Round 6: Reds v Brumbies

I'd agree with this. As someone who didn't give a flying fuck who won last night, I thought both were good, albeit with some differences in their strengths. Not the same type of player, but both offering plenty of upside.
Just quietly, I reckon if Wilson had Valetini-hair, he'd stand out more! ;)
Good to see some options there anyway.
Just watched the reply after being there live. He played well and was good in contact. Saying otherwise is just lazy.

or take shots on penalties and Reds would have won
The kickers radar was off, so may have contributed to those decisions, though on form for the preceding games, probably not.
It was just an observation that the Reds didn't come away with nothing from the game, when the observation should be that there is nothing between the two sides and the competition points could easily have been the opposite.

A lot being said in the media about Tate’s hip drop tackle.

Interesting the different alignments with different codes. NRL do nothing about careless head on head contact but have been binning players for hip drops since last year. Whereas in rugby it hasn’t really been discussed.

Also, on replay my earlier comment about no HMP is more valid. Really don’t mean to hammer the guy, but definitely a big drop with Creighton. Game management down, some errors like that long kick, but also missing that relatively easy conversion from Nassers late try. Turns out to be a crucial two points missed.

Have there been any comms about that whole flyhalf situation? Seems really weird to leave HMP out and then also sub out Lynagh at a crucial period for the bloke who is third string and have him play bulk minutes.

And don’t give me any rotational bullshit - Lynagh was rotated out of the starting side the other week.

Lynagh came off looking like he had some wear on the tyres. He doesn’t shy away from a run and he’s not a big unit. Been a target for the defences all year and he’s got up every time but he surely isn’t 100%

I suspect the issue with Creighton playing this weekend might of been Les Kiss rewarding him with the chance to have a hit out against his brother.

As an aside, i would love to see the stats on how often the team that dominates the metres made ends up losing the match.

It must be a negative correlation with actually winning games

I'm finding it hard to believe we're hearing about ineffective ball carriers by the Reds when it's 708 vs 413 metres made by the Reds.....
It’s a good point but the Reds did have some coast to coast moments which bump it up instantly. They just didn’t cross the line.

Petaia certainly firming as an elite Winger IMO. Keep it simple and you have such a weapon on the end of the backline.

Plus I’m wondering if Les would be seeing what the options would be like if HMP is off at the under 20’s

I thought Super Rugby took precedence over u20s? Particularly after last night I think HMP’s stock rose significantly and the Reds will need him if they want to get wins back on the board.

It’s a tricky one isn’t it. Success breeds success, and I’d love to have the best possible u20s team possible to give the tournament a real shake and instil confidence in a whole group of young players. This means having HMP there. But the Reds definitely missed him last night. How far away is JOC (James O'Connor)?

How the Dominos fall…I think it will. Hopefully they give Creighton another go as it’s harsh with Club footy not back to go straight in. Otherwise the 20s will miss out.

Genuinely interested- how do you reach that conclusion?

Not saying Valetini was bad on any measure. Just don’t see why it isn’t possible both players had very good games in a game where one team lost by 1.
Both teams had good games TSR, but imo Wilson has now had two of his most ineffectual games in succession. Against the Brumbies, he missed too many tackles according to some stats quoted here, and failed to make a decisive impact on the Brumbies line at all. The way he plays, or is being told to play, he simply goes to ground straight away in contact. Sure, he recycles the ball quickly and that assists Tate in his sniping/running game when the defence is lax around the breakdown. But that wasn't the case yesterday.

And some here are talking up Harry's lineout steal. Sort of fades into the dust when compared with Cale's 8 steals in 4 games. I have admired Harry Wilson since his U20s days when he played No 6 (Will Harris was No 8). I wish we could see him back to those levels when he was demolishing defences with his ball running. Harry hasn't met the national coaches' requirements as a Wallaby for a couple of years and he really hasn't shown improvement in that time either. It's not just supporters of other SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) teams who see the deficiencies in his attacking play.

As opposed to his bright red headgear?

And these situations are where I feel like we fall a bit short in terms of alignment and where super rugby stands.

Are super rugby teams feeders for the wallabies and the age based rep teams? The Reds fans want to see the best team on the park and pay money for that. It’s part of the reason I have issue with player “rotations” in what is a short competition.
