Game On! August 21st.

Will Julia be voted by the people as Oz' first female Pm or will the Budgie Smuggler prevail? Share your informed and uninformed election thoughts here.

To get the ball rolling on the radi today they were commenting on how lame the Labour party's opening election ad "Moving Forward" was as apparently it was used by iron maggie in the '87 election in the UK.

i think we'd be better if both options where shot, just like if the springboks where to ever play england in the rwc final the best option would be for the stadium to blow up....

gillard is a backstabbing bogan figurehead for the same policies, labour trying to decieve and make it appear as if something has changed

abbott is a backstabbing ponse with no policies from what i have seen and snarly, comes across is immoral and sheltered and just sleazy, the only thing going for him is that he's a rugby player and won't snub rugby like the rudd government did

both rudd and turnbull would be better choices than these two

on another note, in my electorate you have a choice between Maxine McWho? and some prissy pro tennis player, both of whom won't do anything for the community and both of whom have never lived in the area up until election time.

Didnt Maxine McWho vote out Howard last time?

yeh, but she comes from mosman, and hasnt done anything since getting in, local media titles her that because of this reason. John alexander comes from lindfield, which whilst not far away is still outside of the area and is the north shore, and i sure dont classify myself as a north shorian.

both are outsiders who are put here by the parties because we're a majorly publicised swing area.

Am watching Bennelong a bit RF, not from there myself but should be interesting to see how McKew fares without the "minor celebrity taking on Howard" vote. I am not a great fan of Alexander- he has tried for preselection in more than one seat for the Libs in recent times, just desperate to get into parliament I think. The seat is still notionally Labor though so I would expect Maxine to get through.

I have to say I am pretty disheartened by the campaign so far. I can't believe we are STILL talking about refugees in 2010. And the thing about the refugee debate is it is so bitter, so uninformed and so partisan- raving lefties who want to let them all in, hard right wingers who want to turn the boats back. All throw around meaningless numbers and no-one wins. And why are they rambling about this 'big Australia'? I don't fucking care about our population in 2050. Sure it is something we should think about but a key election issue? Please.

I liked the last election because we had big issues, big decisions. Global warming, industrial relations, education. Where are they now? Both sides have competing healthcare plans, but you wouldnt know it at the moment. Same with CPRS. I can see this being one of the most dirty, uninspiring elections for a long time. Certainly worse than Howard/Latham.

I'm baying for labor blood. But mostly cause I'm desperate for a state election to turf out the most incredibly corrupt oxygen thieving good for nothing ratbags. I wonder how much of that sentiment will transfer to the federal level ?

I fear too many moronic fucktards, ie: typical Australians, will cost the Libs the election by voting for the Greens, donating their preferences to Labor.

I don't know that Abbott has any key differentiator that really sets him apart from Gillard. Other than the alleged lack of appeal to women voter's. Aussies are soft wankers these days, they want to be sucked up to and love freebies and bullshit promises. I don't see them going for Abbott's tough love.

Problem is, their replacements fit the same description as they do.

They can't do any worse. A message needs to be sent.

But yeah, just like the Wallabies, the talent level and potential replacements..are lacking.

And it pretty much sums up the electorate when the leadership debate has to be moved so it doesn't clash with Master-Short-Order Cook or Dancing With the B-list Celebrities for fear no-one would watch.
Fark me , I need some QWADEs.
And don't get me started on Bob Brown...the man with the mung-bean mandate.

I don't fit the profile: raised on a farm, rugby player, university educated and small business owner, but I'll be voting for the greens. Their values are more closely aligned with mine than either of the major parties. At least the greens seem to stand by their values. It's hard to know what the big boys actually believe in given their choices are invariably based upon what is politically expedient at any given time.

Cutter, I am happy for the Greens to be there, but I really don't like the disproportionate amount of influence they have, and once you move from their "green"policies, they are a bit lacking IMO. Same goes for that Family First peanut, who seems to get a say on everything despite the fact about 10,000 people in the country really care about what he says.
They overstate their "mandate", all the minority parties. To a point I agree with Paul Keating about unrepresentative swill in the senate. Get elected in the House of Reps.
But you are dead right about the 2 major parties, who are generally a bunch of mediocrity.

i just cant stand for the greens because of you read their policies beyond the environmental stuff its all absolutely ludicrous, legalisation of euthanasia etc. and as everyones pointed out their vote goes to labour anyways.

bring back the democrats

Well, the maths of democracy are not encouraging in any country. If you want to have local representation, which a Federation must do, you have to put with some mathematical anomalies.

In general, Australians like the ruling party to have the Senate in mixed hands to control power. Nothing much wrong with that. Plus - you can't draw across the board implication for voting Green. It's different in each electorate, and depends on local preferences. It works the same way with right wing parties such as One Nation, Shooters, and No Immigrations parties.

My feeling is that we will get a Labor government and Greens balance of power in the senate, and that will be as good a representation of voter sentiment as anything.

but don't you mean I am ticking the greens box, knowing it goes to labor party?

Only if you vote exactly as the Greens how-to-vote card tells you to. If you are unhappy with that just vote the way you want to, I dont understand why people use those cards anyway.

Been there done that.

Why bring the democrats back? Do we have another GST to get through the parliament?

It will be very dangerous having a priminster who is currently trying to cover her far left tendencies to have the power and then be backed in the senate by an even further left party. I know you might like this socialism Scarfie, but the reality is that it would damage our country, and having a party that don't really live in reality (Greens) having the senate balance can in no way be a good thing.
