the Chiefs, neither of whom are big men.
