1. Blake Cullen - Ipswich Grammar – very capable - strong
2. Tim Reid - The Kings School - Solid, tight kind of hooker. Full of running and big work rate. NSW are spoilt for hookers, good to see him getting a go.
3. Patelo Tatuilo - Hills SHS
4. Sam Reiser - St. Josephs Gregory Terrace – solid, hard
5. William Skelton - Hills SHS - Has been written about in the papers. Apparently a giant of a bloke who is full of running and loves his rugby.
6. Jay Adkins - St. Josephs Nudgee – unlucky IMO not to make Qld
7. Josh Frater – Anglican Church Grammas School – good in the lineout, very mobile
8. Jordan Reid – Knox Grammar - NSW Schools 09 - but a second rower. Interesting to see him selected here.
9. Tim Duchese – Knox Grammar Knox 2nd XV - not sure how that works but good on him!!
10. Jake Milne - St. Josephs Nudgee –not schoolboy great but has been marked for future greatness
11. Garrett Nowlan – Brisbane State High Schools – fast, good finisher
12. Michael Freeman – The Kings School - This guy is a terrific winger who should of made a higher GPS team. No doubt he'll be an excellent centre - very physical. Pacey.
13. Hymel Hunt - St. Josephs Nudgee – lookout – very solid, takes a bit hit, another who is unlucy not to be in the Qld squad
14. Ray Buchannan – Hunter SHS - Don't know him...
15. John O’Connor – The Southport School – one of the most elusive backs around, will create havoc if not tackled
16. Daniel O’leary – Downlands College – good player,
17. Jake Schatz – St. Edmunds College
18. Laiatea Fotofili – Pittwater HS
19. Helaman Samuela – Ispwich Grammar – dependable player
20. Jack Waters – The Scots College - Tough little player who will tackle all day. Bit surprised to see him here, however.
21. Matt Fairnington – The Southport School – possibly Aus schools next year, great pass and very in your face, should have made the Qld squad in the mind of many
22. Will Fay – Cranbrook Very solid flyhalf with the full bag of skills. Good round-the-field kicking game. Was unlucky to miss out on NSW, I'd had him penciled in.
23. Alex Northam – Killarney HS

I will be attempting to write objective reports from the Nat schools champs.
If anyone has any players on whom they want particular observation please let me know.
A bit late with this, but:

NSW I
2. Hugh Roach, Newington College
3. Guy Millar, The King's School
8. Jason Havea, Hills SHS
13. Malietoa Hingano, St Augustine's College

NSW Schools II
12. Apolosi Latinupulu, Newington College
13. Chris Ingate, The King's School
14. Cameron Clark, Knox Grammar School

I'll list why I am interested in these players. I'm more interested in your opinion of the potential of these lads for U/20 and maybe pro rugby.

- 2. Roach was the Oz hooker last year and looks aggressive and skilful

- 3. Millar is terrific schools THP at scrummaging, contesting and in general play - and a bit like Benn Robinson when he was at school at LHP - but he may not grow big enough to be a senior THP.

- 8. Havea, who has arms like Pocock, reportedly has a 4year contract with the Melbourne Storm, and counter-reportedly wants out of it. Anyway have a look to see if you think that he is anything but just a good ball runner.

- 13. Ingate is a Cameron Shepherd type playing outside centre and I rate him.

- 14. Cameron Clarke is Foxports Clarkie's son and is really a fullback because he is a fine broken field runner. I believe he has another year at school; so perhaps some other posters could confirm that - or not.

- 12. Latinupulu and 13. Hingano are much the same type of player in different positions. They can lack a bit of vision and do too much on their own account, but sometimes they can do breathtaking things.

Yes - he is year 11, so another year to go. And I think definiely more a fullback than winger (he can tackle tostart with...) Though he is quite quick and does add spark from the back. He seems top be possessed with good vision.

