Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

What’s going on with Stan/9? I don’t watch much FTA TV so don’t know if they have been advertising it but Stan sports is still to launch. I get there is no content but they haven’t given a launch date or a price

Rebel man, this is what is currently on Stan website. Says they have rights to Wimbledon, Roland Garros and Rugby. Gives you an option to register your interest. It is a bit concerning given it is only approx. 5 weeks before the season starts. No promotion on Stan app yet that I can see (maybe at start of February).

I’m not worried just yet, they’ll have a whole marketing team working through the best time and way to launch the app. There’s no point launching it too early if they don’t have any livd content to put on it.

Also the foundations of the App already exist, they have the streaming software, this will just be an additional extra within the App which wouldn’t be as difficult as starting from scratch. I imagine..

Seen that, I just want to know the price really and some more dialogue from Stan. Will there be a 4K option or is it just HD that sort of stuff

Stan Sport also looking to secure the NBL broadcast rights and potentially the A-League when it comes available next.

Which is in line with this analysis of sports broadcast rights, definitely angling for the sports below the line where a subscriber base of 500-800k will break even depending on the number of sports.

I seen a big ad when I log into Stan via my fetch box for rugby and can watch a bunch of the interviews..

When I signed up for Stan (and dumped Kayo), there was a survey asking if I wanted to sign up to Stan Sport, and register interest. It mentioned that Stan Sport would be an extra $15 on top of the $14 I am paying for the standard sub

“Netflix remains the clear market leader in Australia and grew its viewership by 2.26 million (+19.0%) from a year ago to 14.17 million viewers. Over two-thirds of all Australians aged 14+ (67.2%) now watch Netflix in an average four weeks.

Adam84, some really interesting information in your posts, thanks very much. The dominance of Netflix is remarkable, now almost twice as many viewers as Foxtel, how quickly that has changed.

For rugby, going with Stan is really not much of a step-down in terms of reach compared to Foxtel at this stage - Stan might well match Foxtel for viewer numbers in a year or two.

Did they mention whether that would automatically upgrade to UHD?

Stan $10 = SD
Stan $14 = HD
Stan $19 = UHD

Thanks, most of it is sourced from other peoples work though.

Indeed the Stan audience is less then Foxtel’s, however this is where the value FTA coverage on Ch9 really needs to work, the audience for Ch9 is significantly larger then Foxtel’s.

It really is a groundbreaking broadcast deal, and could fail miserably. However I think it could also set the standard for future broadcast deals across all codes.

If they acquire both the NFL and NCAA College football alongside Super Rugby I'll happily pay an extra $15 a month over top of my current subscription.

Adam84 if they promote it well it could be brilliant for both them and rugby. Saturday game live on Channel Nine, if they pump up the game and the upcoming fixtures and to never miss a game sign up to sports package on Stan etc. Also good preview / review shows on Stan could drive subscribers too.

If done right, could do wonders for both RA and Nine / Stan.

Surely Nine goes for the option of giving existing Stan subs the option of a free 3 month trial before it starts automatically billing their card. Would put a huge amount of latent subs on there

$15 a month seems excessive for 4 games of rugby a week & they odd tennis match. Foxtel have 12 channels 24/7.

as a rugby fan its all starting to add up. Stan, foxtel (premiership rugby & cricket/golf/afl) & rugby pass (pro14 & Heineken cup)

I will probably only watch Super AU and then when the TT part of the season starts I will also watch that. So I will only get two games a week that I want to watch and one will be free to air.

$15 (plus the regular subscription) a month for one game a week ( I can watch the other on free to air) adds up when I also have Foxtel and Netflix.

I don't know if it will be as popular as I first expected.

There have been issues with subscriber sports networks, I wonder if Rugby will have an issue with pricing?

Telstra has bowed to pressure from outraged netball fans by reducing the current subscription pricing of its netball TV subscription.
Netball fans were left fuming after the telco removed the annual subscription price from its app in December, effectively making the yearly price more than five times more expensive.
Before the changes, netball fans could pay a yearly fee of $29.99 to watch both Super Netball and international netball games via the Netball Live app provided by Telstra.

But Telstra removed the annual option in December with only monthly and weekly options remaining, making the cost of a year's subscription $155.88 – more expensive than Amazon Prime or Netflix's base price.

As a result of the outrage, Telstra has announced a reduction in the costing this week. The telco has added a quarterly option, reducing the annual package to just $30 a month.
The App now costs $1.99 a week, $3.99 monthly or $7.49 for three months.

mhmm I think I will probably keep Kayo for F1 unless I can find an alternative.

my subs:
- Kayo $25/m
- Rugbypass $70/year (I never use this, all Heineken matches on Kayo I think?)
- Canal+ $23/m (Top14 & Canal+ & Disney+)
- I guess VPN should be included here too $10/m
- Soon to be Stan too (which is $20? $30?)

Looking at those written out like that I don't want to be paying nearly $100/m for entertainment. I think Kayo's gonna get the flick.

EDIT: I think I can watch F1 & SuperRugby on Canal+... Recommend to everyone. Almost replaces Kayo & Stan.

Nein's audience on its main channel, no doubt is bigger. Will the rugby be on the main channel?
