COVID-19 Stuff Here

CDC reports that USA has seen 300,000 excess deaths as of now. Implying the 215,000 COVID deaths is probably an underestimate. Also debunking the theory that other causes of death are down because COVID is up.

Covid making a slight comeback here in NZ on two from nets, both maritime-related. First an engineer boarded a vessel that's now parked up off the Sunshine Coast & contracted a strain of the virus not previously seen here. He's subsequently infected a small number of people but Health are confident they have it contained & there's no suggestion of Auckland good Ng back to L2 or higher.

The other cluster is IMO a real cluster fuck: some fishing companies were given an exemption to bring in ~450 seamen & of the first ~230 to arrive roughly 10% have tested positive during their quarantine. Allegedly they all tested negative within days of their departure from (drum roll, please) Russia & Ukraine. FFS. Meanwhile most of the national strawberry crop is rotting (& most of the national stone fruit crop will soon be rotting) as the people who would otherwise be coming down from Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa etc to pick them aren't allowed into NZ, supposedly for fear of taking Covid home with them.

That's confusing.
They aren't allowed into a Covid free country for fear of taking it home with them? Or have I read it wrong.

The poor old downtrodden orchard owners will just have to quit their bitching and, instead, cut back on the avocado on toast, pull themselves up by their bootlaces, roll up their sleeves, and get stuck into some good honest work.

Big bloody pat on the back and a frothy cold beer or ten for all my fellow Mexicans on GAGR's various boards.

That was an absolute shitter of an 85 day stretch and I would only wish it upon a few very specific worst enemies.

For the rest of you - wash your hands, wear a mask and do you utmost to avoid security guards fucking infected guests at hotels.

That must be a relief for all Victorians. I was talking to a Melbourne based client in the last hour or so and you could hear the weight being lifted off his shoulders, poor bugger.

Bloody proud of most victorians for doing the tough stuff and getting through it. Of course I heard complaints but I really can't blame them for it. While we lazed about at the beach they were stuck doing laps of the block.

That sounds like a Brexit dividend in the U.K.

Whatever mistakes the Andrews government made, they've addressed them to a fairly large degree and IMHO enhanced their reputation. Would not be surprised to see them smack six shades of shit out of the Libs at the next election - with fwits like Dim Tim leading the LNP charge and the IPA failchildren in chorus, they just don't understand how deep they're digging themselves.

There are a lot of people overseas who are jealous of the outcomes. Like a bunch of kids who ate their chocolate all in one go and are now starving - a piss-poor analogy for "opening up" versus keeping a lockdown in place.

Strongly agree with "Would not be surprised to see them smack six shades of shit out of the Libs at the next election - with fwits like Dim Tim leading the LNP charge"
LNP are hopeless, leaderless, and a drover's dog could beat them. Even an Andrews-led government.

Strongly disagree with "they've addressed them (mistakes) to a fairly large degree" Despite 819 deaths in Victoria and multiple business closures, the Vic contact tracing system is still using Charles Babbage's mechanical computing machine and the human beings doing the job have failed too.

It’s amazing how conservative MPs the world over prioritize the economy over people dying. Not realizing after enough people die and get infected, and have to quarantine, will kill the economy anyway!!

It is a valid point of order in what has been a fairly significant success - going from several hundred to zero.

It's a beautiful day in Melbourne today for the public holiday...........

It's perfect weather for heading down the beach, or grabbing an outside table at the pub, and yet the Covidiots are outside of Parliament protesting.

Fucking mouthbreathers.

The UK's new lockdown will be a bit different, leaving schools and universities open. Schools don't seem to have been a source of spread here, or in most places, but leaving unis open is a big risk.

The trouble with the UK is that they've been telling students 'uni's still on' while the tiered system has been in place. So they've travelled back to their colleges, halls, and sharehouses, and are now more or less stuck there. They probably won't make it home for Christmas.

The UK has given us a 'how-not-to' in all of this.
