You also get free delivery from Amazon on a bunch of stuff if you’re signed up to Prime. Suspect the streaming service is just a loss leader for them, they’re hoping you’ll do more online shopping

Yeah it’s this kind of multi-platform design which makes me think Amazon Prime will easily become the 2nd biggest SVOD in Australia, and their international size also means they have the finances to fund their own production and buy exclusive content like Netflix has. This is where Stan will struggle to compete in the longer term.

Shopping on Amazon (in Aus) is completely pointless. They don't offer anything that makes them competitive unlike in the US where they basically wipe your ass for you.

It’s a slow burn, I imagine it will take them a few years to develop the necessary distribution network to offer a more competitive ecommerce presence

It's worth noting that Amazon already show plenty of live sport in the US, even if it is mostly repackaged content from other broadcasters. I'd guess that we would have to pay an additional fee to subscribe to a rugby channel.

I have work mates who use it for groceries, if they spend over a certain amount the delivery is free.

I have never used it but apparently if you don't mind buying in bulk then things like Pepsi max can be cheaper to buy on Amazon that at a supermarket.

This is a good thing, I will be able to join amazon prime to save on grocery bills and keep the wife happy and get rugby for free as a bonus!

RA looking to do a deal with 9 and with 9 using Stan.

In part it says.

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sp...ke-rights-deal-with-nine-20201008-p56386.html
Industry sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential, said Nine is willing to pay about $30 million a year in cash and free advertising, an offer smaller than what Foxtel has made but one that includes a free-to-air proposition for the sport.

Under the deal, Nine would broadcast Super Rugby, Wallabies matches and the National Rugby Championship across its free-to-air network and subscription streaming service Stan. A deal could also result in a tournament such as the State of Union (a format similar to State of Origin, which runs on Nine) being aired on the network.

If Nine progresses with its bid it would dramatically change the positioning of online streaming service Stan, which currently runs a mix of international and local drama and film. Stan, which has about 2 million subscribers, turned its focus to local content in August in a bid to reduce its dependence on Hollywood studios and fight back against global streaming services that have entered Australia.

Be great to do a deal with 9 and Stan for FTA broadcasting ie holy grail of wider access - 9 needs to at least March Foxtel as got to haVe the cash to pay the player which is critical part of having good product - unless PE investment forthcoming.

All depends on how much content on FTA though

Rugby on Stan would be pretty good, and give me a reason to hang onto my subscription longer...........

Stan isn't what it used to be, and is only worth renewing once a year for Better Call Saul and an annual Twin Peaks binge...........

Personally, Stan's initial strength was its selection of international and cult films, and they would regularly upload almost entire catalogues of great directors - Seijun Suzuki, Fassbinder, Herzog, Melville, Kurosawa............

And unfortunately much of their local content, is poor - I couldn't get through the first episode of The Gloaming......... just awful.

Stay blinkered to the rugby. One of that matters when Stan is cheaper than Kayo and you get FTA cover. Then you can binge again Peaks as a bonus.

But they do have Killing Eve. :)

All three seasons?

Having said that, I feel the show has run its course and the only redeeming feature of the third season was Magma being featured in the soundtrack of one episode...........

I really can't believe they've renewed it for a fourth.

Very promising circumstances by the looks of it. Would be great to see the game get more free to air coverage and you'd expect a shift to Nine/Stan would see them put plenty of effort into selling the game, otherwise it wouldn't be worth their time buying it.

On the flipside it looks like for all fox's negative talk the competitive interest has pushed their offer right up, so at least theirs more money on the table if rugby stays where it is.

You'd snap their hand off at 25-30 mil but with FTA. Surely.

The extra 10 mil a year to paywall it would not be worthwhile. With a bit of marketing and a fresh approach to punditry they could Make Rugby Great Again.

A couple of wins against the Darkness would do our negotiating a world of good.

This is not particularly the thread for comparing streaming TV services but I reckon Amazon has a lot of great content and is fantastic value at $7 a month.

I reckon I watch more on it than Netflix.