I'm hearing that the bench in both NSW 1 and 2 will be starting tomorrow in their respective games against Victoria and WA.

makes sense in that all players must start at least once in the tournament and that gets it done and out of the way for the tougher games later in the week

My Tips:

NSW I 47 - 10 Victoria : NSW too strong.
NSW II 52 - 12 Western Australia : NSW to dominate.
Queensland II 22 - 26 Combined States : First upset of the tournament.
Queensland I 45 - 7 ACT : QLD to shred.

Also, if not too late too...let me know how Brandon Jones the ACT no.6 went please...

His mum is an old friend of mine living in Canberra of course, but unable to travel to see her son, so any input I can pass onto her would be much appreciated...

Here is my market on the C'ships. Get your money on quick at these odds:

1/1 QLD 1
2/1 NSW 2
5/1 QLD 2, NSW 1
25/1 ACT
50/1 CS
100/1 Vic, WA

QLD 1 are the powerhouse of schoolboy rugby in Australia at present. With Curtis Browning (BSHS) leading the way up front and with big, fast backs such as Lindsay Crook (TSS), Chris F’Sautia (BSHS), Walter Petaia (BSHS) and Giorgio Phillips (NC), they are entitled to outright favouritism.

By all accounts NSW 2 have a stronger team than the 1's due to some controversial selections. They will gain the benefit of having four players from the strong Kings School in the forwards. These players were the nucleus of the best forward pack at the NSW C'ships; GPS. The backline don't have duds either. 12. Apolosi Latinupulu, Newington College, 11. Jason Seage, Hills SHS, 13. Chris Ingate, The King's School, 14. Cameron Clark, Knox Grammar School and 15. James Vaka, Narara Valley HS are all clever on their feet and quick. There is plenty of flair here.

NSW 1 are a good team but are weighed down with the hopes and aspirations of the coach and selector of the team John Papahatzis. He has gone for combinations (particularly from his school team St Augustines) at the expense of individually better players who are in the 2's. Five players from his school team have been selected as well as another two from his ISA team. Whether having someone not at arms-length in the selection process to be a good thing will be determined by the end of the week. Much pressure is on this team to deliver. They do have some fine players such as their front row of Mokofisi, Roach and Miller but it will not be enough to upset the QLD applecart.

NSW I 55 def a brave Vic 13
NSW unimpressive as a team. 15 Keary good as was 8 Havea who made some good runs and worked hard throughout.
Forwards looked unfit and backs disjointed. No 10 took too long to pass and was indecisive at times.
Scorers:
NSW I: Tries to Hingana(2), Roach, Dombkins, Keary, Brisby, Miller, Holloway and Broome.
Conversions: Purcell, Keary (2) and Muller
Vic: Try to Marsters, 2 PG and a conversion to Stowers
No13 for Vic played well making some very good tackles,

That's a good first up win for the boys. You can't ask for much more in their first hit-out. Good to hear Havea went well. His test will come later in the week against CS and QLD 2. He can run amok against weaker opposition but he needs to show some technique and rugby nous against the stronger teams.

I know the ARU are making a play for him. He and his parents were locked in talks last week with ARU officials.

Quick question did the reserves run on or was it the starting string and was your reference to the # 10 on Brisby.?

NSW II 71 def WA Nil
Dundar at 10 for NSW great, why not 1st 10. this team definitely better than the NSW I
Scorers:
NSW II: Tries to Luani, Siege, Wells, Melrose, Dunbar, Gillespie, Wylie, Ahofono, Killingworth and Vaka,
7 conversions to Dunbar and a PG to Dunbar
I thought #3 for WA had a good game in the scrum and at the breakdown.
best on the field was Dunbar who was a late replacement for McCallum and controlled his backlione well. Very good kicking game.

why........

I guess you will have to ask Manu Sutherland and Hugh Carpenter why. But from my perspective I believe he has much to offer in terms of raw ability. He is a great runner of the football, can tackle but needs to brush up on his rugby nous. I think they can see the potential.
